Another Bailout – GMAC To Get More Money
merrie
by merrie  12-30-2009    1
GMAC says they want to prepare itself to repay the U.S. Government. Is taking more tax payer funds a necessary step before repaying the Government? I don’t know what kind of math GMAC is using to come up with an idiotic statement like that, but if it is the same math they use to balance the books at their retail bank (Ally Bank) then I would run as fast as I could away from that one. The mortgage-related write-downs to be announced as early as this week will affect assets held by ResCap and Ally Bank, GMAC’s online bank. Ally Bank was created after the company received approval in late 2008 to convert to a bank holding company and qualify for government money under TARP. The arrangement left the Federal Reserve with regulatory authority over the parent. From the Ally Bank web site: Who we are We are Ally Bank, built on the foundation of GMAC Financial Services. And with that experience we’ve learned that these times demand change .....

China unveils 'world's fastest train link'
ratilfar
by ratilfar  12-26-2009    1
Test runs for the service began earlier in December and the link officially went into service when the first scheduled train left the eastern metropolis of Wuhan on Saturday. By comparison, the average for high-speed trains in Japan was 243 kilometres per hour while in France it was 277 kilometres per hour, said Xu Fangliang, general engineer in charge of designing the link, according to Xinhua. Beijing has an ambitious rail development programme aimed at increasing the national network from the current 86,000 kilometres to 120,000 kilometres, making it the most extensive rail system outside the United States. China unveiled its first high-speed line at the time of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 -- a service linking the capital with the port city of Tianjin.

Asked by one reporter how building golf courses would contribute towards US counterinsurgency strategy, Woods replied: 'It's about winning hearts and minds and connecting with the people. Most of the Taliban are not fighting for ideology, but out of sheer boredom. I believe the spiritual and healing qualities of golf can succeed where bullets and tanks have not. '

Re: Kelika's Clip-Stealth boat Ady Gil

Intriguing clip by Kelika led me to do a little research. More from the article below: "Now the newly-renamed vessel has been unveiled as the Sea Shepherd's new weapon in the organisation's sixth campaign against whaling, Operation Waltzing Mathilda, which will launch from Australia early next month. The craft, which is capable of up to 50 knots, will be used to intercept and physically block harpoon ships from illegally slaughtering whales. The Ady Gil and the Steve Irwin are the two remaining ships in the Sea Shepherd Society’s fleet. A third vessel – the Farley Mowat – was sent to protest against Canadian seal hunting last year and was seized by offiicials."

China begins 1000 km high speed rail link

by pkronfield  12-26-2009
I recently took the 330 km/hr (200+ mph) train from Beijing to Tianjin. It is stunning, smooth, and ultra modern. Now this is real stimulus. Our U.S. administration are total idiots first by a stiulus that is nothing but political pork, and throwing good money after bad in bailing out the failing U.S. car industry. The U.S. does not have anything comparing to this Chinese train. Our infrastructure is failing badly, and we are rapidly becoming a third world country, thanks to the fools who voted in an empty suit marxist president.

FALSE FLAGS

What foreign threat did they envisage as the United States’ most deadly enemy? Actually, the founding fathers believed one of our biggest enemies would rise from within: apathetic ignorance. Thomas Jefferson wrote, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” One hundred and forty-five years later, President Eisenhower echoed Jefferson’s fear when he left office in 1961: In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and

Where is the Senate Democrats' health care bill? Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) wants to know. Oh, this mysterious legislation will transform--or perhaps destroy--one-sixth of the US economy. From a McConnell press release: WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor Friday regarding the importance of getting it right on health care reform: The majority leader has signaled that he will finally unveil the most significant piece of domestic legislation in modern history some time on Saturday — and force a vote in the middle of the night about 36 hours later. This is outrageous. This will be a bill that none of my constituents have seen; that none of the Majority Leader’s constituents have seen; that none of you have seen and that nobody outside of the Capitol has seen. read more ........ http://bit.ly/729Q0G marathonpundit

British Court Issued Gaza Arrest Warrant for Former Israeli Minister Tzipi Livni
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-15-2009    2
It is the second time in less than three months that lawyers have gone to Westminster magistrates court asking for a warrant for the arrest of an Israeli politician. In September, the court was asked to issue one for the arrest of Ehud Barak, Israel's defence minster, under the 1988 Criminal Justice Act, which gives courts in England and Wales universal jurisdiction in war crimes cases. According to Israeli sources, ministers who wish to visit the UK in a personal capacity have begun asking the Israeli embassy in London to arrange meetings with British officials. These, offer legal protection against arrest, and can be attended if the officials do face any threat of arrest. Livni, crucially, cannot enjoy any such immunity as she is an ex-minister. Ehud Olmert, the former prime minister, is in the same position.

UN-Backed Troops Accused of Killing & Raping Civilians

British-based organization Oxfam said. Human Rights Watch said it documented the killings of 732 civilians between January and September by the Congolese army and troops from neighboring Rwanda fighting alongside it. In the same period, it counted 701 civilians killed by the rebels they are fighting. “Some victims were tied together before their throats were, according to one witness, ’slit like chickens.’ The majority of the victims were women, children, and the elderly,” the group said. More than 7,500 cases of sexual violence against women and girls were registered at health centers during that nine-month period, nearly double that of 2008 and likely representing only a fraction of the total. The American right wing has gone off the rails, into the bushes, and off the cliff. I won’t be going over the cliff with them.

This site presents some amazing tests that help you explore your hidden beliefs. More from the site below: "Project Implicit blends basic research and educational outreach in a virtual laboratory at which visitors can examine their own hidden biases. Project Implicit is the product of research by three scientists whose work produced a new approach to understanding of attitudes, biases, and stereotypes. The Project Implicit site (implicit.harvard.edu) has been functioning as a hands-on science museum exhibit, allowing web visitors to experience the manner in which human minds display the effects of stereotypic and prejudicial associations acquired from their socio-cultural environment."

Henry's Brain Lives On

"Last week, a year after Molaison's death, Annese and his team began cutting the brain into thousands of slices, the first phase of a project that will use new technology to preserve the 83-year-old brain. The work will produce both highly magnified images of the brain that will be available on the Internet and a collection of tissue slices that can be used by researchers worldwide. It will offer a digital map of Molaison's brain in extremely fine detail, a way to re-examine theories based on examinations of him in life, perhaps leading to new insights into the mind responsible for so much of what we know about memory."

"Drug War" Does More Harm Than Marijuana
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  11-16-2009    2
Another essay from J.H.. More below: " and so are today's leaders (from the White House to nearly all local governments), who are keeping us mired in the longest, most costly, and most futile war in U.S. history: the drug war. As one adamant opponent of this ongoing madness put it, "I cannot help but wonder how many more lives, and how much more money, will be wasted before another Robert McNamara admits what is plain for all to see: the War on Drugs is a failure. Americans are paying too high a price in lives and liberty for a failing War on Drugs, about which our leaders have lost all sense of proportion." That was no ex-hippie stoner expressing himself through a haze of herbal smoke. It was America's "Uncle Walter," the journalistic icon Walter Cronkite, calling earlier this year for a new truthfulness and sanity in American drug policy.

I would provide him a force of 30,000, which is fully 75% of a 110% commitment. When you multiply it out, that's... let's see... that's almost an 83% total commitment to mission success! Not only that, I also pledged to provide you with all the healthy snacks and juice boxes you will need until the designated 5:30 pickup time. As an extra bonus to help you out, I secured a commitment of 10,000 additional special troops from our European allies. In fact, I think I see one of them in the back seat -- there in the blue bicycle helmet. What's your name son? Pierre? That's... okay... okay, Pierre, please stop crying. Yes, I promised Mr. Sarkozy you'll be home soon. Now before we back out of the driveway, we must ask ourselves an important question: who hasn't gone to the bathroom? Raise your hands now, because we have a long drive ahead of us. Nobody? Sure? Because man, after that third cup of coffee I'm thinking I better make a safety pee. I'll be right back,
