Gary Taubes: The great diet delusion
Lexica
by Lexica  10-23-2009
More: The institutionalised conviction that we get fat simply because we overeat is based on the kind of fallacious reasoning that would lead to a failing grade in a high-school logic class. The first law of thermodynamics tells us that energy is neither created nor destroyed, so the calories we consume must be either stored, expended or excreted. If we are getting fatter, we must be taking in more energy than we are giving out: we are overeating. But this does not tell us which direction the arrow of causality is pointing. Do we get fat because we overeat, or is some regulatory or hormonal phenomenon driving us to fatten and in turn causing us to overeat? Saying that obesity is explained by overeating and/or sedentary behaviour is like saying that chronic fatigue syndrome is explained by a lack of energy. It sounds obvious; it tells us nothing.

Was the photoshopped Ralph Lauren model fired for being overweight?
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-14-2009    1
Most of us know that a tall, young woman who weighs 120 pounds is not overweight. But Hamilton claims Ralph Lauren was dissatisfied with her body, and therefore fired her six months ago. However, the company continued to use her image, whittling down her arms, waist, thighs, and possibly several other body parts in the above ad. If they were so unhappy with how she looked, why not get another model for the campaign? Why use the photos and alter and distort them? Today, Ralph Lauren himself is distancing himself from the ad, claiming, "The image in question was mistakenly released and used in a department store in Japan and was not the approved image which ran in the U.S." So we're confused. They say the photoshopping was an error, that Hamilton is "beautiful and healthy," yet they allegedly fired her for her size? With all these apologies and statements it sounds like the brand still has yet to accept responsibility for their actions.

The "Vision Chart Effect" in health reporting
Lexica
by Lexica  10-8-2009
If a person is overweight, often that's the only thing a doctor will focus on. Your knees hurt? It's because you're fat! Your skin is breaking out? It's because you're fat! You have a cavity in a tooth? It's because you're fat! You're getting headaches? It's because you're fat! For many people, this eventually discourages them from going to see the doctor, even when they have a possibly-serious health problem. Like my mother. She'd spent a lifetime being told by doctors that all her problems were because she was fat. So when she felt a lump in her breast, she latched on to the (false) conventional wisdom that "if it hurts, it's not malignant." By the time she saw a doctor about it, it was stage 4 and had metastasized to her lymph nodes. She died at age 53. She was the smartest, funniest, most loving, toughest, most dynamic woman I've ever known. I miss her terribly every day. And she died as a result of fat prejudice. Yeah, I take this personally.

Mummy autopsy result 'was wrong'
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  9-30-2009
The first scientific autopsy on an ancient Egyptian mummy probably got the cause of death wrong, research suggests. By studying the thinning of the pelvic bone, he established the woman was 50-55 when she died. He also determined that she was a mother, and overweight. He then found that she had an ovarian tumour, and concluded that this - a condition he called ovarian dropsy - probably caused her death. However, the tumour has subsequently been found to be benign, and the UCL team believe the key to the woman's death was the fact that her lungs were inflamed. Tuberculosis was widespread in ancient Egypt and can cause these symptoms.

with their gross weight and with their desired weight in accordance with the Obama Manifesto, article 7, page 1277...'All citizens must conform to the Citizen's Weight Control Act of 2009.' According to the National Standards Board, certain individuals will be granted immunity if they meet the criteria for the 'Selected National Treasures Act.' in which overweight celebrities (Oprah), members of Congress,(Ted Kennedy) and others so designated, whos celebrity and political status and image would be harmed by adherring to the set standards. Two of the main camps will include environmental projects such as fitting 'fart-filters' on cows behinds, inspecting homes and levying 'carbon taxes, and helping Al 'lardass' Gore around on speaking tours while Gore flies on a personal jumbo jet that consumes millions of gallons of fuel. Of course, others will be needed just to carry his money bags from the lucrative engagements. Of course, like director Michael Moore, Mr. Gore is also Fat-e

Portion size, Then vs Now
