POPSGreat Whites Hang Out in 'Shark Cafe' It had long been assumed shark species at the top of the ocean food chain that roam the high seas looking for food and mates did so almost randomly. But using satellite tagging, acoustic monitoring of shark "hot spots" and genetic samples, a research team led by Professor Barbara Block of Stanford University found to their surprise that the eastern Pacific's great whites are real homebodies. Over an eight year period, nearly 100 sharks were electronically tagged, and even more had tissue samples taken by scientists working from a ship. Sticking to a schedule They found that the sharks consistently migrate along the same paths and stick to a schedule. Between August and December, the great whites, which can grow up to six metres and weigh three tonnes, stalk waters off the coast of central and northern California, feasting on seals and sea lions. Their preferred hunting grounds in this area are known as the "red triangle", notes the study.

I wanted to combine the serious business of stopping crime with the incentive of winning money. Users will be awarded one point for spotting a suspected crime and three if they see an actual crime. They can also lose points if the camera operator decides that the alert was not a crime.

POPS...2.3 gigapixel(s)... in real time!
Everyone knows that technology changes quickly. And most people have an adequate understanding of velocity and acceleration. So I'm always surprised when people ask about the next "new technology". After all, it's relatively easy to derive the "rate of change" in a technology's "position", over time and then compute its velocity and ecceleration. The attached article provides more than enough data that can be compared to the specifications of older equipment like the cameras used on the SR-71 "Blackbird" ("U2"). These two sets of data points can be used for a quick an dirty "linear" model. What is more interesting, however, is to acquire a few more intermediate data points and to then refine the "straight line" model's "rates of change". Anyone that wants an effective "shortcut" can simply use Moore's Law (capability doubles every 18 months) with the banker's "rule of 72" (72 divided by the annual rate = time to double). An even better approach is to go to any sales conv

POPSAre kids under 13 watching YouTube? You bet they are, and by a wide margin over the leading childrens content providers. So should YouTube do more to protect kids? Perhaps. But as this article suggests, there are many positives as well. For me, its come down to diligently monitoring my kids web time and placing the computer in our kitchen; its provided both web safety teaching moments as well as some great family bonding.

POPSAntarctic Ice Growing, Not Shrinking How hard do you suppose the media will work to discredit this report? Perhaps it will simply be ignored? No... I suspect it will be discredited by the end of the day. There's no way the media can let this one slide. Hmm, lets see... even though the story didn't originate with Fox, it was picked up by Fox... Yup... I'm certain that will be enough "evidence" to cast doubt on these facts.

POPSEU Funding 'Orwellian' Plan to Monitor Public for "Abnormal Behaviour" Profiling whole populations instead of monitoring individual suspects is a sinister step in any society. "It's dangerous enough at national level, but on a Europe-wide scale the idea becomes positively chilling." Open Europe believes intelligence gathered by Indect and other such systems could be used by a little-known body, the EU Joint Situation Centre (SitCen), which it claims is "effectively the beginning of an EU secret service". Critics have said it could develop into "Europe's CIA".

POPSBoston launches flu shot tracking
Infectious disease specialists in Boston and elsewhere predicted that the registry approach could prove even more useful if something more sinister strikes: a bioterrorism attack or the long-feared arrival of a global flu epidemic. In such crises, the registry could be used to track who received a special vaccine or antidote to a deadly germ. "Anything you can do to better pinpoint who's vaccinated and who's not, that's absolutely vital," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy at the University of Minnesota. "I wish more cities were doing this kind of thing." Boston is believed to be the first city to embrace this particular approach to tracking vaccinations against the seasonal flu, estimated to kill 36,000 people each year in the United States, principally the elderly. But when Boston bought the monitoring system from a Milwaukee company in 2006, emergency authorities had a far different use in mind: tracking people injured in

POPSFeds seek about a dozen people in terror investigation

POPSCOERCIVE CARE: Real Concerns About the Health Care Bill, The Tyranny of Good Intentions
The health care bill is all about Federal control over every "free" American. Insurance would be mandatory and compulsory and the government gives you "options" through coercion, including the IRS leaning on you ("penalty") if you try to "opt out" and retain your basic human rights, i.e. private property (how you spend your own money), control of your body, and freedom of choice. Then your entire privacy is jeapordized as the Federal government becomes your legal guardian and Nanny, supervising, monitoring, and tracking (in real electronic time) every health procedure and examination of every minutia of your life. So much for "freedom" then. Moreover, information is power, and this personal information on you provides the government the means of coercing you into what Big Brother thinks is "in your best interest", i.e. really the interest of the Collectivist State. A Healthcare National ID card has been discussed. The principle is nothing other than Communism.
