Newspaper Industry Bailout on The Way?
merrie
by merrie  12-3-2009
Waxman’s “indication that government has a role to play is both bold and soberly sensible,” said Free Press Policy Director Ben Scott on the sidelines of the FTC conference. At the Federal Communications Commission, officials are embarking on a quadrennial review of the state of U.S. media. The study, which is mandated by Congress, seeks to determine whether current rules should be changed to allow for a more vibrant media industry serving a diverse audience. Sponsored search results lead to malware
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-8-2009
If you're not sure, verify the URL. Microsoft and Google have large payrolls, but the search giants don't employ literal armies to review ad submissions. If you're at all suspicious of an ad's legitimacy, check the URL via a service such as hpHosts, which tracks domain names that researchers have reported as malicious. Help vendors by reporting malicious advertisers. To report bogus ads on Google, e-mail security at google.com. This is likely to be more effective than reporting the site via the search giant's online form. If you discover malware purveyors advertising in Bing's results, e-mail secure at microsoft.com. Yahoo, however, offers only a Security Phishing Report Form.

The Sell-Phone Revolution
merrie
by merrie  9-27-2009
Already, mobile services use area codes, Zip Codes, and even Global Positioning System (GPS) data to return results for nearby businesses in response to a search for, say, coffee shops. The next step is to serve an ad for a steaming cup of java on a mobile Web page just as the cell-phone Web surfer is passing a Starbucks (SBUX ). Within five years, online ad networks such as TACODA and Specific Media Inc. plan to apply behavioral techniques"using surfing data"to target ads to broadband-enabled digital television. It's not hard to imagine the day when multiple TVs tuned to the same channel in the same household will serve up different ads. "There is no question behavioral targeting will be a major component of television," says Dave Morgan, TACODA's founder and chairman. Polls show atheists on the rise in America
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-27-2009    57
The American Religious Identification Survey recently found the number of people who claimed “no religion” had nearly doubled nationally over the last 18 years, to 15 percent. They were the only demographic that increased in all 50 states. Some attribute the surge to outrage over former president George W. Bush and his courting of the religious right. Others mention a slew of best-selling books about atheism that have recently fueled debate. But there’s no doubt the Internet is playing a role too. It offers atheist dating services, and helps nonbelievers meet up — people who might otherwise remain “loners.” “I’m happy to attend any religious observances where the food is good,” said one non-believer. For others, atheism is a cause. Along with freethinking and agnostic groups, they are beginning to lobby Congress on everything from stem cell research to civil rights.

That means less traffic to his websites, and more alternative sources. and anyone subscribing can just spread the info as it comes out. why pay for “state approved” news anyway? i cant think of anything more useless."

Two clips combined. Murdoch has unsuccessfully forecast the death of the web. Now he has suddenly realized he was wrong and that he must change. Bit of a shock. He still has to get more people to want to read his conservative, servile crap. Maybe he could try telling the news as it happened, not with his slant on it. (His paper is in trouble again here. Let out the "terrorist round up" news before the op had begun.)

Easy Google Profit And Other Work-At-Home Scams
merrie
by merrie  7-27-2009    2
Then it zeroes in on, and praises “Easy Google Profit,” which offers people work from home posting links on Web sites using text advertising applications. It all looked legitimate; except, as the reporter points out, the “Miami Gazette” does not exist. And in tiny, hard to read type below the newspaper logo, the following statement appeared: “This publication is an article advertisement for Easy Google Profit.” The reporter’s friend didn’t notice the warning signs and signed up with her debit card. She had unknowingly authorized this scam work-at-home company to charge $72 to her debit card every month until she called to cancel. For example, in April, 2009, the Texas Attorney General filed a complaint against Infusion Media, Inc., a company that allegedly ran at least three sham work-at-home websites, two of which capitalized on the Google brand: GoogleMoneyTree.com, Google TreasureChest.com and InternetIncomeIntiative.com.

Judge Says Hyperlinks Should Be Banned to Save Newspapers
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-2-2009    1
Gawker’s Hamilton Nolan: No linking or paraphrasing? Let's Screw Up the Entire Internet to Save Newspapers! You can copyright a news story, but you can't copyright the news. "The news" just means "things that happen in the world." What would it mean, in practice, to make it illegal to paraphrase a copyrighted news story? Summing up, for example, political events, or a sports controversy, or even a fashion trend, could be interpreted as paraphrasing copyrighted material. So let's ban talking about anything. And banning links will help us make our references even more obscure, by making it impossible for anyone to refer to source materials! Good idea, Posner.

Z news - What the SABC didn't want you to see

Mail & Gaurdian puts up SABC unedited special assignment clip on internet but then gets sued. http://www.zapiro.com/scripts/Zapiro/hfclient.isa?A=Zapiro_Live&L=0O1242483095&AS=FIND|MP|99.00.01&F=2 Z-News seeks new online platform The producers of Z News, a news satire co-developed by award winning South African cartoonist Zapiro, is seeking alternative distribution channels after the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) pulled the plug on the show before the pilot even aired. The SABC reportedly spent close to R1 million on development before the show got canned. The producers are currently in discussions with numerous major online publishers to offer them a daily feed of the show, with revenue being generated through a mix of syndication fees, sponsorship/ advertising and mobile downloads. "Its a new model for South Africa, but potentially a great way to bypass TV and provide uniquely local, healthy and much needed satire."
