Why our dogs beg at the table
gingembre
by gingembre  11-28-2008
Operant conditioning? "It is a dog’s natural inclination to avoid the leaders of the pack when the leaders are eating. Not doing so in a real pack situation is a good way to get bitten. If your dog sees you as the boss, it will treat you with this same respect. However, even dogs that normally are respectful can easily be taught to beg at the table. All you have to do is occasionally give them a sample from your plate. Presto. A beggar is born. The solution? Never feed a dog from the table. It’s a hard behavior to control once started. So don’t start. And don’t let anyone else start, either. It’s really that simple. Start the holidays with well-behaved pets. Keep it that way by not feeding them from the table."

The First Video Footage of the World's Most Elusive Cat
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  11-8-2009    1
"Andrew Hearn and Joanna Ross, researchers from the United Kingdom’s Global Canopy Programme’s Bornean Wild Cat & Clouded Leopard Project, have been surveying five species of wild cats of Borneo for several years. Their work has uncovered some remarkable findings. Besides capturing the world’s first ever video of the rare cat, the two are also credited for snapping the first photograph of a live bay cat. Based in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, camera trapping and radio-tracking methods are utilized in their research. The program also provides educational materials, community surveys and training courses as well. " (from the article)

The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle
sahara
by sahara  11-4-2009    1
The next day, Dennis said goodbye to Nubs, but he didn't forget about the dog. He began mentioning Nubs in emails he wrote to friends and family back home. "I found a dog in the desert," Dennis wrote in an email in October 2007. "I call him Nubs. We clicked right away. He flips on his back and makes me rub his stomach." "Every couple of weeks, we'd go back to the border fort and I'd see Nubs every time," says Dennis. "Each time, he followed us around a little more." And every time the men rumbled away in their Humvees, Nubs would run after them. On one trip to the border fort in December 2007, Dennis found Nubs was badly wounded in his left side where he'd been stabbed with a screwdriver. "The wound was infected and full of pus," Dennis recalls. "We pulled out our battle kits and poured antiseptic on his wound and force fed him some antibiotics wrapped in peanut butter." That night, Nubs was in so much pain that he refused food and water and slept standing up.

Oldest cat in America dies, shocking discovery made
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-27-2009    2
Health officials called to the scene with Human Control Services reported that the conditions were quite distressing. "There were far to many old women living here, and the food provided was inadequate.", said Agent Fluffy. "The water in the tub for them was stale. And their litter boxes were atrocious." The 72 old women were rounded up and taken to a "no-kill" shelter in Dallas, pending the reading of Caterack's will. It is believed that the estate is to be left to these old women, many of them now feral, all with some health problems. Regrettably, the descendants of Caterack are expected to contest that, so authorities are broadcasting a plea to any other cats out there who can accomodate two or three of these old women. "They are good old women", said Agent Fluffy. "They've been fairly well kept all in all. They need good homes, and lots of love." Cats interested can call 1-800-OLD-LADY.

Top Ten: The Scariest Ghost Movies
merrie

It is fast approaching that unique portion of the year when all true matters arcane and diabolical are given the festive treatment, as Halloween prompts folks to deploy their broomsticks for something other than sweeping up after the household pet. Although we have recently seen cinematic quotas of the supernatural gobbled up by vampire and zombie flicks, it would be remiss to overlook the genuine chills instilled by the most successful exponents of the ghost movie genre. So here are ten of the scariest ghost movies to put the frighteners on us poor, trembling cinema-goers. Read more >>> http://funster.us/2009/10/top-10-the-scariest-ghost-movies/

Life Expectancy of Cats
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-26-2009    1
Diet plays an important role in increasing the average life expectancy of cats. The pet food offered to them and their lifestyle play a major part in increasing the chances of a longer life for your cat. If you overfeed your cat, you are lowering its chances of living a healthy, long and satisfying life. The genetic make up of each individual cat also help in increasing the life expectancy of cats. Cat breeds that are genetically prone to certain diseases are known to have a lower life span. The moggie or mouser and similar mixed breeds of cats have a mix genetic make up, that makes the average life expectancy of cats longer than the pure breed cats. When cats are kept indoors they tend to live through a ripe old age of over 15 years. They are less prone to accidents, poisoning, attacks from animals like other cats, dogs, etc. These cats do not succumb to infectious feline diseases, as they are less exposed to other cats. It has been seen that they can live to over 20 years Re

Ortiz showed pictures of Dakota to wolf expert Dave Mech. His e-mail opinion was, "Looks like a dog to me; possibly it has some wolf but hard to say." "My only hope is that the animal doesn't get destroyed ultimately," said Philipp. "Because it seems like the animal, whether it's a wolf or mixed-breed or whatever it is, seems to be, by all reports, a nice animal."

Muhammad Was a Cat Person
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-19-2009    8
If you ever needed another reason to be suspicious of Islam, it’s the attitude towards pets. Now, Islam thinks loyal and trustworthy dogs should be avoided. Why, because they’re filthy. Yes, Muhammad in his great wisdom decided to spare Muslims of contact with dog saliva because it’s so dirty. And you know how when we think of Muslims in the Middle East, the first thing that comes to mind is cleanliness. On the other hand, Muhammad condemned a woman to hell for not feeding her stupid cat. (http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?pagename=IslamOnline-English-Ask_Scholar/FatwaE/FatwaE&cid=1119503544828) Muhammad is a cat person! I was raised never to trust a man who is a cat person. Frankly, I don’t believe in cats since they’re not mentioned in Bible.

Friendly Humpback Whales Near Farallon Islands
merrie
by merrie  10-18-2009
On October 11, 2009, a dramatic event occurred on an Oceanic Society whale watching boat near the Farallon Islands, 25 miles west of San Francisco. The vessel Salty Lady came upon a group of humpback whales, which is not unusual as it had been sighting whales pretty much every whale watching weekend, However, on this trip, four humpback whales approached the boat and for over an hour circled the boat, nearly brushing up against it, and seemed to make contact with the 45 passengers on board. One even lifted its head out of the water with passengers reaching out to pet it. There is no doubt that these whales sought out human contact and some form of communication was taking place. Look for yourself.

Vote Against Stimulus, Then Race For The Cash.

White men speak with forked tongue. On top of that, ""I am writing to request your support for a number of projects in my home state of Utah that I believe merit your department's attention," Bennett wrote, adding that he would "greatly appreciate" any funding considerations for his state." "Utah's lawmakers sent these letters despite repeated promises from President Barack Obama that the stimulus bill wouldn't include pet projects and that the money wouldn't be awarded based on the desires of lobbyists or home-state politicians." Tsk, tsk, tsk.
