Pipedream. Until you change the attitude of all those people who want to rule other people, or to kill other people for whatever reason, not one treaty will ever work. I would love to live in a world where guns would never be used against another person. But, as I said, it’s a pipedream.

Millions in Nepal facing hunger as climate changes
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-28-2009
Oxfam recommended in its report that the government and international organizations intervene to ease food shortages in hill and mountain districts and provide assistance during the upcoming planting season. The government should encourage farmers to try new crop varieties and improve water management, and it should integrate climate change strategies into government planning. Ang Dawa, a member of a parliamentary committee tackling climate change, said its effects were already prevalent in Nepal, especially in the mountainous north. She said her village in the foothills of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, was covered in several feet (dozens of centimeters) of snow during the winter when she was a child, but now there is hardly any snow.

European anti Semite gets Presidential Medal of Freedom
Roque Nuevo
by Roque Nuevo  7-30-2009    1
Mary was in charge of the infamous Durban I so-called anti racism conference, which turned into an anti Semitic festival. When she was replaced as UNHRC, Richard Holbrooke (today one of Obama's most senior diplomats) commented, "I think Sergio is much better than Mary Robinson. I think she overly politicized the job." But wait. There's more: The trouble starts with Robinson's tenure as president of Ireland. During the last four years of Robinson's tenure, the European Union donated large sums of money to the Palestinian Authority. Ireland even held the presidency of the European Union for the second half of 1996. During this time, Arafat siphoned large amounts of European aid money away to pay for terror. Robinson can plead ignorance, but documents seized during the recent Israeli incursion into the West Bank revealed that the Palestinian Authority spent approximately $9 million of European Union aid money

BBC advisor QUITS over Gaza appeal
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  2-11-2009
"I strongly wish to register my view that by justifying the decision to block the Gaza appeal on the ground of impartiality, the BBC's director-general has done greater reputational harm by implying that the DEC has not been objective in this case," reads his letter. Alam, a former vice-chair of aid organization War on Want, also said that he knew of at least one other committee member who was thinking about resigning over the decision. Despite the BBC refusal, the aid appeal raised more than £4 million for the besieged Gazans.

Disgraceful BBC Blockage on Gaza Aid Appeal

The BBC is wonderful. This clip is from the BBC. But who on earth is it in there who, over the past few years, has made the most atrocious decisions such as this which are totally at odds with the interests of the British public, and, in this case with all three main political parties?

Alexander offered to mediate between the charities and the broadcasters. "I understand from a statement issued to the press by the BBC that 'the decision was made because of question marks about the delivery of aid in a volatile situation'. "I stand ready to facilitate discussions with NGOs and charities to seek to address broadcasters' concerns on this point. The situation is developing on the ground and I understand that Oxfam, Save the Children and others have been able to get some aid into Gaza today." D.Alexander's Career History: 1990-1991: parliamentary researcher for Gordon Brown MP 1994-1997: solicitor Current position International development secretary Previous positions Minister for Europe, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2005 - 2007) Foreign Office and DTI minister for trade (2004 - 2005) Deputy Cabinet Office minister (2002 - 2004) Minister for e-commerce and competitiveness, department of trade and industry (2001 - 2002)

US Slips Down Development Index
sahara
by sahara  7-17-2008
Among other findings: * Of the world's richest nations, the US has the most children (15%) living in poverty * Of the OECD nations, the US has the most people in prison - as a percentage and in absolute numbers * 25% of 15-year-old students performed at or below the lowest level in an international maths test - worse than Canada, France, Germany and Japan * If the US infant mortality rate were equal to first-ranked Sweden, more than 20,000 babies would survive beyond their first year of life It also provides a snapshot of the inequalities between the richest and the poorest Americans and between different ethnic groups. "The Measure of America reveals huge gaps among some groups in our country to access opportunity and reach their potential," said the report's author, Sarah Burd-Sharps. "Some Americans are living anywhere from 30 to 50 years behind others when it comes to issues we all care about: health, education and standard of living.

Low tech best in China, Burma disasters
pokkets
by pokkets  5-14-2008
Sometimes the only way rescuers can dig someone out of the rubble, without making the situation more dangerous, is with their bare hands, after the Human ears of the searchers recognize cries for help. People who are drowning, or buried don't have the time to wait for technology to arrive, particularly in remote areas, where the survivors in an immediate area, who can start looking straight away, may be the only chance they have. In China, many hands seem to be on the job, While the regime in Burma are trying to wash their hands. Not as Pilate, but as Lady Macbeth. The Damned spot will not disappear.
