POPSThe Downside of Optimism in comparison, extreme optimists: * Work significantly fewer hours * Hold a higher proportion of individual stocks in their portfolios * Are more likely to be day traders * Save less money * Are less likely to pay off their credit card balances on a regular basis * Are more likely to smoke “The differences between optimists and extreme optimists are remarkable and suggest that over-optimism, like overconfidence, may in fact lead to behaviors that are unwise,” Puri said.

POPSBlogger: No good online discussion without moderation Something to consider when we talk about civility and free speech on Clipmarks. I suspect Teresa is right when she says you need moderators for good online discussion. One other thing from her moderating guidelines : There’s no more useless advice than to tell people to just ignore such things. We can’t. We automatically read what falls under our eyes.

POPSIs Sex Necessary? Cool article... like some of the benefits of sex/masturbation: - Improved sense of smell - Reduced risk of heart disease - Weight loss, overall fitness - Reduced depression - Pain-relief - Less-frequent colds and flu - Better bladder control - Better teeth - A happier prostate? PS.. since this is health-based, I didn't feel it needed to be rated

POPSYou Can't Have A Picnic Without Ants. “Don’t feed the troll” Simple and surefire rule. Trolls feed on your reactions. Ignore them. Put comments under moderation. This way you can approve or disapprove of inappropriate comments. Don’t be overly sensitive just because they go against what you stood for. Debate is healthy. Ban them. If you have persistent trolls, you might just want to block them. This way they will not be able to wreck havoc as they please. If you remove a post, aren't you preventing free speech? Discussion boards are by design a forum for open communication, a place where the community is encouraged to freely discuss its opinions. Only remove troll posts when they become disruptive to open communication. A troll is actually silencing the voice of a majority of the community members. Ask the troll to take their comments elsewhere.

POPSWhen Fox News hackers attack! This is, of course, from the same network that won the right in court to lie to its audience. No wonder they don't like the Internet, it makes them look stupid!

POPSMore rights for Pakistani women
Women's rights in Pakistan will not be realised until particular Islamic laws and codes are scrapped. This include laws allowing the marriage of girls under sixteen, making a women's testimony equal to half of a man's, excluding female testimony in Hudood cases, and allowing family members to kill women in the name of honour without any fear of criminal penalty. Pakistan may look from outside very progressive in terms of women's rights, especially when one remembers Benazir Bhutto, something not even the United States has managed to accomplish. It is true that women are guaranteed one-third of the seats in national and local-level assemblies and are represented in the cabinet. It is also true that their participation in the labour force is remarkably large with many women holding university degrees and occupying high posts in both public and private institutions, including the army. But this only applies to urban centres, where literacy rates are high and the economy is booming.

POPSClipmarks: NO REASON AT ALL NEEDED TO DELETE COMMENTS This was the thread that led to my asking Clipmarks for clarification on their comment deletion policy. It's official. {{Antara}}, and any clipper, is allowed to delete any comment on clips they initiate, for any reason or none at all. I personally maintain a "No personal attacks against other clippers" policy as my only reason for censoring comments. But if I just don't like you, your politics, your hair-color, your religion, your ethnicity, sexual orientation, your city of birth, the facts you offer... I can delete your comments, no consequences. The deletion pop-up reads Please only remove comments that appear to be spam or that you believe to be unquestionably outside the bounds of civility. But that's only a suggestion. I think this will lead to less discussion and a even more negativity and hostility between clippers, and I do hope Clipmarks reconsiders.

POPSAAbuse of moderation privileges? Seems not [SEE COMMENTS] Antara disemvoweled my comment on her clip because she disagreed with my assertion of the facts. That's abusive and, I believe, against clipmarks policy/terms of use. I disemvowel comments that descend into personal attack, no matter whom. That's been my stated standard from when I started & I've stuck to it.. {{Antara}}, I call your actions dishonest and accuse you of being unwilling to engage in serious debate. Your excuse was I deem this one whiny, dumb but mostly just condescending nonsense ---so you win a vowel free post too! I stated the facts about HLG's arrest, his providing ID, and the racist history of the word "uppity" in America. I didn't make any personal attacks, and I defy you to point to specifically how my comment was "abusive". I call bullshit. I've written to Clipmarks to complain . 7/24/09: CLIPMARKS HAS RESPONDED. See comments.

POPSLanny Davis: "We were wrong" Thank You, Lannie. It is great to see there are still stand-up people on the left. From article: "Maybe another democracy, however imperfect, other than Israel in the Middle East could lead to more moderation, possibly other democracies? Democracies that could serve as bulwarks against al Qaeda-type of terrorist states?" "And then in early 2007 came the Surge, which so many of us in the anti-war left of the Democratic Party predicted would be a failure, throwing good men and women and billions of dollars after futility. We were wrong." "The surge did, in fact, lead to a reduction of violence, confirmed by media on the ground as well as our military leaders."

POPSIs Israel doing more damage to it's own interests than Hamas? This raises a question that every Israeli and its supporters now needs to ask. What is the strategic purpose behind the present fighting? After two weeks of combat Olmert, Livni, and Barak have still not said a word that indicates that Israel will gain strategic or grand strategic benefits, or tactical benefits... In fact, their silence raises haunting questions about whether they will repeat the same massive failures made ... during the Israeli-Hezbollah War in 2006. Has Israel somehow blundered into a steadily escalating war without a clear strategic goal or at least one it can credibly achieve? Will Israel end in empowering an enemy in political terms that it defeated in tactical terms? Will Israel’s actions seriously damage the US position in the region, any hope of peace, as well as moderate Arab regimes and voices in the process? To blunt, the answer so far seems to be yes.

POPSEvidence of Abject Delusion The truther petition was the least of it all. You have the mind of a warped Hate-monger with no passion for the truth in Masbury. Driven by vitriolic division and party politics, blatantly lacking any moderation in his contempt for the decent.

POPSTruly Understanding Martin Luther King Jr. I love Sarah Vowell. Not because I'm an NPR nerd. Not because I'm a history nerd. Not even because I'm an assasination nerd. I have been accused of such vile things! But I protest! I love her because I'm an Emma Goldman nerd, in all her obscure anarchistic and humanistic glory. Emma Goldman perfectly balanced being a political figure with still being a living-and-breathing, loving-and-losing human being. Something that many professional activists (as well as historians) lose track of. I think Sarah Vowell introduces just enough levity to bring the force of irrefutable humanity (and its resultant moderation) to a field badly needing in perspective. Although she could take glib pot shots at the Christian right like Marueen Dowd, she has enough class instead to put it all in perspective and remind us that people who are different aren't necessarily deviant. She actually appears to have listened to what Dr. King says.
