Service and Homecoming With PTSD: A Vet's Story
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  Yesterday 8:12 PM
This article is worth reading in its entirety. The honesty and vulnerability of the author is most unusual and insightful. More from the article below: " I want everyone to know that I appreciate all the support our country has given the troops. I received packages in Iraq from schools, Boy and Girl Scout troops, Rotary Clubs and other volunteer groups. I really appreciated all the effort and time that went into trying to make our lives there a little bit better. So for all the problems I have, feeling supported is not one of them and I want to thank you all for your support. Just understand that none of us came back the same as when we left."

Massive Anti-War Protest*** March 10, 2010***
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-28-2009    2
Plan to attend or organize your own in solidarity. Individual protests are fine, but when we come together and walk our talk, we force authority to pay attention. If we maintain our focus and momentum, together we can bring OUR government to heel Will there be threats and resistance and backlash from the Military-Industrial Complex Machine? You betcherass there will. So. Be prepared. Make sure your friends and relatives support and watch out for you in case of arrest. People cannot be disappeared when they have support from their community. Are you willing, but don't have the bucks? Get your friends and neighbors to chip in and send you as their representative. Solidarity, remember? Maybe your community can send a group to represent them, as an investment in taking back our voice in the government. It's time, people!

The Holiday Gift This Country Needs
debbyski
by debbyski  12-24-2009    4
"We also need to invest in our infrastructure, and not just the obvious physical things like our old bridges and trains but more importantly our human infrastructure. We must continue to push for "Medicare Part E - Everybody" - so we can rebuild the social safety net to encourage entrepreneurialism - and along those lines let's fix the bankruptcy bill, and strengthen social security. Finally, we need to think of work differently. Lincoln once said that labor is superior to capital because it precedes it. Nobody gets rich until somebody makes something. We once had an economy that valued laborers - the true producers of wealth - and the middle class. You know. almost everything on this gift list was, in their day, enthusiastically endorsed by Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower. And Barry Goldwater. And Richard Nixon. Somehow this country went insane in 1981 when Reagan took power and declared that "greed was good" and America was to be reinvented."

I Can Find A More Worthy Charity
debbyski
by debbyski  12-21-2009    2
"But think about those numbers, think about the power of the Salvation Army. It is a massive Christian evangelical organization — with a quasi-military structure and raising $2 billion a year — and it promotes discrimination against gays and lesbians in its employment policy; at local levels of government, going so far as to threaten to close soup kitchens in New York if the city enacted domestic partnership legislation; and at the national level of government, including negotiating with the Bush administration to guarantee that faith-based groups could discriminate against gays and keep their federal funding. We can find charities more deserving of our dollars and our volunteer time."

First Jesus-era house discovered in Nazareth
kareval
by kareval  12-21-2009    3
The archaeological find shows how different it was 2000 years ago: There were no Christians or Muslims, the Jewish Temple stood in Jerusalem and tiny Nazareth stood near a battleground between Roman rulers and Jewish guerrillas. The Jews of Nazareth dug camouflaged grottos to hide from Roman invaders, said archaeologist Yardena Alexandre, excavations director at the Israel Antiquities Authority. But the hamlet was so far off the beaten path that the caves were apparently not needed, she said. Based on clay and chalk shards found at the site, the dwelling appeared to house a "simple Jewish family," Alexandre added, as workers carefully chipped away at mud with small pickaxes to reveal stone walls. "This may well have been a place that Jesus and his contemporaries were familiar with," Alexandre said. A young Jesus may have played around the house with his cousins and friends. "It's a logical suggestion." The discovery so close to Christmas pleased local Christians.

Nothing like several feet of snow at a conference where the impotent choir boys are screaming about their warming globes. Looking forward to another global gerbil warming warning paper from the scientists. Maybe it will coincide with next years' Earth Day misery meeting. "-- It's About the What Kind of People We Want to Be " Note to Liberals: There are actual big problems that could use solving, like Iran getting nukes and keeping the Taliban from taking over in Afghanistan. If that’s too big for you, you can warm your globes on your own time with your own money. I know things that don’t result in a bigger government pushing people around don’t tend to interest you, but give it your consideration, please.

Abortion Legalized In Spain
cici-ristic
by cici-ristic  12-20-2009    1
Abortion was nevertheless widely available because women can assert mental distress as the sole ground for accessing the procedure, regardless of the progress of the pregnancy. More than 100,000 abortions are conducted in Spain each year, and most of them are early-term procedures that fell under the mental distress category. This bill, however, is important, because it erases the threat of jail time and declares abortion to be a woman's right. This is important, because in the past there have been serious consequences for women, doctors and clinics.

New York’s Largest Mosque to Be Built Next To –- Ground Zero

The building has no sign that hints at its use as a Muslim prayer space, but these modest beginnings point to a far grander vision: an Islamic center near the city’s most hallowed piece of land that would stand as one of ground zero’s more unexpected and striking neighbors. Unreal. Lest We Forget I’m a history buff. There’s a constant struggle at our house over the remote control and whether we watch what my wife and kids want, or the Discovery, TLC, or the History Channel. I won’t go into who usually wins (ask Pam), but suffice it to say we’ve added several televisions in the house. My mom instilled in me my fascination with history long ago. I think it was her way of passing onto a son, growing up ten thousand miles away from his country and family, his heritage. Around the dinner table in the Philippines her stories of my grandparents and life on the farm during the Depression and World War 2 .....

And it is coming soon to the rest of the country, the national plan seems to be at least partially based on Michigan's failed course. As the confiscation of the wealthy's assets and businesses continue, those that have anything left, will LEAVE. Many other countries would be HAPPY to take a much smaller share of the pie. Which is what is happening in Michigan. 100% of nothing is nothing, and that is what we get when we tax jobs out of existence.

More than a year later, the Obama bumper stickers and signs have all but disappeared. The economic disaster, endemic to any Socialist strategy -- and especially that of Alinsky's acolyte -- is apparent to all but the most obtuse observer. Doug Ross http://bit.ly/78k5Rq

Cut Military Spending in Half
sahara
by sahara  11-29-2009    1
By Benjamin H. Friedman, a research fellow in defense and homeland security studies at the Cato Institute and a PhD candidate in political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From comment at the site: ... From 2000 to 2008, Texas defense contactors raked in $255 billion, according to federal data compiled by governmentcontractswon.com ... but 2008 yielded the highest profits of the decade. Halliburton, the Houston-based oil-field services company once headed by Dick Cheney, has been the state’s most notorious war profiteer. KBR, formerly a subsidiary of Halliburton and also headquartered in Houston, is the U.S. Army’s largest construction and contracting group in Iraq and Afghanistan. Aerospace giants clustered in the Dallas-Fort Worth area—Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, CSC Technologies and DynCorp, to name a few—have also swept in huge defense contracts to produce military aircraft, conventional missiles and military satellites.

Obama's Judenfrei Policies
merrie
by merrie  11-28-2009    1
What has since resulted from Obama's ill-informed, grandiose pronouncements is Abbas threatening to quit due to Obama's failure to achieve a settlement freeze, Palestinians contemplating a unilateral declaration of an independent state with U.N. backing, and the likely hardening of positions on both sides of the conflict. It looked like the administration had awoken to reality when, for a brief period of time, it began to ease up on previous statements. However, this week, Obama made it perfectly clear where he stands on this completely misguided position. In an interview with Fox News, Obama condemned the construction of nine hundred new apartment units in Jerusalem, stating: I think additional settlement building does not contribute to Israel’s security. I think it makes it harder for them to make peace with their neighbors. I think it embitters the Palestinians in a way that could end up being very dangerous.

Richard Tisei, Openly Gay Republican, Picked As GOP Gubernatorial Candidate's ...
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  11-23-2009    4
This doesn't surprise me in the least. Sometimes, when I talk to gay activists or “politically aware” gay people who support the various left-leaning national gay organizations about the Republican Party, they act as if the party was dedicated to the proposition that anti-gay attitudes are integral to the GOP. Yet, if they would spend the amount of time they spend decrying and moaning about the GOP on learning about the history of American conservatism, they might realize that the real animating principle of their movement is freedom. Homosexuality is, at most, incidental to conservative ideology–and we gay conservatives have long been working to make it a non-issue. Some may say, “Well, you support the GOP and Republicans are no better, perhaps even worse. And I’ll reply, yep, you’ve got a point, they aren't perfect, but the GOP doesn't treat our community like a cash cow, milking it when they need funds and hiding it in the barn when they fear it might offend the neighbors.

"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. In reminding his fellow Americans that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, President Roosevelt sought to make us less vulnerable to our enemies, not more like them."
