The most impressive thing about Derek Jeter
egoldstein
by egoldstein  7-6-2009    2
I'm a big Yankees fan and, of course, that makes me a Derek Jeter fan. But more important to me than his achievements on the field is the fact that in 13 seasons he has never (literally, never) acted in a way that was less than classy and worthy of being a role model for children. Considering the state of sports today and the way many athletes behave, i think he deserves enormous credit for his consistency as a human being. The quote below is from a veteran MLB umpire today...

As a follow up to the incredible story of Stephen Strasburg and his 103mph fastball (http://tinyurl.com/q7wy3r), check out this kid's last day as an amateur pitcher...sick. Should be the first rookie in D.C. to inject this much excitement since Obama...source says the Nationals with draft him first (duh) and bring him up by the end of the season.

"The Bird": Gone But Not Forgotten
dgreplay
by dgreplay  4-14-2009
So sad. What a wonderful character he was. Showed up out of nowhere and won just about every award possible in his first season (check out the amazing stats below). He was supremely talented, and baseball fans - regardless of their loyalty to the home team - adopted him as their own. He had a gentle goofyness about him and the irony that he looked like Jim Henson's beloved character "Big Bird" was hard to ignore. Detroit and Major League Baseball caught lighting in a bottle that summer and by the time his rookie season was over, "The Bird" was too. He was never the same again, but he left the kind of indelible mark on the game that few players since have. Baseball sure could use a bright light like Mark Fidrych again. The Bird is gone, but not forgotten...R.I.P.

Obama to delay Game 6 World Series
keeth
by keeth  10-15-2008    2
Reader comments: ***Wow, why didn't FOX just say no to running Obama's TV show???? Fox can just say no, we can't run your 30 minute segment. Right? Sure. So, Obama isn't forcing anyone to delay the game. Fox wants Obama's money, and Baseball wants Fox's money. See how capitalism works? Republicans need to learn about markets and how they work. ***If MLB doesn't have a problem letting OBama Speak, why does the GOP? Are they ELITIST? Do they not like Baseball, the National Pastime? Are they questioning the JUDGEMENT of the MLB, while Obama and the MLB made an agreement? Maybe Obama isn't the Elitist, maybe MCCAIN IS! Oh yeah, MCcain has 7 houses and 13 cars, of course he's an Elitist! Last time I checked, OBAMA has ONE HOUSE AND ONE CAR, just like the rest of US. ***Man, the RNC will jump on anything Obama does and make it out to be the most horrible thing ever. Big deal if the World Series is delayed by 15 minutes. Talk about grasping at straws. So sad.

ESPN - MLB Draft becoming a spectator event
kmakice
by kmakice  6-7-2007
Thanks in large part to fantasy sports, the major league baseball draft is finally becoming an event of great interest. Our own keeper league has been drafting college prospects for several years, hoping for a big June draft payoff. (Rest assured, Maine Squeeze fans ... David Price, Matt Wieters and Joe Savery will be protected on our roster next year.)

Nintendo tries to make MLB interactive
kmakice
by kmakice  7-8-2007    1
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays and San Francisco Giants have tried similar things in the past (ordering food, watching highlights, accessing stats) but dumped it from lack of use. I have to think, unless they incorporate some social networking capabilities for after-game parties, this will have a similar fate. (Does anyone need this?)

Baseball's suit is pure fantasy
kmakice
by kmakice  6-15-2007    1
At what point is this going to stop? Courts have rules time and again that suits like this one, trying to control fantasy sports, are groundless. If it isn't a major baseball league trying to claim ownership of players names and the stats they produce, it's someone suing Yahoo! and CBS Sportsline for "inventing" a game that existed thirty years before they heard of it.

Poor Sportsmanship
cniq_cniq
by cniq_cniq  6-2-2007
Okay, I'm a Red Sox fan, so feel free to call me biased. Even so, it is a shame that a player this talented stoops to such lows. Remember the play at first base in 2004? What makes it even worse, is that he is one of the players that you could root for to knock down another low class player's record (Barry Bonds) if he weren't so dirty himself. Thank goodness for Albert Pujols.
