A long,melancholy roar
Aribeth
by Aribeth  10-17-2009    4
Of our ancient enemies, microbes are now the most fearsome.HIV/AIDS chalked up 2 million deaths across the planet in 2007 alone; tuberculosis was close behind, with more than 1,700,000.The year before, malaria escorted almost a million people to their graves. We should be far more scared of mosquitoes than we are of bears; but we’re not. More recently, however, it’s been the case that the mammal most likely to kill a human is: a human. Murder and war have long been more important causes of death for us than predatory wild animals. But here’s the thing. Today, in many parts of the world, the human being most likely to cause your violent death is: you. Yes. You are the person most likely to kill yourself violently and on purpose. Suicide rates have risen dramatically over the past 50 years.

Great Whites Hang Out in 'Shark Cafe'
merrie
by merrie  11-5-2009    3
It had long been assumed shark species at the top of the ocean food chain that roam the high seas looking for food and mates did so almost randomly. But using satellite tagging, acoustic monitoring of shark "hot spots" and genetic samples, a research team led by Professor Barbara Block of Stanford University found to their surprise that the eastern Pacific's great whites are real homebodies. Over an eight year period, nearly 100 sharks were electronically tagged, and even more had tissue samples taken by scientists working from a ship. Sticking to a schedule They found that the sharks consistently migrate along the same paths and stick to a schedule. Between August and December, the great whites, which can grow up to six metres and weigh three tonnes, stalk waters off the coast of central and northern California, feasting on seals and sea lions. Their preferred hunting grounds in this area are known as the "red triangle", notes the study.

‘Leopard Behind You!’
Aribeth
by Aribeth  10-17-2009    2
A human in a blue shirt is announced differently from a human in a yellow shirt. In and of itself, it’s not surprising that the sounds animals make are not just noise, or a reflection of the state an animal’s in (scared, happy and so on). But the subtlety of the calls — the full amount of meaning they contain — is only now being appreciated. Animals of one species often respond to the alarms of another. In a small way, it’s like those childrens’ stories that have rats talking to toads, or elephants arguing with ostriches. Predators sometimes respond too. After all, alarm calls don’t just let other animals know there’s danger in the area. They can also let a predator know that it’s been seen. Ambush predators, like leopards, often give up and go away once an alarm has been sounded. <<

Great White Sharks Have Their Own Cafe

"Over an eight year period, nearly 100 sharks were electronically tagged, and even more had tissue samples taken by scientists working from a ship. Not only do the sharks consistently migrate along the same paths, they stick to a schedule too. Between August and December, the Great Whites -- which can grow up to six metres (20 feet) and three tonnes -- stalk waters off the coast of central and northern California, feasting on seals and sea lions. Their preferred hunting grounds in this area are known as the "red triangle", notes the study, published in the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Starting in January, they head for the deep blue around Hawaii some 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) to the west, where they are found in largest numbers between April and July. But some -- especially males -- loiter at a halfway point known as the "White Shark Cafe", with females coming and going for what scientists presume is a bit of shark intimacy. The new findi

Military Service Training Ground For Sexual Predation
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  10-22-2009    3
This article is quite comprehensive in scope and deserves a full reading. A few more paragraphs from it follow this remark. "Yet for decades, in spite of the terrible numbers, the military has managed with astonishing success to get away with responding to grievances like Krause's with silence, or denial, or by blaming "a few bad apples." But when individual soldiers take the blame, the system gets off the hook. And it can be shown that the patterns of military sex crimes are old and widespread -- for generations, military service has transformed large numbers of American boys into sexual predators. So it seems reasonable to ask if perhaps there is something about military culture or training or experience that can be identified as causative, and then, perhaps, changed."

An Egregious Tragedy Has Taken Place

... into its clutches. It didn't happen to my child but it did, to someone who lived in my community. His name was Adam Walsh and he was a year younger than my own. The Walsh's horrible story, could have been mine. I, many times frequented the same place as Adam and his mom and I forever shuddered to think it my child who was cut from the herd and open to attack. We as a society should warn our children and ourselves that we are but one or two seconds from something so heinous that our lives would never recover. Whenever our children leave the safety of our sight, we should tell them, "Never allow a stranger to talk lies, in order to hurt you. Scream, cry, run and fight if need be, not to be taken by anyone.” Every child, every young person who falls victim to the savages amongst us, must be a reminder that we live in a jungle of predators but worse, these fiends look like us, so we have to be even more vigilant than jungle prey.

long-term care and insurance premiums. Men and Women in Uniform We must support the men and women who protect our nation. That means giving them the tools and equipment they need, as well as the benefits and moral support they have earned. I support tax benefits to help ease the financial burdens our citizen-warriors and their families face and updated, improved GI Bill education benefits. And we must also support our first responders, who put their lives on the line to protect us in our homes, businesses, and communities. I was proud to have the MN Police and Peace Officers Association endorse my TRACK Sex Offenders Act, which gives law enforcement and officers the tools they need to keep us safe from sexual predators.

Not only vegetarians.Vegans!
aklimento
by aklimento  9-17-2009    4
That's why I like blogs: the article itself is wrong because it declare wrong idea, but in comments you can find a lot of useful thoughts. We need this revolution! In our conscious first of all. We have to become not only vegetarians but full scale vegans! STOP BLOODSHED! Stop eat animals and birds! They are creatures designed to live in harmony with surrounding world and not violently die in order to become food for bloodthirsty predators. We are not predators! (Most of us, to be precise.) And our society is not a jungle. Logically with this pattern of thinking we will inevitably come to the questions of war and peace. Isn't it the milestone of our global troubles? We let bloodthirsty predators rule in the world and impose on us their suicidal lifestyle and violent ways of thinking. Aren't we suffering from this? Isn't it a real cause of countless unnecessary deaths? Isn't it the needle of addiction used as tool to enslave us?

Another oddity he noted was the story of young Israeli citizens, in this country illegally, who had set up a tripod camera on the roof of the warehouse where they worked and trained their camera on the Twin Towers shortly before the attacks. Witnesses told police the boys celebrated the attacks by joyfully jumping and slapping hands. Police held the men overnight and they were returned to Israel the next day. All this was reported in the mainstream media, but the story was immediately dropped. How did these Israelis know where to be and when to film the Trade Center disaster? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzl3juBt2Z8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtorXLa2JrE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS89vNH-eeY
