Got A Pet Tarantula - Know It's Defence Mechanism
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  Yesterday 5:13 AM
"The authors say: "The Chilean Rose tarantula has urticating hairs over the posterior aspect of its body. As a defence mechanism against potential predators, the tarantula will rub its hind legs against its abdomen to dislodge these hairs into the air. Multiple barbs allow the hairs to migrate through ocular tissue as well as other surfaces. The inflammatory reaction observed is termed ophthalmia nodosa; a broad diagnosis covering the response of the eye to insect or vegetable material.""

Tea Parties: The Biggest Mistake We Could Make in 2010
billpar
by billpar  12-30-2009    3
We have a branding problem, at the least, and need to define ourselves outside of the DC Network. If we must have TWO political parties may I humble suggest we name the Dems and Rinos (no difference) as the "Politician Party" and the Tea Partiers, Independents, and libertarians as the "Patriot Party" and then let's rumble. The Tea Party movement in and of itself will be ineffective if it is used as a third party. However, it can be effective at driving the Republican Party more conservative, mobilizing the conservative base and holding elected officals to their more conservative promises.

..... and Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s website announced that the wartime prime minister’s nephew was one of those who had been killed. Seyyed Ali Habibi Mousavi Khamene, Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s nephew was shot by a bullet yesterday near Azadi avenue and passed away after being taken to Ibn-Sina hospital. Mehdi Farhadinia, Mohammad Ali Rasekhinia, Amir Arshadi and Shahram Faraji were the other four dead protesters. Officials prevented the bodies of these martyrs from being delivered to their families. One source close to Mir-Hossein Mousavi told Rooz that despite the presence of Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Ali Habibi Mousavi’s parents at Ibn-Sina hospital, Ali Habibi Musavi Khamene’s body was not given to his family but was instead delivered to the coroner’s office. After news of the death of Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s nephew broke out, a large number of people marched toward the hospital. A Rooz correspondent reported in front of the hospital that from about ten thirty pm .....

The US Military Is Exhausted
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-28-2009    21
These troops refuse deployment for a variety of reasons: some because they ethically oppose the wars, some because they have had a negative experience with the military, and some because they cannot psychologically survive another deployment, having fallen victim to what has been termed "Broken Joe" syndrome. The voices of refusal coming from within the US military send a powerful message that soldiers will not be fodder for an unjust and unnecessary war. And the longer the war in Afghanistan drags on - the more lives that are lost and destroyed - the more resistance we will see coming from within the ranks.

Death Toll Rises to 10 as Clashes in Iran Intensify
merrie
by merrie  12-28-2009    1
of the protests so far. The Shah’s forces never fired on protesters during Ashura, wary of violating the day’s sanctity. Obama Silent as Iranians Die for Freedom Iranian youth no longer chant “death to America.” Now they shout “death to the dictators” as they trample photos of Iran’s Supreme Leader. They also chant “Obama are you with us or with them ?” The reaction from the White House to the latest violence and the calls for recognition of the freedom movement? Silence. Once again, Obama doesn’t want to rock the boat with his hopes for a deal with the mad Mullahs who hold the Iranian people hostage to their warped ideology. Why won’t Obama adopt Reagan’s successful Cold War winning strategy? Because he was raised by a cadre of leftists who despised Reagan and resented the application of U.S. power especially when it was aimed at the Soviet Union with which many of Obama’s mentors and family had great sympathy.

If the last paragraph I excerpted pans out into more than "scattered reports," then the theocracy will be on its last legs. Fraternization of the forces of order with the people they're supposed to be putting in order has been the death-knell of regimes from that of Louis XV to Czar Nicholas II to East Germany (1989).

GOP'S NEW PRAYER GURU
debbyski
by debbyski  12-22-2009    1
"Engle's role as leader of TheCall has now received some mainstream media notice but the source of his influence is still largely unknown. Lou Engle serves, alongside Sarah Palin's prayer group leader Mary Glazier, on the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders, one of the key leadership groups wielding influence over a sprawling, global new incarnation of the religious right known as the New Apostolic Reformation. Peter Wagner was advisor for Rick Warren's dissertation for a Doctorate of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. In a mid-December statement from Rick Warren, Letter To Uganda's Pastors, Rick Warren lied about his connection to Wagner."

No Matter How Deep The Tinsel Gets
debbyski
by debbyski  12-21-2009    2
"Their passion notwithstanding, they're no match for a $450-billion marketing juggernaut whose seasonal tally helps determine the course of our national economy. Don't get me wrong; I'd never discourage the purists from raising their questions. After all, contention itself confers importance on an issue in America. And the paradox inherent in modern Christmases is worth grappling with. The very fact that the battle to save Christmas is joined year in and year out -- and has been since we started down the gift-giving, Black Friday, mallification path of excess -- seals the deal. If the tension lives, the true meaning of Christmas does too, no matter how deep the tinsel gets. And that ought to give everyone at least a little comfort and joy."

From Global Warming Believer To Skeptic
merrie
by merrie  12-22-2009    1
Climategate jolted me into confronting the massive fraud and deception by top global warming scientists, who were in a position to twist the peer-review process in their favor, and did so shamelessly. Yet still most media reports desperately minimize Climategate, saying that it doesn’t taint the massive research supporting global warming theory. To them I say, how do you know that? Have you investigated how much of that research was published due to the manipulation of these unethical and fraudulent scientists? Do you know how much research that goes against the global warming activist claims was unfairly suppressed? Until all this is known, it’s not possible to say with any confidence how much of global warming theory will remain after all the fraud and deceit has been removed. And until climate science is cleaned up, it doesn’t deserve the worship so many in the media unthinkingly give its tainted practitioners.

All Hail Lord Mockton Leading Climate Change Denier and Advocate of Incarcerating AIDS Carriers
zizzy
by zizzy  12-16-2009    2
Global warming is not the first topic that Monckton has taken extreme positions on. He created an uproar in his 1987 article for The American Spectator when he wrote, "There is only one way to stop AIDS. That is to screen the entire population regularly and to quarantine all carriers of the disease for life. Every member of the population should be blood-tested every month ... all those found to be infected with the virus, even if only as carriers, should be isolated compulsorily, immediately, and permanently." This would have included 1.5-3 million Americans at the time.
