The best financial advice given to me: Make sure you at least have a shotgun and plenty of ammo. If things go to pot, there’s a lot of things you’ll need to survive, but you can always get them later if you at least have a shotgun. A shotgun should be the foundation of any stable portfolio.

Degree in Shit Shoveling Introduced
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-15-2009
"We're really exited about the Horse Shit department," said Alex Fowler, Head of Excrement at Derby. "We can now compete with our major rivals, who also offer shit degrees." Michael Smith, who attends Derbyshire college "Joseph Wright", has already sent his application to Derby with UCAS, an online service for higher education enrolment. "It looks quite easy," said Smith, "and, after all, a degree's a degree, right?" Ireland already has lots of horseshit degrees

Cash for Clubbers
kareval
by kareval  10-28-2009    1
The golf-cart boom has followed an IRS ruling that golf carts qualify for the electric-car credit as long as they are also road worthy. These qualifying golf carts are essentially the same as normal golf carts save for adding some safety features, such as side and rearview mirrors and three-point seat belts. They typically can go 15 to 25 miles per hour. In South Carolina, sales of these carts have been soaring as dealerships alert customers to Uncle Sam's giveaway. "The Golf Cart Man" in the Villages of Lady Lake, Florida is running a banner online ad that declares: "GET A FREE GOLF CART. Or make $2,000 doing absolutely nothing!"

To Err is Human: Institute of Medicine report on reducing preventable medical errors
Lexica
by Lexica  9-16-2009
Sadly, it's now 10 years after its release, and most of its recommendations have not been heeded. More: To Err Is Human asserts that the problem is not bad people in health care--it is that good people are working in bad systems that need to be made safer. Comprehensive and straightforward, this book offers a clear prescription for raising the level of patient safety in American health care. It also explains how patients themselves can influence the quality of care that they receive once they check into the hospital. This book will be vitally important to federal, state, and local health policy makers and regulators, health professional licensing officials, hospital administrators, medical educators and students, health caregivers, health journalists, patient advocates--as well as patients themselves.

Polls show atheists on the rise in America
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-27-2009    57
The American Religious Identification Survey recently found the number of people who claimed “no religion” had nearly doubled nationally over the last 18 years, to 15 percent. They were the only demographic that increased in all 50 states. Some attribute the surge to outrage over former president George W. Bush and his courting of the religious right. Others mention a slew of best-selling books about atheism that have recently fueled debate. But there’s no doubt the Internet is playing a role too. It offers atheist dating services, and helps nonbelievers meet up — people who might otherwise remain “loners.” “I’m happy to attend any religious observances where the food is good,” said one non-believer. For others, atheism is a cause. Along with freethinking and agnostic groups, they are beginning to lobby Congress on everything from stem cell research to civil rights.

Rear-Facing Car Seats Protect Older Children
billpar
by billpar  8-26-2009
in contrast to forward-facing seats, rear-facing seats provide full alignment of the head, neck, and spine, so that crash forces are dispersed over these areas rather than centered on one site. The message for healthcare professionals, the authors say, is that they should recommend rear-facing car seats for children under 4 years of age. To fully address the issue, however, seat manufacturers and retailers need to "increase the availability of rear-facing car seats for children over 20 pounds."

Taraneh was Raped and Killed by Security Agents
merrie
by merrie  7-17-2009    4
"Taraneh’s voice will always sing in my ears” “Yes, an unidentified person, probably one of her abductors, called and said Taraneh had a moral problem and that she hadn’t been arrested at all. He said she had been raped and her womb and anus had been torn and she had wanted to kill herself by throwing herself in front of a car. He said she had been brought to Emam Khomeini Hospital in Karaj and that she had also tried to kill herself there with a serum tube. The family immediately went to the hospital but Taraneh’s name wasn’t registered at the hospital. However one of the nurses confidentially told one of her friends that some days previously a girl answering these particulars had been brought to the hospital in a state of unconscious and had been removed again after a couple of hours. Hearing this, we guessed that Taraneh had probably been brought to the hospital in the last moments of her life after suffering repeated rape. We grew very worried.

more: Neil Armstrong was a civilian Astronaut, not a member of the Air Force. He had been a Naval combat pilot, and then became a civilian test pilot for the X-15. 3. Though Neil Armstrong was the first to walk on the moon, Michael Collins was the Command Module pilot, and Buzz Aldrin was the Lunar Module pilot. 4. As the Lunar Module made its descent, alarm bells went off signalling program problems, which could have led to aborting the mission. Back at Mission Control, Flight Controller Steve Bales identified the alarms as resulting from computer overload, and okayed the landing. Bales would later receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role. 5. The Lunar Module landing site was improvised after finding the planned site too rocky for safety. For a while Mission Control had no idea of the location of the module or the astronauts, and Astronaut Mike Collins who was orbiting the moon in the command module never saw the landin

Lawmaker wants to blur Google Earth
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  3-11-2009    1
First of all, don’t try to pass a law based on what a foreign nation does. Secondly, this law is stupid because ‘blurred images’ would be a red flag showing where the ‘target’ buildings are. Thirdly, IF anyone wants to target these buildings they most certainly would have intelligence on the ground verifying the location and detail anyway making this ‘exercise in bill writing’ superfluous. Why do we have to suffer legislators writing ‘busy work’ laws just so they can pat themselves on the back so they can say “public safety is my No. 1 job”? Any bombings and/or security problems in the past were not done with the help of Google Earth there is no reason to believe that Google Earth will make it easier in the future. What’s your opinion?
