Alife, i.e. artificial life ahead
balthazarus
by balthazarus  Yesterday 10:19 AM
"Just as 19th-century engineers studied the flight of birds and dreamed of being airborne, he says, so today's computer engineers marvel at the intelligence in all forms of life and contemplate the potential of more efficient computation." It may be sooner that expected, are we ready for it? does it matter? I think it does. I think we as a human society much put more effort in thinking the future ahead of us.

Barrack's Wife: Michelle Obama Plays It Cool.
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-9-2008    1
These people, this campaign, is incredible. I have never seen nor could even have imagined such consistent brillance. The more common reaction would be to toss insults back at McCain and instead she talks about respecting them and how Obama is going to need them! One of Obama's clever message (and I believe it's also sincere) is how Democrats, Republicans and Independents have to work together (appealing to them all), and how there is no 'Red States,' of America, nor 'Blue States,' of America -- but the United States of America (appealing to us all). Even direct enemies are invited in and it is another (I believe sincere) brilliant thing: It disarms the 'enemy,' and is a core of his political philosophy: Work Together: Consensus This has actually worked to soften significant Catholic opposition (due to the abortion issue; most difficult). (/About 56% Catholic opposition would lose the election). How? -- Allow abortions (regrettably) but work to build families; do adapti

An extraordinary article. The idea seems to hark back to Leibniz's monads which always seemed very strange but has followers in the philosophy world. The discoveries of science seem to be getting more counter-intuitive as time goes by

Michael Black
by Michael Black  10-3-2008
A boy has a dream that he can float, but unless he holds on, he will drift away into the sky. Even when he is grown up, this idea recurs. After a strange accident, he walks through what may be a dream, flowing in and out of scenarios and encountering various characters. People he meets discuss science, philosophy and the life of dreaming and waking, and the protagonist gradually becomes alarmed that he cannot awake from this confusing dream .

Pullman on Religion
tabsey
by tabsey  9-30-2008    1
INTRO; Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy constitutes one of the finest reading experiences for children I’ve ever seen. I read them as an adult, on the advice of a literary colleague, and fell under their spell immediately. They are fantasy books, for sure, but with a strong rational and anti-authority philosophy. And although I don’t think of them as purely anti-religious, if your religion is one with an authoritarian streak then … Interesting character.

Praising Lucifer The 1st radical who fought the establishment. What do you think of this guy. This philosophy. Might there be a take-over of a larger magnitude than we can contemplate? Might both parties be "party" to it? While most of either one is really unaware but willingly - actively allowing themselves to be led to the trough - by the scattered few really in the know.(?) Both of the last two administrations? And the upcoming one ! How about Paulson. Hasn't it really been the slow crawl away from capitalism the last 20 years that has led to this mess? (Amid cries blaming dereg. to distract us.) The taking of the people's money as they make noises about rescuing our money? And the ushering in of the next level of double-talk: CLASS WARFARE! "Rise UP" C-O-M-M-U-N-I-ty !

Saying "you should know better than to stand up for your rights" is abhorrent
Lexica
by Lexica  9-25-2008    1
From a thread on BoingBoing, discussing 9/21/07, the day on which 19-year-old MIT engineering student Star Simpson walked into Boston's Logan International Airport wearing a home-made light-up sweatshirt, and asked an airport worker for information about a friend's arriving flight. ...in a persisting environment of anxiety over terrorism, a Boston Logan Airport worker mistook Star Simpson's LED-adorned wearable tech garment for a suicide bomb. That airport worker phoned Boston police. A small misunderstanding over a hoodie quickly became a surreal debacle during which police said they came close to killing Ms. Simpson.

The Party's Over - Pat Buchanan
dl211
by dl211  9-24-2008    6
A true conservative cherishes prudence and believes in fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets and a self-reliant republic. He believes in saving for retirement and a rainy day, in deferred gratification, in not buying on credit what you cannot afford, in living within your means. Is that really what got Wall Street and us into this mess -- that we followed too religiously the gospel of Robert Taft and Russell Kirk? "Government must save us!" cries the left, as ever. Yet, who got us into this mess if not the government -- the Fed with its easy money, Bush with his profligate spending, and Congress and the SEC by liberating Wall Street and failing to step in and stop the drunken orgy? For years, we Americans have spent more than we earned. We save nothing. Credit card debt, consumer debt, auto debt, mortgage debt, corporate debt -- all are at record levels. And with pensions and savings being wiped out, much of that debt will never be repaid.

Financial Wizards & Snake Oil Salesmen
spirithiker
by spirithiker  9-19-2008    1
Republican philosophy allows Wall Street to do what they want. This past week shows the result of that allowing that kind of trust and free resign. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me over and over again, and maybe it's time we stopped listening to the financial wizards who keep insisting that they don't need any oversight." It is human nature to take what they can get away with, and when someone, anyone, in charge, says they don't need oversight, that's the time to pull in the reigns, sharply.
