Just Missed: Nov. 7th Asteroid 30x Closer Than Moon
blueridge
by blueridge  11-12-2009
It was the third-closest known (non-impacting) Earth approach on record for a cataloged asteroid. But before you turn to another Clipmark note: THIS WAS THE SECOND ONE THIS YEAR. The one in March 2009 was close too. Look at the stats on that one 8 months ago: Asteroid's Near Miss A Cosmic Close Call Heavenly Body Buzzes Earth; Comes Within 48,800 Miles The asteroid named 2009 DD45 was about 48,800 miles from Earth. That is just twice the height of some telecommunications satellites and about a fifth of the distance to the Moon. CNN video report on that one here. Real footage Video of 1972 asteroid in Canada here --which actually is seen trailing then "bouncing" off earth's atmosphere.

Healthy Monday: Canada Joins Meatless Monday Movement
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  11-11-2009
Could this happen here in the biggest meat consuming countries in the world? Don’t we care enough about our health to cut meat out of our diets at least one day a week? Most of our health costs stem from eating red meat. Most of our food costs stem from feeding cattle. Doesn’t it make economic as well as heatlh sense to cut down on our red meat consumption? Red meat again linked to cancer risk: http://www.foodnavigator.com/Science-Nutrition/Red-meat-again-linked-to-cancer-risk-Study How to reduce your red meat consumption: http://www.causecast.org/news_items/8699-how-to-reduce-your-red-meat-consumption The growing case against red meat: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1887266,00.html

2009 Leonid Meteor Shower
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  11-10-2009    2
More from the article below: ""We're predicting 20 to 30 meteors per hour over the Americas, and as many as 200 to 300 per hour over Asia," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "Our forecast is in good accord with independent theoretical work by other astronomers." "A remarkable feature of this year's shower is that Leonids will appear to be shooting almost directly out of the planet Mars," notes Cooke. It's just a coincidence. This year, Mars happens to be passing by the Leonid radiant at the time of the shower. The Red Planet is almost twice as bright as a first magnitude star, so it makes an eye-catching companion for the Leonids"

Greed+Palm Oil = Global Deforestation and Gasp...
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  11-10-2009
The saddest part of this is that greed is also associated with the self-delusion that they are not really harming the planet and if they are - they have enough money to save themselves. Maybe, we should just call it lunacy since buying a self-contained cabin on Luna (aka: the moon) would be the only way to buy their way out ot eh consequences of their greed and stupidity.

Ancient Hebrew Cosmology
risatalogo
by risatalogo  11-5-2009
Ancient Hebrew cosmology as illustrated by Michæl.Paukner: The preceding description of the world doesn't share the same scientific view that we have, in which the Earth is one planet around one sun in a universe full of suns and planets. The ancient picture of the universe portrays a world in which the Earth is a disc surrounded by water not only on the sides, but underneath and above as well. A firm bowl (the firmament) keeps the upper waters back but has gates to let the rain and snow through. The Sun, Moon, and stars move in fixed tracks along the underside of this bowl. From below the disc, the waters break through as wells, rivers and the ocean, but the Earth stands firm on pillars sunk into the waters like the pillings of a pier. Deep below the Earth is Sheol, the abode of the dead, which can be entered only through the grave. As portrayed in the illustration, the biblical cosmos consisted of three basic regions: the heavens, the land, and the underworld. In conclusion
