POPSAn Interesting Take On Healthcare What do I have to fear from a public health plan? That they might charge me less or, heavens, that I might pay the same amount, and actually get coverage? Some might say the Corporate Government is more American, because I have the freedom to not buy it. Freedom to go bankrupt if my child gets sick in this bloated, parasitic health care system. Freedom, once I’m bankrupt, to go to the emergency room and foist the costs off on everyone else. Freedom, if I ever get out of bankruptcy again, to pay whatever skyrocketing price my insurance company might happen to be charging five years down the road. That’s the Corporate Government’s idea of freedom. In this modern age, where power abhors a vacuum, you’re always going to have one Government or the other. As your doctor might say, choose your poison.

POPSMedicare Waste Goes Unchecked: Thanks to Pete Stark (D-Calif) and Dave Camp (R-Mich)
From wheelchairs and walkers to orthopedic shoes and needles, Medicare buys tens of thousands of products every day for elderly Americans. "There were products that we had as much as 75 percent savings. The average was 29 percent," said Mike Leavitt, the former HHS secretary who oversaw the program. "It would have saved billions if we could've actually implemented it, but Congress deferred it. In Washington speak, that means we put it off forever," he said. Leavitt blames Congressmen Pete Stark (D-Calif.) and Dave Camp (R-Mich.) for introducing legislation that terminated the contracts and postponed the program for 18 months. Leavitt says the congressional intervention helps explain why many are suspicious of claims that Washington can cut enough waste to actually pay for health care reform, as President Obama told a joint session of Congress last month . "Reducing the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and Medicaid will pay for most of this plan,"

POPSMilking the Consumer Hettinga, who ran a big business and was no political innocent, fought back with his own lobbyists and alliances with lawmakers. But he found he was no match for the dairy lobby. "I had an awakening," the 64-year-old Dutch-born dairyman said. "It's not totally free enterprise in the United States." Most U.S. dairy farmers work within a government system set up in the 1930s to give thousands of small dairies a guaranteed market for their milk and to even out prices for consumers. Farmers who participate in regional pools operated by the federal government or the states deliver raw milk to cooperatives or food processors. They get a guaranteed price, whether the milk ends up in a gallon jug, cheese, butter or ice cream. In Arizona and other federally regulated regions, the Agriculture Department uses a formula to set the price processors pay for raw milk, issuing "milk marketing orders."

POPSPrice of Typical Detroit House - $7,100 Seriously? This is a headline from the Wall Street Journal. You have to subscribe to actually read the article. I drove through Detroit a decade ago and the place looked bombed out back then.

POPSTito's vs. Grey Goose The clear winner here is Tito's Handmade Vodka. I implore anyone who is biased towards spirits and their perceived quality because of high price or brand recognition alone to please do yourself a favor and try Tito's. It ranks up there with any of the highest priced vodkas on the market and sells for a fraction of their price. On top of that, it is a genuine Texas-made beverage. Good stuff.

POPSProfitable Until Deemed Illegal Surfing Internet you can stumble on this site, if didn't yet by some luck; their ads popping up everywhere, they do not saving on advertisement. How many times con artists will teach us to be vigilant and taste waters before getting in? They feel themselves free in virtual space with scores at their disposal. But good folks will always defeat evil, we can use opportunity to quickly share our experience and warn each other. Or even get organized for impending lawsuit. Don't fall victims of fraudsters, don't let evil reign. They skillfully take advantage of weaknesses of human nature, even worst, incite and inflame them for the profit at any price. Isn't it similar to what was done to all us recently?

POPSGM Partnership With E-bay In The Works
Tom Pyden, vice president for communications at G.M., explained that the companies had been in long-term discussions and that a partnership was in the works. He emphasized that G.M. dealers, not the company itself, would list new cars on eBay. “We will not be selling directly to customers,” he said. “We are looking for ways to make it easier for customers to shop and buy our products on their time, on their terms.” G.M. said the test with eBay would let customers either buy new cars at auction or at a fixed price using eBay’s “Buy It Now” option. But it is unclear whether that fixed price would differ from the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, and how G.M. would react if auction prices were well below that price. One G.M. dealer said he had already talked with the company about the program and was excited about it. The dealer, Inder Dosanjh, who owns Dublin Chevrolet outside San Francisco, said listing new cars on eBay would allow his dealership to get

POPSU.S. Considers Curbs on Speculative Trading of Oil
I am a little weary of this step in the regulation of futures markets. Though I do not have the complete information before me and I do realize the vital interest there is in price stability I question the role of government to overly regulate the energy futures market as futures markets do serve a function that is beneficial to more than the few. Though what that benefit is escapes me at the moment. In fact the price swings of late I’d say have little to do with futures markets and more to do with expected price fluctuations of a dwindling resource, i.e. this is an indicator that we have reached peak oil. There was a study (hey if you are interested in the details, let me know) that came out a few years back that showed the price curve of a commodity that suddenly reached the point of being a dwindling resource, meaning that new demand was coming on at a higher rate than supply. Contrary to expectations the price did not skyrocket forever but went through wild gyrations

POPSTheory and actuation I find it as a nice example of the need always to look for ways to test one theory of... Only then will clarity arise above the unmediated unchallenged and largely unsupported knowledge one has about the world and herself.
