Vintage Rio
brazilnut72
by brazilnut72  8-26-2009    2
These pictures came into my possession by way of a friend whose father came to Brazil as a missionary in the mid 1930's. They come from postcards he gathered while in Rio. I have others from the city of Belem, as well as pictures he took of the region where I live, but these shots of Rio in the '30s are spectacular.

1 Million Spiders Make Golden Silk for Rare Cloth
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  11-5-2009    1
Peers came up with the idea of weaving spider silk after learning about the French missionary Jacob Paul Camboué, who worked with spiders in Madagascar during the 1880s and 1890s. Camboué built a small, hand-driven machine to extract silk from up to 24 spiders at once, without harming them.

by sahara  10-15-2009    3
Headquartered in Washington, D.C. at a place known as the "C Street Center" or "Fellowship House," this 1890 townhouse, located behind the Madison Annex of the Library of Congress and near the United States Capitol, has 12 bedrooms, nine bathrooms, five living rooms, four dining rooms, three offices, a kitchen, and a small "chapel". The property is exempt from real property taxes because it is classified as a "special purpose" use. District of Columbia law exempts from taxation "buildings belonging to religious corporations or societies primarily and regularly used for religious worship, study, training, and missionary activities" and "buildings belonging to organizations which are charged with the administration, coordination, or unification of activities, locally or otherwise, of institutions or organizations entitled to exemption."

And I thought Portland was a Biking town ...
speerclan
by speerclan  8-13-2009    1
But this ... this is clearly what I would call a bicyclers Capitol. I've never been to Amsterdam, although I've met several people from there, and even a missionary who went there to try and help the younger generation connect with their spiritual lives. But, I have ALWAYS been impressed with the biking culture they have there. This post, and these pictures goes a long way in describing it. Mostly, I just loved the pics, and thought you might like to see what a LOT of bikes looks like.

Pakistan faces Christian protest after eight people 'burned alive'
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  8-4-2009    1
Missionary schools across Pakistan closed on Monday in a three day protest against the deaths of up to seven Christians who were burned alive in clashes with Muslims. But glad the atheists are ignoring this because it only makes sense to condemn the victims who are being burned alive. Nice. So atheists, tell me, are there any Christians who need to be condemned because they asked a girl who was disrupting a classroom during Sunday School to "be quiet." I know it's horrific that a Christian could do such a thing as asking someone to be quiet during church. I mean, burning someone alive isn't nearly as bad....dontcha think?

A (good, "old-fashioned") journalist ... (4.00 / 2) is never there to examine one side of a story. American journalism has been in a sad state for many years. **Warning: slightly topical tangent alert:** Hell, we never heard more than the one ever-saintly angle on Mother Teresa for crying out loud, whereas so many in the rest of the world at least had the opportunity to examine other info. If you ask your average Indian exposed to her works, she isn't regarded as a saint. Granted, the whole point behind missionary work is conversion to the missionary's faith, but she was held out to be to be the ultimate humanitarian ... and that is simply not the truth. I know, I know -- Mother Teresa?? You can't trust anything. :) If we never had folks like Nir, we'd never see the inside of many worlds or have a single clue whether we're being propagandized by our own media and government. The one thing America needs a lot less of is ignorance.

Tweenbots – silly, sweet... and heartening
Lexica
by Lexica  5-7-2009
Sweet in a non-cloying way, and a reminder of the basic inherent generosity and goodness of people. More: The results were unexpected. Over the course of the following months, throughout numerous missions, the Tweenbots were successful in rolling from their start point to their far-away destination assisted only by strangers. Every time the robot got caught under a park bench, ground futilely against a curb, or became trapped in a pothole, some passerby would always rescue it and send it toward its goal. Never once was a Tweenbot lost or damaged. Often, people would ignore the instructions to aim the Tweenbot in the “right” direction, if that direction meant sending the robot into a perilous situation. One man turned the robot back in the direction from which it had just come, saying out loud to the Tweenbot, "You can’t go that way, it’s toward the road.”

The New Christianity Is Sarah Palin's Cup-o'-Tea
papananook
by papananook  4-26-2009    1
Long but fascinating article, here's a bit more: A New Reformation? This development has not gone wholly unnoticed. Here's how an Atlantic Monthly editor portentously introduced historian Philip Jenkins' October 2002 article, "The Next Christianity": We stand at a historical turning point, the author argues -- one that is as epochal for the Christian world as the original Reformation. Around the globe Christianity is growing and mutating in ways that observers in the West tend not to see. Tumultuous conflicts within Christianity will leave a mark deeper than Islam's on the century ahead. Jenkins accurately depicted the radical nature of the ‘religious revolution' underway which, he wrote, "one might equate with the Counter-Reformation." He also pegged its goal: restoring a global Christian church "filled with spiritual power and able to exorcise the demonic forces that cause sickness and poverty."

Warning! Passover Family Pack: Everything You Need to Enjoy a Passover Seder Dinner" is Christian!
ruhamaf
by ruhamaf  3-31-2009
Unfortunately I couldn't clip it all, so go to the link to read it. "Rabbi Tovia Singer, director of Outreach Judaism, warned, "Despite the innocent-sounding title 'Passover Family Pack: Everything You Need to Enjoy a Passover Seder Dinner,' the guide quickly departs from the traditional holiday message once it is opened." "The 'Passover Kit' is an insidious tool Christian organizations use to convert Jewish people," declared Singer, who also urged buyers to lobby booksellers' corporate offices to remove the publication from Judaism publications lists."

Hmmm, this is tricky one -- on one side Israel is saying they don't want an anti-Semitic gathering or protest yet they have no problem with the Vatican having a say about anything at all regarding this - Am I wrong or didn't the Vatican allow German SS to escape there, for that matter didn't Prescott Bush help with funding of the German activities?? Something is fishy here!! What I just stated isn't hard to find factually on the net -- To me (as far as the USA) is concerned its totally denial of its past and NOT wanting to deal with the restitution of people of color -- to me there has been and still is worse treatment of people of color around the globe that outnumbers anything to that to just one set of people both in death and in oppression! At least the Jews got reparations, apologies, acknowledgment from all the countries involved plus still have their intact heritage and history.. That is NOT so with blacks here in this nation THEY are just now beginning to find truth to their

“Sentenced to jail for engaging in peaceful free speech”

Hoye said the majority of the sidewalk counselors are women, many of them elderly. This makes no difference to the escorts. “They push and shove all the people I work with,” he said. “I saw them push an 89-year-old lady! They also pushed an 80-year-old woman I work with. The 89-year-old lady stands on the edge of the curb on the sidewalk and says softly, ‘Abortion stops a beating heart.’ That’s all she does. And do you know what they do? They stand on both sides of her, shouting ‘La, la, la, la, la!’ as loud as they can.”

St.Patrick ~ Bishop ~ Apostle Of Ireland

A popular folk tale says that St. Patrick chased all snakes from Ireland, but there is no historical basis for this story... Another folk tale, that he used shamrocks to teach about the holy Trinity, is also generally agreed to be a myth... In Gaelic the saint's name is Padraig. http://www.answers.com/St%20Patrick

(There is some dispute over where this captivity took place. Although many believe he was taken to live in Mount Slemish in County Antrim, it is more likely that he was held in County Mayo near Killala.) During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. (It is also believed that Patrick first began to dream of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity.) Guided By Visions After more than six years as a prisoner, Patrick escaped. According to his writing, a voice-which he believed to be God's-spoke to him in a dream, telling him it was time to leave Ireland. To do so, Patrick walked nearly 200 miles from County Mayo, where it is believed he was held, to the Irish coast. After escaping to Britain, Patrick reported that he experienced a second revelation-an angel in a dream tells him to return to Ireland as a missionary. Soon after, Patrick began reli
