POPSBible Belt Bluster North Carolina recently has had its share of negative publicity. A relatively minor brouhaha concerning a councilman who claims to be a "post-theist" has ignited a small blaze that has reached the national level. Ridicule is an excellent tool for changing perspective concerning silly laws. One wonders about the competence of the lawmakers in SC.

POPSBaucus' Girlfriend Worked on His Divorce While on His Staff Are all men pigs...or just prominent politicians and sports heroes? (no!) But gosh, I'm so amazed by the blatant infidelity that is so rampant and people dare show their faces. It's so icky. At least Sanford's wife (while giving it time) has decided to divorce him. And Tiger is leaving golf to decide if his marriage is more important than his addiction. I still remember the Time Magazine cover of the 70s (I think). "What Ever Happened to Shame?"

POPSCopenhagen climate change conference Climate change has been caused over centuries, has consequences that will endure for all time and our prospects of taming it will be determined in the next 14 days. We call on the representatives of the 192 countries gathered in Copenhagen not to hesitate, not to fall into dispute, not to blame each other but to seize opportunity from the greatest modern failure of politics. This should not be a fight between the rich world and the poor world, or between east and west. Climate change affects everyone, and must be solved by everyone.

POPSGrim fate of injured hunter trapped in well shocks Spain They gave the cause of death as gunshot wounds and police said it was clear that he had killed himself, presumably after giving up hope of being found. Police said no one would have heard his cries for help, even though the well was close to the Sol de Mallorca complex of holiday homes near the island's El Mago beach. It would have been impossible for him to clamber up the sheer-walled well with his broken limbs.

POPSThe Waste Land - San Francisco's roving recyclers
More: One man, tall and strong with sharp eyes and long dreadlocks…Mute, he pulls a scrap of paper out of his cart and starts writing… “What school?” Berkeley, I say, impressed and somewhat embarrassed that he can tell so quickly my status. “Why here?” he jots. I try to explain. “You’re not too smart,” he concludes, pointing at my thin sweater and shivering hands… Then he offers me the red down coat he is wearing and goes back to work. As I walk around the cardboard boxes that contain the recyclables…I see bits of his scribbled conversations with others. “Temper is going Everyone’s under $ pressure,” reads one…“Me, I don’t sweat the cash too much,” reads another. I return to ask for the paper on which we’d just had our conversation. He looks at me skeptically. “You’re a bad journalist,” he writes. “No tape recorder.” Then he hands over the paper and smiles. I asked for his name, but he holds his forefinger to his sealed lips, then turns and goes back to

POPSStruggling media will need government help That ought give us a free press, one that is supported by the government. Why don't the media try meeting what people want rather than their own agenda. Maybe they would get back their readers and listeners if they did.

POPS Newspaper Industry Bailout on The Way? Waxman’s “indication that government has a role to play is both bold and soberly sensible,” said Free Press Policy Director Ben Scott on the sidelines of the FTC conference. At the Federal Communications Commission, officials are embarking on a quadrennial review of the state of U.S. media. The study, which is mandated by Congress, seeks to determine whether current rules should be changed to allow for a more vibrant media industry serving a diverse audience. POPSWhat is Freedom of Press and Speech Worth? More than 80 journalists have been killed this year - it was 30 in the Philippines in one incident. Cowards, wannabe dictators, and people who want to run your life fear, persecute and kill journalists. The unfunny thing is that some "news" organizations seem to delight at inflaming people against the "media" and those who defend free speech and press. Of course they do the same with inflaming people against anyone they don't like and refuse to take responsibility when someone dies. Words and speech have power, they know it. this article demonstrates that truth.

POPSSeeing No Evil On Climate-Gate last decade’s decline in global temperatures. Even more: They conveniently lost the original data on which their house-of-cards computer modeling built the narrative of long-term global warming. On that dubious narrative was built the political momentum for history’s greatest transfer of wealth from developed to undeveloped nations. Even more: They squared and cubed their own corruption, these beneficiaries of tax-supported research money, by closing off legitimate and necessary skepticism, even fantasizing about committing violence against leading skeptics. Their purposes were political: to shape data to suit the agenda of international regulators, many of whom will meet next week in Copenhagen to propose draconian emission controls. That, by any old-school journalist’s reckoning, would constitute a scandal of global proportions, and you’d expect the terriers of the press to bare their teeth.
