Biochemists Manipulate Fruit Flavor Enzymes
durvishkumar
by durvishkumar   Today 1:59 AM
"Genetic engineering/modification (GM) of green leaf volatile production holds significant potential towards formulating environmentally friendly pest-control strategies. It also has important implications for manipulating food flavor," said Raman, the senior author. "For example, the aroma of virgin olive oil stems from the volatiles synthesized by olives. By modifying the activity of enzymes that generate these substances, it may be possible to alter the flavor of the resulting oils." According to Raman, "Our work shows how you can convert one enzyme to another and, more importantly, provides the needed information for modifying the GLV production in plants." The scientists made 3-D images of the enzymes, which allowed them to make a small, but specific, genetic change in AOS, leading to the generation of HPL.

Our oceans simply cannot yield sufficient quantities of fresh fish and seafood to produce enough viable protein for the Earth's population. That poses a dilemna for Fishermen, however, for a large majority of the world, without underwater agriculture, they would simply go hungry...or die.

Summit targets world water issues
spirithiker
by spirithiker  8-18-2008
The U.S. is sending millions every year to developing countries in food and medical supplies. It seems it would be more beneficial to build wastewater treatment plants to produce water for farming. Currently 85% of of cities in developing nations discharge water without any treatment and many people are using this water to grow food crops. The situation is getting worse as more and more people move to urban areas. This creates a higher demand for farmers to produce more food and with clean water becoming more scarce the problem just becomes more compounded.

More than 4.7 million tons of low-level waste remain at Fernald in a fenced-off, 110-acre pile encased in thick liners and caps made of synthetic material, clay, rock and clean soil. The 65-foot-high, grass-covered mound snaking along an edge of the preserve is about the length of two Empire State Buildings laid end to end. The rest of the radioactive waste - more than a million tons - was shipped to storage and disposal sites in Nevada, Utah and Texas. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I can express a naughty thought, that I hope the toxic waste sent to Texas goes near Bush's home, and far away from Wiccan Texan.

Two Large Solar Projects Planned for California
Wisco
by Wisco  8-17-2008    1
While I'm not extremely keen on these sort of plants -- there's no real reason to centralize solar generation like this -- it's nice to see that solar's being taken seriously. Given recent advances in photovoltaic technology, the price is coming down enough for it to be put anywhere the sun shines. In other words, there's no reason to use up huge expanses of land when you can do the same thing on rooftops. Still, any time new generating capacity comes from green tech, it's good news.

Military Trials Shrouded in Secrecy
Wisco
by Wisco  8-15-2008    1
The piece goes on: "The right to a fair and public trial is a bedrock principle of democracy," said RCFP Executive Director Lucy A. Dalglish. "Unfortunately, in this regard, members of the armed services have fewer rights than those granted to criminal defendants in civilian courts. We believe that, at a minimum, the armed services should create an easily accessible docket‚ of information listing those charged, details regarding the charges against them and the date and time of their trials and pre-trials."

Oceans running low on oxygen
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-14-2008    1
These dead zones occur when fertilizer runoff dumps excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, into coastal waters, providing food for algae. When these microscopic plants die and sink to the ocean bottom, bacteria feed on them and subsequently consume all the oxygen dissolved in the water. This leaves fish and other bottom-dwelling sea creatures without enough oxygen to survive, causing mass die-offs and displacements. Typically, the researchers noted, these events aren't noticed until they threaten valuable fish stocks.

Glittering Greenhouses and Glass Houses
pocketfulofsunshine
by pocketfulofsunshine  8-14-2008
Most of us see our homes as our own personal sanctuaries. Home is a place where you can let loose, be yourself, and walk around in your underwear whenever you please. But for people who live in glass houses, home is more like a fish tank. While some of these glass houses seem impractical for everyday living, others serve a very real purpose. Greenhouses are constructed of glass to harness the power of the sun for growing plants. Whether they are meant for people or for plants, these houses made of glass are visually stunning.
