POPSreview: Oasis Market & Restaurant, Oakland More: I've been in a few more times recently, and I still really like this place, but with some reservations. The biggest issue is the confusion behind the food counter; I don't know if it's a language issue, or just some new workers or both, but every time I've been in recently people seem to not be quite sure of what's going on, can't totally answer some simple questions, have made the wrong food, there have been long delays, forgotten items, things like that. So just pay close attention to your order when you go there for the meals, and bring your patience. There's also a little inconsistency; I've had great dolmas and kabobs there, but the last time I got each item they were both not quite right, the meat was tough and the dolmas were a little hard. The good: the falafels have been fantastic every time I've had them, the baba ganoush is the best that I've ever had, the pita is still pillowy and delicious…

POPSfood of the week: Turkey A Few Quick Serving Ideas: Use turkey instead of ground beef in chili con carne recipes. On a bed of romaine lettuce, serve diced turkey, cooked cubed sweet potatoes, cranberries and walnuts tossed with a light vinagrette for a salad that emanates the flavors of Thanksgiving. Use ground turkey to make turkey burgers or turkey meat loaf. Say olé to turkey burritos. Place cooked turkey pieces on a corn tortilla, sprinkle with shredded cheese and diced tomatoes and onions. Broil for a few minutes until hot. Turkey salad can be prepared numerous ways and can be served for lunch or dinner. One of our favorite recipes is to combine the turkey with celery, leeks, dried apricots and almonds.

POPSOakland’s Little Guatemala – The early bird gets the tamale … and churrasco More: The tamales were pretty terrific too, tied with a little string. If you eat them there, the tamale lady unties the banana leaf and the fragrant wonderfulness perfumes the air. There is also a onion/pepper sauce which I was warned was hot … no kidding. Extra points for the woman being in native costume with her Guatemalan skirt, pink frilly apron and long-braided hair. She only sold the atole and tamales and had a larger variety of tamales, chicken, beef, pork and cheese…A half a block up from tamale lady #2 is another tamale vendor. I was so stuffed at this point that I didn’t even get out of the car to check it out. However, she has some sort of coleslaw with her tamales and three types of sauce…It is always surprising to me the food that can be found only early in the morning, the vendors vanishing like the dew once the sun rises in the sky. I have to get up early more…or stay up later.

Put flour, salt and pepper in a large ziploc bag. 2. Heat oil over medium heat in a large dutch oven. 3. Place meat in bag with the flour and shake until well coated. 4. Shake off meat pieces and add them to the oil and stir until slightly browned, Add remaining flour from the bag and the finely chopped onion. 5. Stir until well browned. 6. Add finely chopped carrot and next 4 ingredients.

POPSrecipe: Clean-out-the-fridge frittata More: This particular frittata got wrapped up and taken to Seward Park for a dinner picnic, which is almost as good an idea as Clean Out the Fridge Frittata. Imagine a dinner party where you invite all the interesting people you don’t see nearly enough, but with the added benefit of not having to clean your house. It’s genius, I tell you. Throw in some blankets, some grapes, salad, bread, cheese, a bottle of wine, and cookies or cupcakes (or in our case, both!) and you have the makings of a very fine evening indeed. POPSFood of the Week: Cabbage A few quick serving ideas: Cabbage leaves are a great way to inspire leftovers. Spoon some leftovers such as rice salad or a vegetable mixture onto the center of a cabbage leaf and roll into a neat little package. Bake in medium heat oven until hot. Enjoy your easy and healthy version of stuffed cabbage, a traditional eastern European dish. Braise red cabbage with a chopped apple and red wine. This is a child-friendly dish, since the alcohol (but not the flavor or the flavonoids) will evaporate. Combine shredded red and white cabbage with fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and seasonings such as turmeric, cumin, coriander and black pepper to make coleslaw with an Indian twist. Sauté cabbage and onions and serve over cooked buckwheat for a hardy side dish. Use shredded raw cabbage as a garnish for sandwiches.

POPSFood of the week: Tomatoes Tomatoes are a great addition to bean and vegetable soups. Enjoy a classic Italian salad-sliced onions, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese drizzled with olive oil. Combine chopped onions, tomatoes, and chili peppers for an easy to make salsa dip. Purée tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers and scallions together in a food processor and season with herbs and spices of your choice to make the refreshing cold soup, gazpacho. Add tomato slices to sandwiches and salads. To keep things colorful, use yellow, green and purple tomatoes in addition to red ones. ~~~~ Most delicious are Jersey tomatoes that you pick from your garden, wash, and bite. so sweet.....

POPSFood of the Week: cucumbers A Few Quick Serving Ideas: Use half-inch thick cucumber slices as petite serving "dishes" for chopped vegetable salads. Mix diced cucumbers with sugar snap peas and mint leaves and toss with rice wine vinaigrette. For refreshing cold gazpacho soup that takes five minutes or less to make, simply purée cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers and onions, then add salt and pepper to taste. Add diced cucumber to tuna fish or chicken salad recipes.
