John Lennon's killer gives new details of shooting
pussycatdoll
by pussycatdoll  Today 12:01 AM
Chapman also said he felt ashamed and sorry for killing Lennon. He has spent almost 28 years in Attica prison in New York. Ono, who has previously written to the parole board opposing Chapman's release, did not offer any testimony at his fifth and latest and fifth parole hearing on August 12. Chapman said he had a job offer on a farm in upstate New York. However his request for parole was rejected "due to concern for the public safety and welfare". His next hearing will be in August 2010.

Mayor Bloomberg advocating alternative energy for NYC
egoldstein
by egoldstein  Yesterday 10:11 PM    3
This is an example of the forward thinking, innovative leadership that Mayor Bloomberg has provided to New York City. I'm certainly a fan of term limits, but this is one person i sure hate to see move on...although i would love to see him be a major player in the next president's cabinet. I imagine that if Obama wins, that is a very real possibility.

Vladimir Putin Dictator for Life.
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  Yesterday 2:01 AM
The word "democracy" may be preserved as a nod to world opinion, but the weight falls entirely on the adjective, "sovereign," which in this case is clearly a euphemism for "we'll do things our own way, and don't butt in." As prime minister Putin controls Russia's government. His new job gives him sweeping powers over the Duma, Russia's lower house, where United Russia has 315 out of 450 seats, as well as over regional legislatures, also dominated by the party. Analysts say Putin's longterm strategy is to return as president in 2012, and by becoming party chairman, Putin has made himself virtually unsackable.

Which Hindsight Is 20-20?
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-18-2008
Hindsight isn't always 20-20, particularly in wartime, when early expectations of an easy rout can give way to an unexpectedly long and bloody grind - and when victory has so often been achieved only after persevering through strategic debacles, intelligence failures, and wrenching battlefield losses.

Windy NIMBY
Joshua Zumbrun
by Joshua Zumbrun  8-18-2008
An intriguing story about the wind energy industry in upstate New York. Now, corruption, if it's happening, is a legitimate concern. And I can see how a constant humming would be annoying. Vertigo, etc. But I'm not sure I understand the "destroys scenic views" complaint. I mean, windmills look really cool.

New British Army Division?
notareargunner
by notareargunner  8-17-2008
Does this mean that the WWI tactics employed by HM Army are now sanctioned as viable? Observers tell of the lack of training through the lack of monies spent on live firing and field crafts. The deafeningly silent commentaries at some of the real documentaries presently filling TV around the country, says more for former soldiers wish not to put harm in the way of serving personnel, than it does for the politicians who send brave British youngsters to their deaths. There are commentators who eulogise over young people who, in three short years, gain a wealth of experience of service life fighting in foreign lands. France and America turn out sergeants within this period, and in some extreme case so do the British Army. On News bulletins currently facing the public, one look tell you the Soviet/Russian Bear has learned one factor for Britain. The majority of the soldiers occupying Georgia are trained and experienced veterans. It is the experience of 22 year sergeants that binds t

The Extreme-Right Way To Make A Buck
debbyski
by debbyski  8-16-2008    6
"Actually, it's a little darker than that. Corsi doesn't just belong to the right's conspiratorial wing, he belongs to its racist, white-supremacist fringe. Over the last couple of years, he's written disparagingly about Muslims, Catholics and Jews, not to mention gays and lesbians. Muslims are "ragheads," the pope is "senile" and tolerates "boy bumping," and Jews ... well, you can imagine. The fact of the matter is, though, that Corsi doesn't so much aspire to participate as he does to profit. n former years, Americans' ideology was influenced by their participation in the economy. To put it crudely, businesspeople tended to find a home in the Republican Party, working men and women in the Democratic Party. Today, we have a new class, one to which Corsi and his ilk belong, whose business is their ideology."

Afghan Militants Butcher American Soldiers
cptenaud
by cptenaud  8-15-2008    3
I didn't say anything about it here or elsewhere because a.) I didn't know what the families knew, and b.) I couldn't confirm it with anyone else. As for the soldiers being alive when captured, I still don't know with certainty whether or not that's true or just battlefield rumor. But everything else my source told me has turned out to be correct. The New York Times explains in more detail: The three were identified as Sgt. First Class Matthew L. Hilton, 37, of Livonia, Mich., of the Michigan Army National Guard; and Sgt. First Class Joseph A. McKay, 51, of Brooklyn; and Specialist Mark C. Palmateer, 38, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., both of them part of a reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition unit of the New York Army National Guard, according to a Pentagon news release. Their Afghan interpreter was 21-year-old Muhammad Fahim from Kabul, who had been working with the Americans for the last three years. His body was burned beyond recognition, his family said.

"You Furnish the Pictures and I'll Furnish the War"
sahara
by sahara  8-14-2008
Both repeatedly called for armed intervention, then later, all-out war. The atrocities General Weyler committed in Cuba were massively hyped and sensationalized in the US newspapers, then engaged in a practice known as "yellow journalism". The two kingpins of the press at the time were William R. Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, who were embroiled in a vicious circulation war, in which Hearst even "stole" Pulitzer's most popular writers by convincing them to defect through promises of money and positions. Hearst's major publication was the New York Journal and Pulitzer's publication was the New York World. In order to grow their circulations, both men were willing to go so far as to make up stories. The Spanish-American War was not the height of Hearst's power. Afterwards, he continued to grow his media empire for several decades, and even successfully ran for a seat in Congress. Hearst was the rough basis for the wealthy journalist-baron in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.

Hot Destination: Lagos, Nigeria
Rebecca Ruiz
by Rebecca Ruiz  8-14-2008    1
I haven't read much about travel to Nigeria, save George Packer's great article in the New Yorker (see here: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/11/13/061113fa_fact_packer) about the city's informal economies. A New York Times reporter recently surveyed the city's nightlife, malls and substandard housing and found a huge gap between the wealthy and poor. I think it will be awhile before it becomes a real destination, but it should be interesting to see how travel there increases in the coming years.

Story By Sewell Chan "The city’s Summer Streets program will have its debut Saturday morning. The Bloomberg administration plans to bar motor vehicles from a 6.9-mile north-south route in Manhattan for six hours each on three consecutive Saturdays. In an interview this morning with Fox 5, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg expressed hope " "The advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, which has become increasingly influential in shaping the Bloomberg administration’s transportation policy, will provide escorted bike rides to Summer Streets tomorrow from Astoria, Queens, and Bedford-Stuyvesant and Park Slope, in Brooklyn."
