Commonly overused words
Aribeth
by Aribeth  2-26-2008    15
"When you write, use the most precise word for your meaning, not the word that comes to mind first. Consult this thesaurus to find alternatives for some commonly overused words. Consult a full-length thesaurus to find alternatives to words that do not appear here. Keep in mind that the choices offered in a thesaurus do not all mean exactly the same thing. Review all the options, and choose the one that best expresses your meaning."

Bush's America: LESS Safe, LESS Free.
righthand
by righthand  8-30-2007    9
In a new book, "Less Safe, Less Free: Why America Is Losing the War on Terror," law professors David Cole and Jules Lobel argue that the problem lies in the aggressive "preventive paradigm" the Bush administration adopted in the wake of 9/11.

Brain Imaging Helps Explain Behavior
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-8-2008    2
The fMRI study showed that, during the viewing of angry faces, the activity of a structure called the insula, involved in the response to unpleasant situations, depended on which version of the CREB1 gene a participant inherited. “We were surprised to see that variation in the CREB1 gene would account for more than 20 percent of the difference in how healthy participants weighed different options and expressed specific preferences,”

How to Break All the Rules
wildcat
by wildcat  5-26-2008
“Tell me, Rabo–” said Slazinger, “if I put on that same paint with the same roller, would the picture still be a Karabekian?” “Absolutely,” I said, “provided you have in reserve what Karabekian has in reserve.” “Like what?” he said. “Like this,” I said. There was dust in a pothole in the floor, and I picked up some of it on the balls of both my thumbs. Working both thumbs simultaneously, I sketched a caricature of Slazinger’s face on the canvas in thirty seconds. “Jesus!” he said. “I had no idea you could draw like that!” “You’re looking at a man who has options,” I said.

Why we may overlook extra-terrestrial life
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-17-2008    5
Ammonia, for example, has many of the same properties as water. An ammonia or ammonia-water mixture, stays liquid at much colder temperatures than plain water.Hydrogen fluoride methanol, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen chloride, and formamide have all been suggested as suitable solvents that could theoretically support alternative biochemistry. All of these “water replacements” have pros and cons when considered in our terrestrial environment. What needs to be considered is that with a radically different environment, comes radically different reactions. Water and carbon might be the very last things capable of supporting life in some extreme planetary conditions. In any case, it is not beyond the realm of feasibility that our first encounter with extra-terrestrial life will not be a solely carbon-based occasion.

"There are many non-military measures to "contain" Iran, including a de-escalation of rhetoric and hysteria all around, and agreeing to negotiations in earnest for the first time — if indeed all options are on the table."

Your Internet Ego
Aribeth
by Aribeth  1-23-2008    7
"You ain't shit until you do something. Your little bullshit activities that amount to nothing are just personal pretense, you pretending to be important when you're not. You might want to come onboard our site, and read, and learn, and we have no objection to that. But when you do nothing when you know what the truth is, well, that's cowardice and laziness, and you deserve whatever fate this world throws out you."

When To Have A Child? A New Approach To The Decision
Mohir
by Mohir  11-10-2007
The example of a 20-year-old college student illustrates the situation when a woman claims she does not want to have a child until she reaches a certain age, say 35 years old. The model suggests that, especially in cases where both family life and career are important to the woman, having a child much earlier may be a better long-term solution than waiting until she is more established in her career.
