POPSA remarkably bitter take on the "top ten stories of the last decade" -- in short, we're hosed The last paragraph is worth quoting in full: "The meaninglessness of elections: This is the most embittering revelation of all. Despite the greatest electoral majority since Johnson crushed Goldwater in '64, Obama has betrayed everything he ran on. In every case where he had the opportunity to confront power " in financial bailouts, financial regulation, health care, wars and military spending, utilities and global warming, national surveillance " Obama has sided with the rich and powerful against the interests of the American people. He has probably engendered more cynicism, more disaffection with government than any president since Richard Nixon. It will deal a staggering blow to the hopes of mobilizing masses of people again for a real takeback of government. And he's not even one year into it."

POPSTips & techniques for homemade ice cream from Shuna Fish Lydon Lots of excellent technical advice, especially in the notes at the end of the recipe. More: Never cook high acid dairies like buttermilk, crème fraiche, yogurt, cultured cheeses. Always add high acid liquids to ice cream base after chilling it through and through. High acid liquids: citrus juice, the above dairies, molasses, fruit purees, vinegars, etc. An invert sugar is one that exists in nature as a liquid. Examples: corn syrups, glucose, honey, simple syrup, agave syrup, malt syrup, maple syrup, molasses, Lyle's Golden syrup, Treacle, etc. Both Invert Sugars and alcohol will lower the freezing temperature of ice creams and sorbet. Meaning that ice cream and sorbet will not freeze as hard if these are present. For example, it's almost impossible to make smooth chocolate ice cream without at least one invert sugar…

POPSSeed behemoth Monsanto stumbles into antitrust trouble (2) The Monsanto strategy of industry domination has worked brilliantly. It must be irritating to be so reviled for such success. Can the money really make up for the notoriety? It must also be a drag trying to pretend that GM is the answer to world food shortages, when independent studies indicate that the technology does not even increase yield after the first couple of years. By then the farmers are dependent. It's the classic drug-pusher marketing technique which is why it is so successful and so damaging.

POPSEating It? BPA Found in Surprising Places Canned foods are thought to be the predominate route of BPA exposure. * Buy prepared foods in jars when possible–especially tomatoes and tomato sauce. * Opt for fresh produce when you can, choose frozen produce over canned. * Use dried beans instead of canned beans ---------------------- Enfamil formula appears to have the highest concentrations of the 20 tests. The only solution here is to use alternatives to canned formula --------------- avoid #7 plastics, especially for children’s food. Plastics with the recycling labels #1, #2 and #4 on the bottom are safer choices and do not contain BPA.

POPSConsumer Reports finds BPA in most canned foods More: …our findings are notable because they indicate the extent of potential exposure: Consumers eating just one serving of the canned vegetable soup we tested would get about double what the FDA now considers typical average dietary daily exposure… A 165-pound adult eating one serving of canned green beans from our sample, which averaged 123.5 ppb, could ingest about 0.2 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight per day, about 80 times higher than our experts' recommended daily upper limit. And children eating multiple servings per day of canned foods with BPA levels comparable to the ones we found in some tested products could get a dose of BPA approaching levels that have caused adverse effects in several animal studies… Drinking three servings per day of canned apple juice with BPA levels comparable to the levels found in our samples could result in a dose of BPA that is more than our experts' daily upper limit.

POPSCall your SENATORS......today! Nor does much of the rest of Mr. Siddiqui’s résumé. The White House has touted his role in the first phase of developing national organic standards. But those standards, as they first emerged in draft form in the Clinton years, were notoriously loose about allowing genetically engineered crops and the use of sewage-sludge fertilizers to be labeled as “organic.”
