Want to Lose Weight? Try Sleeping!
Stumblerz
by Stumblerz  11-4-2009
Sounds pretty simple right? Then why do so many of us view regular sleep as something not all that important? "I’ll just make up the sleep on the weekend" we say. Well, unfortunately studies are showing it just does not work like that when it comes to sleep...

New Seven Layer Whopper! Can You Handle it?
katsteevns
by katsteevns  10-24-2009
This Windows 7 Whopper might be estimated at five times larger than a typical quarter pounder. Thus, if you do the math, this 7-layered Whopper could be using 7,000 gallons of water to produce (give or take, depending on the size of the patties). In a world running out of fresh water supplies (fossil water), that's a huge quantity to plow through in one meal.

Marijuana War Up in Smoke!
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-20-2009    2
California here we come! --- An exodus similar to the Great Depression will soon be heading west. Go West, young person, there you will find a new world. But, seriously....the hypocracy of the nation pushing booze and pills massively on TV everyday, while sending pot smokers to jail, is at a turning point. The turning point is that the U.S. will stop using federal law to arrest individual marijuana consumers. This allows each of the 50-states to set their own laws about it...sort of like the idea of our Constitution and democracy intended -- prior to evil leaders trying to use a "War on Drugs," as as excuse before the "Global War on Terrorism," came along. 14 states have already made personal consumption of marijuana a non-criminal offense (so no need to rush out to northern California...although it's thriving out there, no doubt) These states did this change even though it was moot ---- till now. Now, it's not "moot." - more states (like mine) now seeking ballot init

Ibuprofen is harmful when taken "preventively" during exercise
Lexica
by Lexica  9-2-2009
More: painkillers were not useful for reducing pain” during the long race, he says, and afterward, the runners using ibuprofen reported having legs that were just as sore as those who hadn’t used the drugs. …in laboratory experiments on animal tissues, NSAIDs actually slowed the healing of injured muscles, tendons, ligament, and bones…including the micro-tears and other trauma to muscles and tissues that can occur after any strenuous workout or race…also blunt the body’s response to exercise at a deeper level. Normally, the stresses of exercise…increases collagen, and leads, eventually, to creating denser bones and stronger tissues. If “you’re taking ibuprofen before every workout…Your bones don’t thicken and your tissues don’t strengthen as they should. They may be less able to withstand the next workout. In essence, the pills athletes take to reduce the chances that they’ll feel sore may increase the odds that they’ll wind up injured — and sore.

How Big Pharma pushed a more-expensive, no-more-effective drug
Lexica
by Lexica  9-2-2009    1
More: Lexapro had $2.3 billion in sales in 2008 even though generic versions of Celexa and every other drug in the class sell for a fraction of Lexapro’s price. For example, a month’s supply of 5-milligram tablets of Lexapro costs $87.99 at drugstore.com, compared to $14.99 for a month’s supply of a generic version of Prozac. Forest has recently been raising the price of Lexapro to make up for a decline in its use… It is impossible to unpack all of the reasons for these prescriptions, but some industry critics say one reason could be the money doctors make from Forest. Psychiatrists make more money from drug makers than any other medical specialty, according to analyses of payment data. And Forest gives more money and food to doctors than many of its far larger rivals… Forest’s payments to doctors in 2008 were surpassed only by those of Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Novartis and Merck — companies with annual sales that are five to 10 times larger than Forest’s.

When the "option" to die becomes a duty
4ensic
by 4ensic  8-10-2009
Of course the law was proposed as giving a choice to die with dignity, but appears to be on the road to becoming a case of "We will not treat you, so it's your choice to die in pain or commit suicide - which we'll foot the bill for." The spokesman for the State health plan called the letter " a public relations blunder and something the state is 'working on"'. Apologising for the manner in which the actions are communicated is NOT the same as apologizing for the action. Still, that's all the State has done.

Kennedy would have been urged to die earlier under Obama Care
kareval
by kareval  8-28-2009    6
" t was President Obama himself who suggested that seniors who don't have as long to live might want to consider just taking a pain pill instead of getting an expensive operation to cure them," said Huckabee. "Yet when Sen. Kennedy was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer at 77, did he give up on life and go home to take pain pills and die? Of course not. He freely did what most of us would do. He choose an expensive operation and painful follow up treatments. He saw his work as vitally important and so he fought for every minute he could stay on this earth doing it. He would be a very fortunate man if his heroic last few months were what future generations remember him most for."

Why Not "Universal Food Coverage, Too"?
merrie
by merrie  7-23-2009    3
who only want to insure against the possibility that they'll be hit by a truck. So politicians at both the state and federal level keep passing boatloads of insurance mandates requiring that all insurance plans cover a raft of non-emergency conditions that are expensive to treat -- but whose practitioners have high-priced lobbyists. Insurance plans that force everyone in the plan to pay for everyone else's Viagra and anti-anxiety pills are already completely unfair to people who rarely go to the doctor. It's like being forced to share gas bills with a long-haul trucker or a restaurant bill with Michael Moore. On the other hand, it's a great deal for any lonely hypochondriacs in the plan. Now the Democrats want to force us all into one gigantic national health insurance plan that will cover every real and mythical ailment that has a powerful lobby.

video: Ted Leo - "Me and Mia"
Lexica
by Lexica  8-21-2009
More lyrics: Won't anybody here just let you disappear? Not doctors, nor your mom nor dad But me and Mia, Ann and Ana Know how hard you try Don't you see it in my eyes? Sick to death of my dependence Fighting food to find trancendence Fighting to survive More dead, but more alive Cigarettes and speed to live And sleeping pills to feel forgiven All that you contrive And all that you're deprived All the bourgeois social angels Telling you you've got to change Don't have any idea They'll never see so clear But don't forget what it really means to hunger strike When you don't really need to Some are dying for the cause, but that don't make it yours And even the nights, they could get better
