Fixing it could improve our lives—and the planet: Batteries...
einbar
by einbar  11-24-2008    1
It's an issue that goes beyond cars and mobile devices. To reduce carbon emissions, utilities are likely to shift more generating capacity from coal and natural gas to renewable sources like wind and solar. Solar cells and wind turbines require batteries because they provide power intermittently.

68 Molecules that hold the key to all Cellular Life
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  9-4-2008    2
Currently, the vast majority of medical research looks to the human genome and proteome for answers, but those answers remain elusive, and perhaps for good reason. “We have now found instances where the pathogenesis of widespread and chronic diseases can be attributed to a change in the glycome, for example, in the absence of definable changes in the genome or proteome,” Marth said, adding that, as biomedical researchers, “we need to begin to cultivate the integration of disciplines in a holistic and rigorous way in order to perceive and most effectively manipulate the biological mechanisms of health and disease.” Marth believes that biology should become more integrative both in academic and research settings. “I’m one who believes that we don’t need to sacrifice breadth of knowledge in order to acquire depth of understanding.”

Elements brought to life online
shunyax
by shunyax  8-26-2008
from BBC News: The chemical elements are being brought to life online in a series of YouTube videos filmed at a UK university. The project by a team in Nottingham is designed to stimulate interest in chemistry and comprises videos illustrating each of the 118 elements. They feature a variety of experiments, some of which are too dangerous to be performed in classrooms. In the videos, scientists also recall personal anecdotes and amazing facts about each element in the table, from hydrogen (1) to Ununoctium (118).

Johann Hari: Science is thrilling – except in our schools
tabsey
by tabsey  7-4-2008
At Primary School level, often teachers teach little science as this is often hands on, and they keep the messy lesson for art. Also, some teachers at this level just are not science people, forcing themselves to be proficient at maths in stead. I pushed early on for teachers to move from class to class teaching from their area of expertise. Attitudes became more positive.

Periodic Tarot of Elements
boliyou
by boliyou  11-16-2007
Calyxa has developed a divination deck based on the periodic table of elements. As she explains below: "he Elemental Hexagons deck is based on the Periodic Table of the Elements. The modern periodic table as of the end of 2006 lists 117 known elements, and hypothesizes the existence of an unknown total of others. The Elemental Hexagons deck consists of 60 cards; the first 30 from the table, and 30 others of significance. Every element in the deck was discovered previous to 1900, and each can be found outside of a laboratory environment." It's an interesting concept. Might have to order a deck for myself. via Boing Boing

MetaReligion - The Structure of the Atom
skwirlinator
by skwirlinator  9-9-2007    1
The theoretical model of the structure of the atom based on protons, neutrons and electrons is useful in explaining the periodic table of elements with each element having a different number of protons neutrons and electrons. The model is not helpful in trying to understand the internal structure of the atom. The curved space theory applies the concept of space-time curvature to the structure of the atom. This is the start of an attempt to provide a unifying theory which explains phenomena on a very small (atomic) scale and on a very large (cosmological) scale. The concept of the equivalence between mass, energy and space curvature is described in the curved space theory of the structure of the universe.

Sci-ink-tific tattoos all the rage

Really crazy but, inevitable. There is a new trend of geek chic. Being a geek is no longer the sort of thing people laugh at. There is something increasingly cool about it and I think these tattoos are part of that." See more at scienceblogs.com/loom and at Flickr.

What or Who Killed Electric Cars
Marcariel

I have seen some really nice prototypes for electric cars ... but it looks like the issue of the quick dying batteries have (at least for now) killed the hopes for a green alternative to the gasoline burning cars of today.
