FT.com: Europeans see US as Threat to PEACE.!!!
righthand
by righthand  7-8-2007    15
The level of European concern about the US has remained broadly consistent over the past year. In 11 previous polls dating back to July 2006 the proportion of respondents considering the US a threat to stability has ranged between 28 per cent and 38 per cent. The latest poll comes in the wake of the “surge” that has increased US forces in Iraq to about 160,000 troops, but which has not been accompanied by political breakthroughs or a dramatic reduction of violence.

Wrong Woman; Wrong Message
debbyski
by debbyski  9-4-2008    19
Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37 years' experience. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, "I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

I'm as much to blame as anyone, but i really am disappointed that the American people site by so idly while the Bush administration screws people so badly. It's great that we "disapprove" of them in polls, but when push comes to shove, we are allowing them to do whatever they want...and the results are truly sickening.

Chomsky: If US was a true Democracy!
righthand
by righthand  8-21-2007    66
On all these topics, White House policy is completely at odds with what public opinion wants. But the media rarely publish the polls that highlight this persistent public opposition. Not only are citizens excluded from political power, they are also kept in a state of ignorance as to the true state of public opinion. There is growing international concern about the massive US double deficit affecting trade and the budget. But both are closely linked to a third deficit, the democratic deficit that is constantly growing, not only in the US but all over the western world. The US press sometimes publishes even my work, and the US is not a totalitarian country. But anyone who fails to fulfil certain minimum requirements does not stand a chance of becoming an established commentator. One of the big differences between the propaganda system of a totalitarian state and democratic societies go about things. Exaggerating slightly, in totalitarian countries the state decides the official li

PIMPIN OUR DAUGHTERS
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  2-24-2007    5
In the words of Hillary Clinton ' It takes a village' why does it take scientific studies and polls to make us aware of what is going on in our own families and culture? I mean does it really require society to tell us what is wrong with our families? DADS must someone else tell you what is appropriate behavior for your sons and daughters? As long as there is pop culture and idols are made of television stars our young people will be tempted to look like what they see on TV and in the movies. Perhaps a return to decency and a little old fashion modesty is in order?

Huckabee: cover up for son's cruel deed reflects dad's ethics
gingembre
by gingembre  12-15-2007    10
Mike Huckabee allegedly covered up for his son David's cruelty to a dog. Do we want a person with Huckabee's lack of ethics in the White House? A bit more from the article (but please read even more at the source): "David Huckabee did not respond to requests for comment. (In April of this year, he was arrested—and paid a fine—when he forgot to remove a loaded gun from his carry-on luggage at Little Rock airport.) His father told NEWSWEEK THAT his son did not engage in "intentional torture." "There was a dog that apparently had mange and was absolutely, I guess, emaciated."A campaign official says David "regrets" the incident and notes that he later made Eagle Scout. Congrats on attaining Eagle Scout rank, David.

Bush: War Criminal's Crimes; Mass Murderer; WarMonger,
righthand
by righthand  9-1-2007    11
Bush wants to murder more. We have to kill Iranians "over there," Bush says, "before they come over here." There is no possibility that Iranians or any Muslims who have no air force, no navy, no modern military technology are going to "come over here," and no indication that they plan to do so. The Muslims are disunited and have been for centuries. That is what makes them vulnerable to colonial rule. If Muslims were united, the US would already have lost its army in Iraq. Indeed, it would not have been able to put an army in Iraq. Lacking US troops with which to invade Iran, the Bush administration has decided to bomb Iran "back into the stone age." Punishing air and missile attacks have been designed not merely to destroy Iran’s nuclear energy projects, but also to destroy the public infrastructure, the economy, and the ability of the government to function. ... http://www.lewrockwell.com/roberts/roberts222.html

Social media: Social Approximity?
wildcat
by wildcat  9-29-2008
Now that bit about the telegraph may be a bit out of dot dot dash date, so simply substitute in "social media" for telegraph and you're back in the present tense. Social media are a recontextualization of old print forms and contents within a new distribution and communication framework (social web). It's not surprising that so many of our social practices (tools and uses) echo, if not amplify, their old media (broadcast) forebears: celebrity, self-promotion, news, anchoring, commentary, top tens, ratings, rankings, and polls (diggs, votes).

Standing Up to Conservative Bullying
gingembre
by gingembre  6-25-2007    3
Here's a bit more to explain the brinkmanship and absolutism: "Brinkmanship is being used to force the federal government to write a blank cheque for the pipeline, and indemnify Exxon against ecological disasters and further cost increases..." "Absolutism (Bush-style "you're either with us or you're with the terrorists" framing) is being used to bully Canada into committing to keep our troops in the midst of the anarchy and civil war in Afghanistan. The PR from the military is increasingly using the term 'enemy' to describe anyone in Afghanistan who opposes the continued presence of foreign troops in their country. The ideologically rabid Harper Conservative minority government routinely uses the "if you don't support our war, you don't support our troops" line to disparage anti-war groups. And today a military spokesman lambasted the Canadian media for daring to publicize opinion polls showing Canadians' strong opposition to the war, saying it was "demoralizing our troops".

How Obama Did It
Socratoad

"How did he do it? How did Obama become the first Democratic insurgent in a generation or more to knock off the party's Establishment front runner? Facing an operation as formidable as Clinton's, Obama says in an interview, "was liberating ... What I'd felt was that we could try some things in a different way and build an organization that reflected my personality and what I thought the country was looking for. We didn't have to unlearn a bunch of bad habits."

Why polls understate Obama's lead
masbury
by masbury  9-2-2008
Polls do not represent electoral votes. Electoral votes come from states, usually all-or-nothing. A 51%-49% win in most states means 100% of its electoral votes. Thus, the same election that appears close in polling, can be a landslide if the candidate focuses on winning the states he or she can actually win. I'm not saying that the American way of doing it is the best way. I'm simply saying that, at this point in history, the candidate who masters an electoral vote strategy wins. And it appears to be happening.

New Nanotechnology Products Hitting The Market At The Rate Of 3-4 Per Week
Mohir
by Mohir  4-26-2008    1
While polls show most Americans know little or nothing about nanotechnology, in 2006 nanotechnology was incorporated into more than $50 billion in manufactured goods. By 2014, Lux Research estimates $2.6 trillion in manufactured goods will incorporate nanotechnology--or about 15 percent of total global output. Despite a 2006 worldwide investment of $12.4 billion in nanotech R&D, comparatively little was spent on examining nanotechnology's potential environmental, health and safety risks.

Lose Your House, Lose Your Vote
sahara
by sahara  9-10-2008
The Michigan Republicans’ planned use of foreclosure lists is apparently an attempt to challenge ineligible voters as not being “true residents.” One expert questioned the legality of the tactic. “You can’t challenge people without a factual basis for doing so,” said J. Gerald Herbert, a former voting rights litigator for the U.S. Justice Department who now runs the Campaign Legal Center, a Washington D.C.-based public interest law firm. “I don’t think a foreclosure notice is sufficient basis for a challenge, because people often remain in their homes after foreclosure begins and sometimes are able to negotiate and refinance.” As for the practice of challenging the right to vote of foreclosed property owners, Herbert called it, “mean-spirited.”
