POPSi-Aroma The company has already launched a scent-producing store signage system, piloted a mobile fragrance communication system and premiered smell-enhanced movies in Japanese theaters. With the i-Aroma, a more personal olfactory experience is on the way for volunteers lucky enough to be involved in the trial

POPSAutumn is Apple Time Early varieties include the classic Red Delicious, which are striped to solid and red, and have a sweet taste; and the Jonagold, a cross between a Jonathan and a Golden Delicious, and are bright red and can be sweet or slightly tart. Later varieties include Rome, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Jonathan. Romes are a deep red and are slightly sweet. Fuji’s range in color from gold to red and often have red striping, and are great for snacking. Granny Smith apples are green, tart apples that are perfect for baking. Jonathans have light red stripes over deep red or yellow and are slightly tart. For a quick and easy simmered fall punch, combine 2 cups apple juice, 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 2 or 3 cloves. Simmer on the stove for 20 to 30 minutes. POPSDiscovery of natural odors could help develop mosquito repellents "CO2 emitted in human breath is the main attractant for the Culex mosquito to find people, aiding the transmission of these deadly diseases," Ray said. "In our experiments we identified hexanol, and a related odor, butanal, as strong inhibitors of CO2-sensitive neurons in Culex mosquitoes. These compounds can now be used to guide research in developing novel repellents and masking agents that are economical and environmentally safe methods to block mosquitoes' ability to detect CO2 in our breath, thereby dramatically reducing mosquito-human contact." Woah, this is just great! This should be a great reason to celebrate, once thei're done with the repellent. I think there isn't one person in the planet who hasn't got mad with mosquitos at one time or another. Great news, just great.

POPSSneaky Orchid Drives Wasps Wild A study in the journal Current Biology finds that an orchid mimics the alarm chemical signal of bees to attract the bees' predatory wasps, all to get the wasps to pollinate the orchids.

POPSFactory farms get a pass on reporting greenhouse gas emissions
A lot of us question why Americans should care about livestock poop, particularly in the context of greenhouse gas emissions. Animal manure and livestock produce methane and nitrous oxide, which are about 23 and 300 times respectively stronger than carbon dioxide. According to the EPA GHG Inventory, manure is the 5th largest source of methane and the 4th largest source of nitrous oxide in the U.S. It results in more than twice as many emissions as waste incineration and natural gas systems in the U.S. The way in which CAFOs pool their manure is a large part of the problem. When stored in pits and lagoons as is typical on factory farms, the manure breaks down anaerobically, in the absence of oxygen, which exacerbates methane emissions. The EPA has acknowledged that when manures are distributed on pastures as would be typical in a grass-fed animal system, methane production is limited. Thus, there are proven ways to reduce methane emissions in manure management.

POPSFood of the week-- Onion
"Tips for Preparing Onions: While many people love to eat onions, most dread cutting them since this process usually brings a tear or two to the eyes. The compound that causes the eyes to burn is a phytonutrient known as allyl sulfate that is produced when sulfur-compounds released by the onion's ruptured cells are exposed to air. If cutting onions irritates your eyes, there are a few tricks that you can employ. Chill the onions for an hour or so before cutting. This will slow the activity of the enzyme that produces the allyl sulfate and is a better choice than the traditional method of cutting onion under running water. This latter process may dilute the amount of allyl sulfate, which, while it may be irritating to the eyes, is actually one of the phytonutrients most responsible for onions significant health benefits. Use a very sharp knife and always cut the onions while standing; that way your eyes will be as far away as possible. If cutting onions really makes you cry, co

POPSUnattended Death Clean Up Unattended death clean up involves a lot more then most people realize. During an unattended death clean up we make sure that everything at the scene causing odors is removed, that all biohazzardous material is cleaned up and that the waste is properly disposed of based on local state laws and requirements.

POPSWMD--Weapons of Mosquito Destruction "You can say we are very lucky -- the right place at the right time," says astrophysicist Szabolcs Márka, a Columbia University specialist in black holes. He has a grant to develop a "mosquito flashlight" designed to knock out the bugs' eye-like sensors. Scientists around the world are testing ways of thwarting mosquitoes with microwaves, rancid odors, poisoned blood and other weapons that disrupt the sense of sight, smell and heat mosquitoes use to find their prey. There's work on genetically altering a bacterium to infect and kill a mosquito, and a project to build a malaria-free mosquito genetically enhanced to overtake the natural kind. There's also a researcher in Japan who thinks mosquitoes can be a force for good. He is working on transforming them into "flying syringes" that deliver vaccines with every bite.

POPSThe family dairy The Modern dairy is once again within reach of the farming family. By taking the best of of many different systems that cut the cost and time required to do the job, and do it very efficiently with out stress on both the cows and the worker doing the milking. Manpower and hours to do the job are greatly reduced. Think green here. This is truly a stand alone system. The cow produces everything thats needed. How? Ask and we will tell you.

POPSGay men and straight women like to smell the same things So, it all comes down to which smells we prefer, eh? Of course that is a gross simplification, but it is interesting that women and gay men are aroused by the same pheromones, and straight men go for something entirely different. Hello girls!! :-)

POPSSmells -- even smells we don't notice -- affect our judgment of others Next, these same volunteers were asked to rate photos of faces for likability. Before rating a face, they took a sniff from a random unlabeled bottle (from one of the four weak solutions), and indicated whether they detected an odor. Then they saw the face and rated how likable they thought the person depicted was. So even though the odor was undetectable, did it have an affect on likability?

POPSSexy? plain? who chooses? "In women, preferences for male faces, voices, body odors and behavior change over the course of the menstrual cycle as estrogen levels rise and fall. Our work with these songbirds shows a possible neural basis for those changes" Put aside the specific hormone, what is pointed here is how much happens in the background of one's perception, that has control of what is perceived as very real.... and the 'changes' that we experience must be doubted.

POPSDecoding the sense of smell In future work, the team plans to work with researchers worldwide, including MIT's Media Lab and Department of Biology, to develop a portable microfluidic device that can identify an array of different odors. Such a device could be used in medicine for the early diagnosis of certain diseases that produce distinctive odors, such as diabetes and lung, bladder and skin cancers, Zhang said. There are also a wide range of industrial applications for such a smell-based biosensing device, he said. One application i can think of is developing an antidote for smelly things, people etc.. :)

POPS"God Punishes Reps. w/Hurricane Guztav" Dems. Concern Troll facade exposed. In Fowler's thought - expressed quite easily ~ and shared by more than a few Leftists ~ one does not know which nastiness is greater: (a)that displayed while enjoying the threat to the people of N.O because it interrupts the Reps., or (b) the show of disgust they muster when accusing the Right of that very thinking. Soooo often, when they habitually accuse another of a certain despicable pattern of thought or feeling, weeelll it is their own scent they're smelling. When a main element of the character make-up of a group is the pomp and self-aggrandizement causing them to believe their very body odors are sweeter than their counterparts, well of course they will blame them upon noticing a fowl stench rising. Thing is, it is most likely their own aroma which first wafts nostril-ward. ;-)
