NONE OF US ARE FREE ...until we all are free

"World needs a vacation from USA"
syncopath
by syncopath  9-24-2008    5
He called for immediate technology transfer from the West to the Third World, to allow development based on clean technology — stressing the need to “reject intellectual property rights”. funds should not be distributed through the World Bank, which was trying to regain legitimacy by portraying itself as a “climate bank” while continuing to push fossil-fuel-driven development. Confronting global poverty and climate change means confronting US power. “I don’t think the world needs US leadership”, he said. “They should be more humble.” Whether the US achieves its goals “is where we, as civil society come in”, Bello said, suggesting that, by making intervention costly for the US, civil society could encourage a “new US isolationism”. The struggle is, he stressed, global. “The world needs a vacation from the messaianism of the US … A few decades of a self-absorbed US would be very good for the world.”

Are You REALLY A Woman?
debbyski
by debbyski  7-30-2008    9
"The tests never unmasked a man posing as a woman, but they did turn up several athletes who were born with genetic defects that made them appear — according to lab results, at least — to be men. In 1967, the Polish sprinter Ewa Klobukowska was barred from the sport because she failed the chromosomal test, even though she had passed the nude test a year earlier. In the 1980s, the Spanish hurdler Maria José Martínez Patino was disqualified because the test revealed, to her surprise, that she was born with a Y chromosome. Her eligibility was reinstated in 1988. The practice came under increasing criticism in the 1990s by doctors, scientists and athletes who argued that the tests were not just invasive, but were also bad science."

Evolution of the Olympic Torch
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-13-2008    5
The 2008 Beijing Olympic torch can reportedly withstand winds of up to 40 miles an hour (65 kilometers an hour), partly due to the flat top of its Chinese-scroll-based design, according to engineer Richard Kelso. The exterior of the torch is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy and is decorated with 56 swirling clouds, one for each of China's ethnic groups.<<

Stand with Tibet - Support the Dalai Lama
asphere
by asphere  3-22-2008    3
" China's economy is totally dependent on "Made in China" exports that we all buy, and the government is keen to make the Olympics in Beijing this summer a celebration of a new China, respected as a leading world power. China is also a very diverse country with a brutal past and has reason to be concerned about its stability -- some of Tibet's rioters killed innocent people. But President Hu must recognize that the greatest danger to Chinese stability and development comes from hardliners who advocate escalating repression, not from Tibetans who seek dialogue and reform. Come on, you know what he meant!
egoldstein
by egoldstein  3-20-2009    20
All the bruhaha around Obama's special olypmics comment is ridiculous. You know he didn't mean to disrespect them and you know he didn't mean it the way it came out. It was a mistake and shouldn't have been said, but come on. Palin's comment that she hopes it does "not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community" is a cheap shot and stupid. She's knows damn well that's not the case and to suggest otherwise about the president of the united states is shameful.

Yellow Submarine to be remade by Disney

more: The band made a live-action cameo appearance in the final scene of the 1968 film. The new version of Yellow Submarine will be made in performance-capture 3-D, a medium explored by Zemeckis in The Polar Express, Beowulf and the forthcoming Jim Carrey vehicle A Christmas Carol. The use of 3-D technology is being touted as the future of Hollywood cinema, with James Cameron’s soon-to-be-released Avatar generating the biggest cinematic buzz of the year.

Danes Explain Why Obama Failed
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-3-2009    7
I don't quite see it exactly as the article expresses it. The people I have talked to, don't see it as Obama failing, as much as America in general, failing. Obama's (USA's) appearance here left many with a sense, that America somehow felt entitled to get the games, merely because they wanted them. Now they seem "in shock" because their wishes weren't accommodated, obviously disregarding the fact that Rio deserved to win. I am very happy on behalf of Rio and I think they're gonna put on a hell of a show. .:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGfJ0_KMiro
