Documents Detail Historic Treasury/Bankers Meeting
merrie
by merrie  5-30-2009    1
 # "CEO Talking Points" used by former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson confirming that the nine bank CEOs present at the October 13 meeting had no choice but to accede to the government's demands for equity stakes and the resulting government control. # "Major Financial Institution Participation Commitments" signed by the nine bankers on October 13. The CEOs not only hand wrote their institution's names but also hand wrote multi-billion dollar amounts of "preferred shares" to be issued to the government. # Email documenting that, on the very day of the meeting, the Chief of Staff to the Treasury Secretary and other top Treasury staff did not know the names of any of the banks that would be in attendance. # Email showing Treasury officials wanted to use the Secret Service to help keep the press away from the CEOs arriving at the meeting. # Email showing a public relations effort, run in part out of the Bush White House, to tamp down public concerns about "nationalizing the banks."

Behind Closed Doors, Dealmakers Screw the Housing Industry
merrie
by merrie  2-13-2009    1
& The Little People Who Might Need a Home Seven-Hundred-and-Eighty-Nine BILLION DOLLARS, and there was no room for a housing credit? I’d like to know who fought to keep this credit in the final bill, and who fought to eliminate it. Names, please. UPDATE 2/11/09 @ 6:15 pm ET: To clarify, the $15,000 home-buying credit that was slashed had been included in the Senate bill , was to apply to ALL buyers with qualifying income for purchase of a new primary residence. The House bill included a $7,500 credit for first-time buyers only. I do not know the status of the House credit, but a credit for first-time buyers only will not be sufficient to stimulate some of the tougher markets because those buyers typically don’t qualify for most homes anyway.

Top 100 Sci-Fi Short Stories.

When I see a list. I know what is on the list is going to depend on who is making the list. There are some predictable ratings, but there are generally surprises. When looking at Sci-Fi fiction lists, it continues to be amazing that there are so many authors writing who were hardly recognized, but produced high quality work. Short stories are great because they can be read without like seeming like a project. They are also good for training our minds to read epics.(I've just clipped the two ends of the list.)
