Vatican Condemns Hallowe'en
sahara
by sahara  10-31-2009    5
Last year a newspaper controlled by the Italian bishops, Avvenire, called for a boycott of Hallowe'en, calling it a "dangerous celebration of horror and the macabre" which could encourage "pitiless sects without scruples". Earlier this week the Catholic Church in Spain also condemned the growing popularity of Halloween, saying it threatened to overshadow the Christian festival of All Saints' Day. The Bishop of Siguenza-Guadalajara, Jose Sanchez, said there was a risk that Halloween could "replace Christian customs like devotion to saints and praying for the dead."

The Wind in the Willows
Socratoad
by Socratoad  10-24-2009
The major theme of the story is the struggle between the noisy, common way of life and the quiet and genteel. The Wild Wooders, including the stoats and the weasels, epitomize the former, while the River-Bankers, including Badger, Mole, Rat, and Toad, represent the latter. Toad is a lovable rebel who does not fit well into either camp. Structurally, the fantasy is a small epic in prose paralleling to some degree the events in Homer's Odyssey.

Demon Descends on College
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  10-7-2009    2
Demons allegedly took possession of a student at a N. Georgia college. Later in the day a troupe of gnomes trampled the gladiolas outside the student union building while just this morning a renegade unicorn was rumored to be harassing a pagan sacrifice on the quad. The Ghost Busters have been contacted.

Freedom of religion now means no religion, I guess. Jeremiah 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. Jeremiah 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. Jeremiah 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

'Massive' ancient wall uncovered in Jerusalem
ratilfar
by ratilfar  9-7-2009    1
"This is the most massive wall that has ever been uncovered in the City of David," Reich and Shukron said in a joint statement about the find. It marks the first time "that such massive construction that predates the Herodian period has been discovered in Jerusalem." It appears to be part of a "protected, well-fortified passage that descends to the spring tower from some sort of fortress that stood at the top of the hill," according to the joint statement. The spring "is located in the weakest and most vulnerable place in the area. The construction of a protected passage, even though it involves tremendous effort, is a solution for which there are several parallels in antiquity, albeit from periods that are later than the remains described here."

There are probably a lot more people who believe that the way humanity acts towards its mother, nature, is sacrilege. Most of the people who call themselves atheists and agnostics would tend towards this view, not to mention the Green Spirit tendancy in Christianity, Sufis, Ba'hais, most Hindus and Buddhists, all Taoists and virtually all surviving practicioners of native spirituality would concur. It looks like we are in the majority!

I found this article on the Pagan site, Witchvox. Now... let me just put this in context.... Scotland was once Pagan, then it became Catholic, then it became Presbyterian. Now the European Union is threatening to convert it to Equal. And this event is being covered by a Pagan publication. I don't know what all of this means, but it is fascinating.

Pagan police allowed religous holidays off work
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-17-2009
more: "It involves chanting, music, meditation, reading passages and for pagans the practices are seen to have the same power as prayer does for Christians. Most pagans practice some kind of conservation work as well to give something back to the planet." Hertfordshire Police allows Pc Pardy the eight pagan holidays off each year, including Hallowe'en, which signifies the Pagan new year, and the summer solstice in June. The days are deducted from his annual leave but because of his religion the days off are set in stone.
