POPSCanon supports secret garden in urban jungle to Greenwash their waste example of public-private partnership to support a local community garden in NYC. This is a call for community participation. Canon partnered with the American Park Network to offset their carbon with the purchase of trees. The APN then donates trees to local parks and works with community groups to plant them. It would be a cool deal, but it's not much coming from canon. Not while they continue to produce highly wasteful print cartridges, and as far as I can see still haven't come out with a refillable cartridge. Canon is so so NOT GREEN!

POPSTerence McKenna - Seeking the Stone Part 1 The first part of a video of the seminar , in which Terence McKenna present his perspective on the idea of a spiritual path for all and an impending transformation of the human world . In his singularly lucid , prosaic style , McKenna presents profoundly compelling ideas that challenge our beliefs and encourage our participation in the creation of a new social reality. He champions the individual’s freedom of choice in deciding one’s own sexual and spiritual development and techniques. He highlights the role of hallucinogenic plants in shamanic societies and their impact on the evolution of human cultures. See why this cyber-techno-shaman is drawing freethinking crowds wherever he speaks and find out what role you may play in the unfolding of our “post-historical future” as we approach a major “concresence” in human history.

POPSBig Difference in Post-Debate Spin Does Ifill Have a Conflict of Interest? The internet has been buzzing with charges that tonight's debate moderator, Gwen Ifill, has a conflict of interest because she is writing a book, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, that is due to be released on inauguration day in 2009. If nothing else, it creates the appearance of a conflict of interest, much as would a journalist's participation in a political rally or partisan political activity. This is the view taken by the Columbia Journalism Review: Gwen Ifill has done solid, important journalism. She’ll likely be a good, tough, and neutral moderator to the vice-presidential debate. Let’s set that aside, for now. Conflict of interest is often about appearances. There appears, to us, to be a conflict in Ifill moderating tomorrow night’s vice presidential debate. http://volokh.com/posts/chain_1222978481.shtml

POPSTNH: "Some things I know about moderating conversations in virtual space" It’s an inescapable truth that for some people, the most interesting way to participate in online discourse is to kick holes in the conversation. Others—many of them young, but some, alas, old enough to know better—have a sense of entitlement that leads them to believe that their having an opinion means the rest of us are obliged to listen to it. Still others plainly get off on verbally abusing others, and seek out conversations that will offer them opportunities to do so. Teresa Nielsen Hayden, who has been dubbed "the troll whisperer" for her moderation skills, on the dynamics of trolls and flamers, and how to moderate a discussion to encourage participation and discourage rudeness and abusive behavior.

POPSPublic Participation GIS This approach to development of the city and surrounding areas is exactly what we need. The people must be empowered with the information that is typically held by the government, development organizations, and those with developed computer skills and high-speed internet access. PPGIS will facilitate the participation of marginalized members of society in the creation of the ecocity. It can be integrated with accessibility software and accessed from libraries, computing centers, and other designated points in the neighborhood, and should be integrated with a user-friendly interface —such as google maps, rather than the more technologically and geographically -oriented interface employed in typical online GIS sites.

POPS20% of Profit from $700 Billion Snafu Pegged for Democrats' Pet PAC! While Democrats are busy waffling between blaming the whole standoff on McCain and claiming that he contributed little to the discussion (Pelosi called his participation a "blip"), these liberals failed to mention Dodd had earmarked 20% of profits from the $700 billion bailout to go to ACORN, a liberal PAC accused of vote fraud! Ask yourself why Pelosi's so hot to push a Bush plan in the first place...

POPS Barack Obama's Important Executive Experience
Mr. Ayers made presentations to board meetings chaired by Mr. Obama. Mr. Ayers spoke for the Collaborative before the board. Likewise, Mr. Obama periodically spoke for the board at meetings of the Collaborative. The Obama campaign has struggled to downplay that association. Last April, Sen. Obama dismissed Mr. Ayers as just "a guy who lives in my neighborhood," and "not somebody who I exchange ideas with on a regular basis." The point, says Mr. Ayers in his "Teaching Toward Freedom," is to "teach against oppression," against America's history of evil and racism, thereby forcing social transformation. The Obama campaign has cried foul when Bill Ayers comes up, claiming "guilt by association." Yet the issue here isn't guilt by association; it's guilt by participation. As CAC chairman, Mr. Obama was lending moral and financial support to Mr. Ayers and his radical circle. That is a story even if Mr. Ayers had never planted a single bomb 40 years ago.

POPSBut She Attends a Church Where They Speak in Tongues She vowed to go all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. “Without question, litigation challenging the Secretary's decision will be of immense significance to Alaska and the nation,” she said. “I would not be at all surprised if the case is ultimately decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. As governor, I believe that my responsibility requires full State participation beginning at the trial court and ending with the last appeal.” On Fox News, in an interview with Neil Cavuto she explained her reasoning. “We don`t believe that this speculation, again unprecedented, on computer modeling could forecast the effects of climate change, to the degree that leaves us in a comfortable position,” she said. “It’s just too far out into the future, this speculative modeling.”

POPSFidel Warns That It Would Be A Disaster If Chávez Was Assassinated
" Venezuelan oil is not sugar cane. It is a product which, although market prices were low at the time, such was the volume and quality that it generated a huge income in a currency that possessed tremendous acquisitive power for decades," read Chávez. "Your country achieved certain levels of industrial development," continued Fidel Castro in the letter that the South American leader said he would read in sections. "On your own merits and with tremendous popular support, you are assuming leadership of a people who received very little for what they produced," noted Fidel in his message, in reference to Chávez’ electoral triumph in 1998. "There was a surplus of workers, there was unemployment, the consumerism of the rich, their Yankee-style stores and services, they forced you to sell the workforce, they subjected it to inflation, they shamelessly sold your hard currency reserves" In contrast, Cuba relied solely on its income from sugar cane.

POPSPaul McCartney Becomes Terrorist Target
"Our enemy's friend is our enemy," the Muslim leader told the Sunday Express. A defiant McCartney has refused to cancel the Sept. 25 concert, despite protests from numerous political groups angry with Israel's policies in the West Bank. He told newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth: "I was approached by different groups and political bodies who asked me not to come here. I refused. I do what I think, and I have many friends who support Israel," McCartney said in an interview with newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth. McCartney will perform hits from his Beatles days and his solo career during a September 25 concert in Tel Aviv as part of a series of shows that has taken McCartney to cities he never visited before. Asked about how members of the Beatles, one of the most popular bands in rock history, felt when the Israeli government scrapped their concert in 1965 on the grounds it could corrupt the nation's youth, McCartney said it was "a bit insulting, the thought we could corrupt the youth."

POPSHow to Sell Yourself into an Online Teaching Position Participation in online learning takes many forms: instructor, supervisor, course designer, registrar, tech support—the list goes on. No matter what your background, if you decide to teach your first course—or seek additional teaching gigs—you must learn how to effectively sell yourself as the ideal instructor for a particular school. Of course, teacher requirements vary substantially with the institution. But after teaching online courses for 13 years, conducting national workshops on distance learning, and receiving feedback on my related writings over the years, I've assembled a list of broad-based tips, techniques, and requirements for scoring that online teaching gig:

POPSPalin to Discuss Gas Line Participation with North Slope Producers
Palin is expected to ask the companies in the coming days what they need to get onboard with the state-backed TransCanada project. "The governor is hopeful to have one-on-one conversations with oil industry executives in the near future," Leighow said. The governor's critics within the oil industry said they were amazed the administration has not undertaken these type of discussions before now, but state officials wanted to wait until legislators approved TransCanada's proposal. And then the whole vice president thing happened. Representatives of the oil companies declined to speculate on the subject of the call in advance, but all said they support efforts to commercialize their North Slope holdings. "We share a common objective with the governor to develop energy resources in the state of Alaska," said Charlie Rowton, Conoco spokesman. "We haven't always agreed on the specifics but we share her desire to achieve an outcome beneficial to all stakeholders.
