POPSPay Attention A very underrated and neglected thing to do. I really find that most people don't pay much attention to things most of the time. For whatever reason, i tend to be someone who pays very close attention to everything. I guess if you think about it, clipmarks is kind of about paying attention to what you're reading and capturing the finer points that others may overlook (a stretch?) I've noticed that my daughter pays incredible attention to her surroundings and i think it's had an incredible impact on her ability to learn to speak.

POPSPlumbing the oceans could bring limitless clean energy Now rising fuel costs have revived interest in this neglected technology. In September, the Department of Energy awarded its first grant for ocean thermal energy in more than a decade, giving Lockheed Martin $600,000 to develop a new generation of cold water pipes.

POPSAre you a Patriot or a Loyalist? For anyone who dares to call peaceful protesters wackos or delusional, I would dare to differ and perhaps even call them cowards or traitors. The whole article is worth a read. These considerations would aptly apply to anyone, anywhere and in any country. Always.

POPSMcCain's Radical Agenda "This entire McCain health insurance transformation is right out of the right-wing Republicans’ ideological playbook: fewer regulations; let the market decide; and send unsophisticated consumers into the crucible alone. You would think that with some of the most venerable houses on Wall Street crumbling like sand castles right before our eyes, we’d be a little wary about spreading this toxic formula even further into the health care system. But we’re not even paying much attention. "

POPSUsing Your Limited Power Effectively "In fact, it isn’t up to you to save this nation. It is up to us all. And you need to convince me, your friends, your family, your co-workers, etc. every single day that if we aren’t acting or paying attention, we are letting the powers that be hold their prized power over us for one more day."

POPSCuil: Search engine to ravel Google Launches For one, Cuil has an impressive pedigree with its three founders: Tom Costello of IBM's WebFountain project, plus Anna Patterson and Russell Power of Google's TeraGoogle project, Google's massive search index. Cuil also counts former AltaVista founder Louis Monier -- who later went to eBay and then Google -- as part of the team. These people know search. In particular, they know on-the-firing line, heavy duty, industrial strength search. Not only that, they're unleashing what appears to be a comprehensive service that anyone can use. Indeed, Google already did a blog post in reaction to Cuil and its size claims on Friday, before Cuil even launched or those claims became public. If Google's paying that much attention, then anyone should.

POPSThe Next Hacking Frontier: Your Brain? As neural engineering becomes more complex and more widespread, the potential for security breaches will mushroom. For example, the next generation of implantable devices to control prosthetic limbs will likely include wireless controls that allow physicians to remotely adjust settings on the machine. If neural engineers don’t build in security features such as encryption and access control, an attacker could hijack the device and take over the robotic limb.

POPSJapan child robot mimicks infant learning
We are entering a new age of robotics. there is no doubt about that, at least in Japan. Robots integrated into everyday life is not only a technological feat but also a conceptual and social adaptation. In Japanese world view it is much easier to relate to robots as endowed with souls. This is fascinating, since it seems that we create our future technological world to reflect our beliefs and expectations. "Robots have hearts," said Kokoro planning department manager Yuko Yokota. "They don't look human unless we put souls in them. "When manufacturing a robot, there comes a moment when light flickers in its eyes. That's when we know our work is done." Public opinion in Japan may be more open to robots than in the West, where dark science fiction visions from movies such as "Bladerunner" and "Terminator" have conjured images of robo-soldiers taking over the world. Thanks to such benign cartoon characters as Astro Boy, "Japanese people have a friendly image towards robots

POPSFacing Down Bullies (And Their Enablers) "And I didn’t give even a moment’s thought to the bullies, and what their lifetime prognosis might be. Parents of these children need to be encouraged to demand that schools take action, and pediatricians probably need to be ready to talk to the principal. And we need to follow up with the children to make sure the situation gets better, and to check in on their emotional health and get them help if they need it. How about helping the bullies, who are, after all, also pediatric patients? Some experts worry that schools simply suspend or expel the offenders without paying attention to helping them and their families learn to function in a different way."

POPSRepublicans Quit-- Again Doesn't look like this is getting much attention from the mainstream media either. Unless I'm wrong, isn't it their job to attend Congress and do the people's business? Looks like they've just given up. If they aren't working, then why are we still paying them?

POPSPalin's Kind Of Patriotism "How in the world can conservative commentators write with a straight face that this woman should be vice president of the United States? Do these people understand what serious trouble our country is in right now?"

POPSRational Mysticism Just a brilliant piece from 2005. My experience with meditation would be of much the type Sam describes. It is just plain good for all of us, and religion has no monopoly on "spiritual experience" ....only some don't seem to know that yet, lol.
