""Originally believed to be a typical nova eruption, it was then realized to be something completely different. The reason for the outburst is still uncertain..." This animation is a morph between a number of Hubble images, showing the light echoes expanding around the star (reflected from nebulas and other stellar material expelled earlier)"

Did NBC Risk Employee Lives in a Green Agenda Stunt?
merrie
by merrie  11-24-2008    5
. . . And if we are successful, we will reach millions of Americans with the story in an unprecedented way. " Translation -- more sham eco shock and awe. The Race to Peak at the Peak By Monday, the team had ascended to Barranco at 13,000 feet. Another eight-hour climb on Tuesday brought them to Arrow Glacier at 15,700 feet, where they laid camp. But while Curry got a view of the mountain's ice cap, Today watchers were treated to one of a haggard looking reporter complaining that the entire crew was experiencing lethargy, severe headaches and fatigue. The acute altitude sickness they'd developed was also causing peripheral edema -- their faces and fingers were quite visibly swollen. And no wonder -- in a rush to summit the mountain for Friday's green week finale, they had broken all rules of altitude acclimatization, starting with Rule #1: Once above 10,000 feet, altitude should be increased no more than 1,000 feet per day.

The Ten Oxherding Pictures - From The Manual of Zen Buddhism
einbar
by einbar  8-9-2008    2
From The Manual of Zen Buddhism, D.T. Suzuki By Shubun (15th Century) a series of short poems and accompanying woodcuts that are intended to illustrate the stages of a Mahāyāna Buddhist practitioner's progression towards enlightenment, as well as his or her subsequent perfection of wisdom. The pictures first appeared in their present form, as drawn by the Chinese Chán (Zen) master Kuòān Shīyuǎn (廓庵師遠), in the 12th century, and may represent a Zen Buddhist interpretation of the ten stages experienced by a Bodhisattva as outlined in various Mahāyāna sūtras, most particularly the Avataṃsaka Sūtra.

Geologic Evidence of the Cause of Global Warming and Cooling
amgumen
by amgumen  7-24-2008    6
The warming over the past 50 years is hardly even noticeable on the 15,000 year graph above. Compare the peaks about every 800-1000 years for the past 10,000 years (since the last full ice age), all are much warmer than what we're experiencing now. In fact the last 1,000 years has been unusually cool for this interglacial period, just looking at the graph it certainly looks like we've been over due for warming (or if our interglacial period is over another full ice age which would be much worse).
