POPSGeographical oddities Talking of USA, it is one country that significantly increased its post-independence size through purchase of land from Russia, France, Mexico, Denmark etc. It must have made the most profitable land deal in history when it purchased Alaska from Russia at a little over 7 million dollars in 1867, which comes to about $10 per sq. mile (2 cents per acre). Just imagine that Alaska accounts for 20% of total oil production in USA, not to speak of the huge reserves of natural gas, and mineral resources like coal, gold, zinc etc. and you will appreciate the magnitude of the bargain!

POPSWatch out for the trolls, but don't take your eye off of the road Trollstigen is closed during the fall and winter months. A normal opening season stretches from the middle of May to October, but may sometimes be shorter or longer due to changes in the weather conditions, or unexpected trolls of course. In the summer of 2005 the road was repaired and about 16 million NOK was spent on protection against rockfall, making the road a lot safer to drive on....that is unless you aren't watching closely......for the trolls.....bwahahahahahaha......

Other nations, notably Norway and the United Kingdom, have been developing oil and gas offshore in harsh northern climates for decades. The production of these resources has helped maintain global energy supplies, has created thousands of jobs in those countries, and has generated tens of billions of dollars in revenue for those governments. The U.S. has long supported offshore oil and gas development in other countries. The Obama administration is even offering political and financial support for Brazil to develop its offshore oil fields.

According to collated data from the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the University of Illinois, Arctic ice extent was 30 per cent greater on August 11, 2008 than it was on the August 12, 2007. This is a conservative estimate based on the map projection." Blue pixels represent increased ice coverage over the North Pole in the year since August 2007.
