Pay Attention
egoldstein
by egoldstein  10-12-2006    2
A very underrated and neglected thing to do. I really find that most people don't pay much attention to things most of the time. For whatever reason, i tend to be someone who pays very close attention to everything. I guess if you think about it, clipmarks is kind of about paying attention to what you're reading and capturing the finer points that others may overlook (a stretch?) I've noticed that my daughter pays incredible attention to her surroundings and i think it's had an incredible impact on her ability to learn to speak.

Forbidden Fruit: Sex & Religion in the Lives of American Teenagers
jklugman

A book by sociologist Mark Regnerus looks at how religion affects teens sexual behaviors. It looks like his results are very counter-intuitive--religious teens are just as sexually active as non-religious ones. Hat tip to Hugo Schwyzer .

McCain's Radical Agenda
debbyski
by debbyski  9-16-2008    4
"This entire McCain health insurance transformation is right out of the right-wing Republicans’ ideological playbook: fewer regulations; let the market decide; and send unsophisticated consumers into the crucible alone. You would think that with some of the most venerable houses on Wall Street crumbling like sand castles right before our eyes, we’d be a little wary about spreading this toxic formula even further into the health care system. But we’re not even paying much attention. "

Cuil: Search engine to ravel Google Launches
shandora
by shandora  7-29-2008    4
For one, Cuil has an impressive pedigree with its three founders: Tom Costello of IBM's WebFountain project, plus Anna Patterson and Russell Power of Google's TeraGoogle project, Google's massive search index. Cuil also counts former AltaVista founder Louis Monier -- who later went to eBay and then Google -- as part of the team. These people know search. In particular, they know on-the-firing line, heavy duty, industrial strength search. Not only that, they're unleashing what appears to be a comprehensive service that anyone can use. Indeed, Google already did a blog post in reaction to Cuil and its size claims on Friday, before Cuil even launched or those claims became public. If Google's paying that much attention, then anyone should.

The Next Hacking Frontier: Your Brain?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  8-30-2009    1
As neural engineering becomes more complex and more widespread, the potential for security breaches will mushroom. For example, the next generation of implantable devices to control prosthetic limbs will likely include wireless controls that allow physicians to remotely adjust settings on the machine. If neural engineers don’t build in security features such as encryption and access control, an attacker could hijack the device and take over the robotic limb.

Japan child robot mimicks infant learning
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  4-8-2009
We are entering a new age of robotics. there is no doubt about that, at least in Japan. Robots integrated into everyday life is not only a technological feat but also a conceptual and social adaptation. In Japanese world view it is much easier to relate to robots as endowed with souls. This is fascinating, since it seems that we create our future technological world to reflect our beliefs and expectations. "Robots have hearts," said Kokoro planning department manager Yuko Yokota. "They don't look human unless we put souls in them. "When manufacturing a robot, there comes a moment when light flickers in its eyes. That's when we know our work is done." Public opinion in Japan may be more open to robots than in the West, where dark science fiction visions from movies such as "Bladerunner" and "Terminator" have conjured images of robo-soldiers taking over the world. Thanks to such benign cartoon characters as Astro Boy, "Japanese people have a friendly image towards robots

Facing Down Bullies (And Their Enablers)
debbyski
by debbyski  6-9-2009    6
"And I didn’t give even a moment’s thought to the bullies, and what their lifetime prognosis might be. Parents of these children need to be encouraged to demand that schools take action, and pediatricians probably need to be ready to talk to the principal. And we need to follow up with the children to make sure the situation gets better, and to check in on their emotional health and get them help if they need it. How about helping the bullies, who are, after all, also pediatric patients? Some experts worry that schools simply suspend or expel the offenders without paying attention to helping them and their families learn to function in a different way."
