POPSRed Primer for Children and Diplomats Part II by Victor Vashi Red Army invasion of Georgia The Red Army invasion of Georgia also known as the Soviet-Georgian War (February 15 – March 17, 1921) was a military campaign by the Soviet Russian (RSFSR) Red Army against the Democratic Republic of Georgia (DRG) aimed at overthrowing the local Social-Democratic (Menshevik) government and installing the Bolshevik regime in the country. The conflict was a result of expansionist policy by the Soviets, who aimed at control of the same territories which had been part of Imperial Russia until the turbulent events of World War I, as well as the revolutionary efforts of mostly Russia-based Georgian Bolshevik elite, who did not enjoy sufficient support in their native country to seize power without foreign intervention. POPSLYING FORWARDS FROM THE RIGHTWING My niece sent me this email and asked me the following... Hey Aunt C, Somebody sent this to me and I know you are fantastic at finding the truth, so is this true or some republican trying to change peoples votes. Thanks, (Niece) LINK HERE: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/taxes.asp Hi, (Niece). it is completely false... Thanks for asking... I wish that others would question this baloney the republican rightwing sends around to the naive, who mindlessly accept these stupid forwards as the truth... A sad America, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, (and the middle class continues to disappear) is the result of such irrationality... The very ones who get hurt by these forwards are the ones who would probably be helped if the wealthy, whether they be individuals or corporations were forced to pay their share of taxes, instead of getting tax breaks that the republican party keep giving them. http://thinkingblue.blogspot.com

POPSTHE ORIGIN OF BIOLOGICAL INFORMATION Yet Muller and Newman insist that population genetics, and thus evolutionary biology, has not identified a specifically causal explanation for the origin of true morphological novelty during the history of life. Central to their concern is what they see as the inadequacy of the variation of genetic traits as a source of new form and structure. They note, following Darwin himself, that the sources of new form and structure must precede the action of natural selection (2003:3)–that selection must act on what already exists. Yet, in their view, the “genocentricity” and “incrementalism” of the neo-Darwinian mechanism has meant that an adequate source of new form and structure has yet to be identified by theoretical biologists. Instead, Muller and Newman see the need to identify epigenetic sources of morphological innovation during the evolution of life. In the meantime, however, they insist neo-Darwinism lacks any “theory of the generative”

POPSComplex decision? Don't sleep on it Since its publication two years ago by a Dutch research team in the journal Science, the earlier finding had been used to encourage decision-makers to make "snap" decisions (for example, in the best-selling book Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell) or to leave complex choices to the powers of unconscious thought ("Sleep on it", Dijksterhuis et al., Science, 2006). But in the new study, to be published in The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, scientists ran four experiments in which participants were presented with complex decisions and asked to choose the best option immediately ("blink"), after a period of conscious deliberation ("think"), or after a period of distraction ("sleep on it"), which is claimed to encourage "unconscious thought processes". In all experiments, there was some evidence that conscious deliberation can lead to better choices and little evidence for superiority of choices made "unconsciously".

POPSJohn McCain is in New Jersey Today. Half of NJ's National Guard Isn't
When John McCain is in New Jersey today, we urge him to address the thousands of families that have been affected by this deployment and describe the relief he would provide them as President. In addition, VFA had been repeatedly contacted by NJ Guard members and other servicemembers from New Jersey who want to know Senator McCain's position on compensating members of our armed forces who have been stop-lossed. Recently, Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey introduced a bill calling for compensation to provided to those who affected by this regrettable policy. VFA calls on Senator McCain to clearly state if he supports Senator Lautenberg's "Stop Loss Compensation Act." Our servicemembers deserve answers, especially after considerable questions were raised regarding Senator McCain's support for our troops' well being when he opposed the successful effort to expand the GI Bill, as called for in a bill that Senator Lautenberg also co-sponsored.

POPSThe Boogey Man is Gonna Get Ya! According to the review of this new book it seems the author is rehashing the same old discounted arguments over what he dubs the "New Atheism". Using fear and misdirection it seems once again to be a weak attempt to defend the indefensible by a christian apologist.

POPSShakespeare playhouse uncovered in Shoreditch Jo Lyon, senior archaeologist at the Museum of London, said: "It's extremely exciting to be so close to the known location of The Theatre and then find remains that look to be associated with it. "As well as allowing us to walk in the footsteps of Shakespeare himself, the remains help us to start uncovering one of London's enduring secrets. "We can now start to work on the detail of what the building here might have looked like, and expand our knowledge of the playhouses of Elizabethan London." The remains were uncovered during construction of a new home for the Tower Theatre Company. It is hoped they can be preserved on the site. Museum of London Director Jack Lohman said: "The finds at New Inn Broadway offer a tantalising glimpse into Shakespeare's city, and the proposed theatre development on this special site seems a fitting way to harness the energy and spirit of a place that is so central to the story of London and Londoners."

POPSNew Gear to Boost Space Station Population The station's new Water Reclamation System, a refrigerator-sized filtration and recycler unit, is designed to ease that shuttle dependence and help make larger crews more self-sufficient. It is scheduled to launch alongside the new toilet and phone booth-sized sleeping chambers in November aboard NASA's shuttle Endeavour, which will also ferry NASA astronaut Sandra Magnus to the station to join its Expedition 18 crew. 'By getting the crew quarters deployed, we'll have extra bedrooms,' Magnus said. The station's Russian Zvezda service module currently contains the station's main crew quarters.

POPSMcCain still mocks tire-inflation efficiency "In fact, as Time reported the other day, it could actually be better than new drilling -- if everyone did it we'd consume three percent less fuel, while drilling would only meet one percent of our needs." And as you know, Senator, Obama never claimed it was an energy policy; he was pointing out that drilling produces an increase so small we could beat it for free. This all ya got? Misleading zingers? Policies so limp that freebies can do better?

POPSPortrait of Woman Revealed Beneath Van Gogh Painting "Patch of Grass" was painted by van Gogh in Paris in 1887 and is owned by the Kröller-Müller Museum. The reconstruction enables art historians to understand the evolution of van Gogh’s work better, the researchers said in a statement. POPSNew Sanctions Levelled at Iran Back to playing Bad Cop again, after the fake Good Cop "diplomacy". This is exactly the pattern of ramping up war with Iraq. Same game. Americans should know better by now, and see right through it. Note the role of the UN in this leverage, the gang of nations that rule the world (all which possess WMD) dictate to the world and forbid others to have even nuclear power as well as arms. Global tyranny at work.

POPSIran Warns of its Capabilities of Self Defense "Attack us and we will shut down the gulf which is what controls the flow of oil to the West". That summarizes the story behind this very slanted and propaganda-driven news article from the "liberal UK media", which states everything in such a manner as to suggest this as an offensive, instead of defensive, measure. So the US goads the UN into new economic sanctions in the game to eventually go to war, and Iran seeing this clearly warns of the consequences that attacking Iran will be no cake walk. Iran has missile systems to take out battle ships. The chess game continues, and war and oil prices (effecting all Americans daily lives) hang in the balance.

POPSDo economists need brains? For the past four years, a group of leading neuroeconomists and neuroscientists has met to refine questions about the brain and economic behaviour. Researchers trained in both neuroscience and economics are entering the field. Daniel Kahneman, a Princeton University psychologist who in 2002 won the Nobel prize in economics for his contribution to behavioural economics, is an enthusiastic supporter of the new field. “In many areas of economics, it will dominate, because it works,” says Mr Kahneman. Interesting read...

POPSJust Walk Away... It is impossible to know for sure how many of the people who are now walking away from their homes could have gone on paying their mortgages. But Professor Nouriel Roubini of New York University, one of the first economists to warn of the dangers of the American house price boom, believes the number of people positively choosing to walk away is growing rapidly. "This is becoming a tsunami of voluntary defaults," Professor Roubini says. "The losses for the financial system from people walking away could be of the order of one trillion dollars when the entire capital of the US banking system is only $1.3 trillion. "You could have most of the US banking system wiped out, so this is a total disaster."
