Healthy Monday: Canada Joins Meatless Monday Movement
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  11-11-2009
Could this happen here in the biggest meat consuming countries in the world? Don’t we care enough about our health to cut meat out of our diets at least one day a week? Most of our health costs stem from eating red meat. Most of our food costs stem from feeding cattle. Doesn’t it make economic as well as heatlh sense to cut down on our red meat consumption? Red meat again linked to cancer risk: http://www.foodnavigator.com/Science-Nutrition/Red-meat-again-linked-to-cancer-risk-Study How to reduce your red meat consumption: http://www.causecast.org/news_items/8699-how-to-reduce-your-red-meat-consumption The growing case against red meat: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1887266,00.html

Corrupted doctors
aklimento
by aklimento  11-5-2009
When you lied once at least, who will trust you further? Striking example of our totally corrupted medicine and health care. Corrupted by whom? Who corrupt society and its institutions? How we calling those who perform the corruption and their accomplices? If these organized individuals do corrupt our society, how can we expect any benefits for our health and well being from them, their actions? Lie cannot last forever and in the end the truth will find its way out. Who will resist to make it happen?

Dispelling myths about meatless meals
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  10-30-2009
The right-wing blowhards getting their knickers in a twist over this is so amusing. Because it's indoctrination to teach kids that anything but meat for lunch is a good thing. How dare they! Like kids experiencing foregoing meat one meal a week is some sort of communist plot to weaken our children and make them susceptible to socialized medicine and nuclear disarmament or something.

Fraudulent "Smart Choices" food labeling program crumbles
katsteevns
by katsteevns  11-3-2009    1
As NaturalNews previously reported (http://www.naturalnews.com/027077_n...), the fraudulent Smart Choices food labeling program was being led by a Tufts University dean named Dr. Eileen Kennedy, a woman who continues to insist that sugary breakfast cereals made with 40% sugar, artificial coloring chemicals and partially-hydrogenated oils are really, really healthy for kids! (Eat more!) To paraphrase her view, they're smart choices because they are "better than a donut."

Sixty million years of evolution says vitamin D may save your life from swine flu
The Infowarrior

"You need vitamin D, not a vaccine Your body doesn't need a vaccine to combat the swine flu (or seasonal flu, for that matter). What it needs is vitamin D, restful sleep, adequate hydration with clean water, and good nutrition. These things make the vaccine obsolete."

Popcorn balls
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  10-27-2009
From the comments, I added one tsp. salt and 2 tsps. vanilla after the sugar mix came to a boil. Be careful because adding the vanilla will cause the sugar mixture to boil up and sputter. Also, I reduced the powdered sugar to 2 cups. It is plenty sweet. Also, keep the popcorn warm while making the sauce in a 200 degree F oven. I got 24 balls out of this and they taste FANTASTIC. Word from the comments is that the marshmallow keeps these from becoming rock hard like other popcorn balls. And, bonus, you do not need a candy thermometer. I will make again very soon. Easy and tasty.

Gary Taubes: The great diet delusion
Lexica
by Lexica  10-23-2009
More: The institutionalised conviction that we get fat simply because we overeat is based on the kind of fallacious reasoning that would lead to a failing grade in a high-school logic class. The first law of thermodynamics tells us that energy is neither created nor destroyed, so the calories we consume must be either stored, expended or excreted. If we are getting fatter, we must be taking in more energy than we are giving out: we are overeating. But this does not tell us which direction the arrow of causality is pointing. Do we get fat because we overeat, or is some regulatory or hormonal phenomenon driving us to fatten and in turn causing us to overeat? Saying that obesity is explained by overeating and/or sedentary behaviour is like saying that chronic fatigue syndrome is explained by a lack of energy. It sounds obvious; it tells us nothing.

Jeff Galloway: Food - the importance of "prefueling" before exercise
Lexica
by Lexica  10-21-2009
More: If you fear undesired pit stops or gastric distress, train your intestinal track to tolerate food. Start with one saltine, or one pretzel, and then work up to a more substantial intake… Even if you are working out for less than an hour, you should still eat a pre-run snack and drink water. Athletes who ate no breakfast, biked hard for 50 minutes and then sprinted for 10 minutes to the finish were able to sprint 6% harder when they consumed adequate water vs. minimal water… One way to organize your pre-run fueling is to eat part of the upcoming meal prior to your workout. For example— • If you run in the morning, enjoy a banana before your workout, and then afterwards refuel with the rest of your breakfast, such as a bagel and a yogurt. • If you run at lunch, eat half a sandwich before your run and then enjoy the rest of your lunch afterwards. • For afternoon or afterwork sessions, enjoy a granola bar or some graham crackers pre-run, and then refuel with chocolate m

Bill and Melinda Gates pledge 120 million to boost African, Indian farmers
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-15-2009    12
Oh noez. Corporate America, Bill Gates, is dropping 120 million to help Africa and India. So liberals, this must horrify you right? Because corporations are "evil" in your nightmares or did you confuse it with an episode of "Fringe". Moan for me libs. Moan about America and whine because Americans, Bill and Melinda Gates, just blew your mind. Where's that fatty Michael Moore-on anyway? Probably sitting in Krispy Kreme or Dominoes Pizza stuffing his fat face. I know this news isn't as important as the Christians eating fried chicken at the Baptist Church, but who could compete with a horror show like that. Waaaaahhhhhh corporations......waaaaahhhhhh Christians........wahhhhhhh Rush Limbaugh.......waaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Boohoo. Cry me a river.

Certain foods can help women of all ages stay fit, healthy

Something for the ladies. "Just as your lifestyle changes in each decade, so do your nutritional needs," said Melina B. Jampolis, M.D., an internist and author of "The Busy Person's Guide to Permanent Weight Loss." "For example, a 20-something needs to take calcium and vitamin D for strong bones, while a woman in her 40s should eat plenty of lean protein to help maintain muscle mass."

H1N1: Sorry, we don't have a line item for That.
billpar
by billpar  10-1-2009
Creating ways for healthful lifestyle habits to be the natural first choice for Americans is the goal of a $650 million initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be used to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, decrease obesity, and decrease smoking in U.S. communities. And then, on the same day Dr. Frieden was doing his best Oliver Twist before Congress: $120 Million for States Made Available as Part of Recovery Act Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative Now, the H1N1 is one of the more anticipated, slow-moving ‘pandemics’ in history. It hasn’t even really hit and it seems like old news. Surely, some of that $650 million in grants for ’healthy choices’ could have been used to, you know, actually keep people healthy.
