Doctor Who regenerates fan base
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  2-14-2008    6
is perhaps far geekier I've been called many things in my life but never a geek. I guess I'm in good company. I really love this show. The first Doctor Who episode was postponed because it had been scheduled to air on the day JFK was murdered. They were in black and white. I started watching when they came to the US. My son was watching it on a Sat. AM and I got so interested, I was hooked. It was the 4th doctor and although I can't recall the name of the episode, it was about a Sontarian. (probably spelled wrong). Maybe "The Sontarian Experiment"? He was testing humans for weaknesses.

My Candle Burns At Both Ends
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  1-2-2010    4
The poem in this video is: "I shall forget you presently, my dear, So make the most of this, your little day, Your little month, your little half a year, Ere I forget, or die, or move away, And we are done forever; by and by I shall forget you, as I said, but now, If you entreat me with your loveliest lie I will protest you with my favorite vow. I would indeed that love were longer-lived, And vows were not so brittle as they are, But so it is, and nature has contrived To struggle on without a break thus far,-- Whether or not we find what we are seeking Is idle, biologically speaking."

By imagining many possible worlds fiction can chang our Minds
einbar
by einbar  9-3-2009    2
"For more than two thousand years people have insisted that reading fiction is good for bookyou. Aristotle claimed that poetry—he meant the epics of Homer and the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, which we would now call fiction—is a more serious business than history. History, he argued, tells us only what has happened, whereas fiction tells us what can happen, which can stretch our moral imaginations and give us insights into ourselves and other people. This is a strong argument for schools to continue to focus on the literary arts, not just history, science, and social studies. But is the idea of fiction being good for you merely wishful thinking?'

Your Brain On Words
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  9-27-2009    2
There is no one brain part which when taken away would suddenly rob you of your ability to read. We rely on the same old brain — the same brain that we inherited from our Homo Sapiens ancestors 200,000 years ago when they appeared in Africa. This means that the same brain that hunted wildlife and walked thru Ice Ages is the same brain that can now read a book a day.

Saving The World from Copenhagen Crackup
merrie
by merrie  12-16-2009    2
opening chapter concludes with a poem he wrote - 21 lines of verse that are equal parts beautiful, evocative and disturbing." Sample: One thin September soon A floating continent disappears In midnight sun. Vapors rise as Fever settles on an acid sea. The moral here is that roses are red, violets are blue/If Al can write poetry, so can you. Meanwhile, back on Capitol Hill, Sen. Reid, the leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, finds Little Eva - or at least his Republican colleagues - floating off on melting ice floes on a feverish acid sea. (Don't blame me for all these clashing, clunky metaphors; once you get caught up in Al's poesy and Senate oratory, it's easy to lose control.) The senator got wound up in his Harriet Beecher Stowe mode in an oration about bedpans and health care, which seems to be on life-support in a Senate where Mr. Reid and his Democrats are down to a mere 20-seat majority and can't get much done.

poem: "The Power of the Dog" by Rudyard Kipling
Lexica
by Lexica  11-16-2009
More: We've sorrow enough in the natural way, When it comes to burying Christian clay. Our loves are not given, but only lent, At compound interest of cent per cent. Though it is not always the case, I believe, That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve: For, when debts are payable, right or wrong, A short-time loan is as bad as a long-- So why in Heaven (before we are there) Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Wish You Were Beer
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-18-2009    12
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, it is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver. I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. Remember: "I" before "E," except in Budweiser. I drink only to make my friends seem interesting. Everybody should believe in something; I believe I'll have another drink. Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXdNnw99-Ic

Pregnant teenager who fell into eight-year coma after her first dose of heroin loses fight for life
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-21-2009
Thelma, 55, distraught after her daughter's one-off experiment, launched a personal campaign to warn other families about the dangers of class-A drugs. She appeared in the national Press and on TV. She invited the cameras to her daughter's bedside and even posed with her daughter to highlight the cause. Amy had once been a popular teenager who enjoyed running and writing poetry. She also loved the sea. Thelma, from Sedlescombe, East Sussex, said at the time: 'It is horrendous. She was my daughter, my best friend, everything. How could anyone do this to her? 'She was such a lovely, bubbly girl with so much to live for.'
