The Best Bar In America
zizzy
by zizzy  11-22-2009
Minneapolis is a fun city. Nyes is another Twin-Cites gem More accurately, it is the two best bars in America--Nye's Bar, known as the "Old Side" to its ancient staff and unshifting regulars, and the upscale bordello kitsch of the Polonaise Room--connected through their shared fire wall by a pair of swinging doors. When it comes right down to it, you're either Nye's or you're Polonaise, making this place a kind of crossroads inside and out.

One Reason Not To Spend 10 Minutes and 35 Seconds With John Piper
debbyski
by debbyski  11-16-2009    5
He gets a "A" for his efforts at fear mongering. "As the church continues to debate the issue of homosexuality, we find ourselves facing another culture of fear. Many in the church fear those who are other, who are different, and are able to find ways to manipulate scripture to support this fear. And it certainly doesn’t help when extremely influential Christian leaders like John Piper make absolutely ridiculous statements about the connection between a freak tornado and an ELCA meeting. I have to wonder if even John Piper really believes what he has written – or whether this is a convenient way to support the discrimination and hate of the LGBT community. This is conspiratorial bunk that uses the bible as a weapon of ideology, not a source to find God's grace."

Lawmakers seek ban on laptops in airliner cockpits
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  11-3-2009    1
This is the mentality of legislators. They approach this isolated situation as if it were a quickly escalating ‘problem’ that must be addressed immediately instead of leaving it to the airline to tighten their own rules of conduct for pilots. Legislators love to jump on stuff like this because it has the appearance, to us lowly tax payers, that they are coming to our rescue to protet us from the evil use of laptops in cockpits. And it makes them feel good about themselves that they are doing something useful. More legislation! More rules! More laws! More oversight! Yeah, that will make us all be more responsible.

US Airways Settles Intimidation Lawsuit Filed by Flying Imams

The imams filed suit in 2007 in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, claiming they were unlawfully detained. Details of the settlement were not released, but will be presented to the federal court judge who let the case proceed. "Law enforcement officials did what they believed was appropriate to ensure the safety of travelers based on the information available at the time," said Tom Anderson, general counsel for the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in a statement. "We will continue to be vigilant in maintaining the security of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the safety of travelers who use it."... Posted by Robert on October 20, 2009

Obama Takes on Glenn Beck and ‘Tea Party’ Critics Over Healthcare
merrie
by merrie  9-13-2009
Then the President boarded Air Force One for a quick trip to Minneapolis for a rally on health insurance reform. Meanwhile, back in Washington Beck was broadcasting live on the Fox News Channel as part of something he’s dubbed “The 9-12 Project.” The occasion was a “tea party” march and rally organized by “FreedomWorks” to protest the “irresponsible government takeover of our nation’s healthcare, devastating new energy taxes, and trillions of dollars in red ink.” The video can be viewed online at www.whitehouse.gov. Read more at CSMonitor.com Excerpt follows: On his Saturday morning radio and YouTube broadcast, Obama spoke of “an anxiety that’s keeping more and more Americans awake at night.” “Over the last twelve months, nearly six million more Americans lost their health coverage " that’s 17,000 men and women every single day. We’re not just talking about Americans in poverty, either " we’re talking about middle-class Americans.

Flight nightmare and Continental could care less
smellydiaper
by smellydiaper  8-11-2009
Their customer service is non existent. Go to their web site and notice how no link what so ever to contact anybody. Just link and link to pages that only offer more menu's. How convenient. This is not isolated event. did google search on continental airlines complaints and some of the stories are outrageous. But i guess until the general public is aware of how they could care less for the customer they keep getting business. And that is all they care about. My solution is if you can't get them online then call their 800 number and voice your opinions of them. Sooner or later the CEO may get complaints from his cronies about all the calls and have to address the issue.

By the time the 47 passengers were allowed off the plane early the next morning, more than 10 hours after they'd left Houston, some of them hadn't eaten for as long as 18 hours, Christin said, only to be placated with a coupon for one free beverage. They should all sue Continental - what lousy treatment of their customers. I most likely would have been arrested and removed from the plane, just to get off.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that at a meeting this week of 150 Minnesota auto dealers, not one has gotten a single transaction approved by Washington. If Obama’s horrible policies aren’t because he wants to take away our freedoms, they’re just because he’s an idiot who has no idea what he’s doing. If Obama were a dictator, I’m quite certain he’d be a horrible tyrant who would strike down many freedoms, but as president at worst he’s Carter.

How California Could Turn its IOUs into Dollars
brightlight4
by brightlight4  7-24-2009    2
The problem was that most banks declined to honor the IOUs, at least after July 24. "They said something about not wanting to enable the dysfunctional state legislature," observed a San Diego Union-Tribune staff writer, "which is kind of funny as the federal government has been enabling the dysfunctional financial sector for almost a year." On July 21, California legislators were strong-armed into a tentative agreement on budget cuts, a forced move that was called "painful" by the Speaker of the Assembly and "devastating" by the executive director of the California State Association of Counties. The cuts involve more job losses, more bleeding of school funds, more closing of facilities. Worse, they will not solve the budget crisis long-term. The state's economy is expected to continue to deteriorate along with its revenues. But without banks to honor the state's IOUs, California has no time to negotiate or explore alternatives. There is no "quick fix," says UCLA Professor Daniel Mit

The Somalis who want to rid their community of these gangs must come forward or they will grow with their sense of power. Same is true of any gangs. Poverty is always an easy reason to lay blame but it's basically been a growing sub-culture that has been ALLOWED to flourish by failure to seriously crack down on all thugs.

Major Cities' Plummeting Crime Rates Mystifying
rmowery
by rmowery  7-19-2009    1
Not sure why they are baffled, it is pretty simple. Between Madoff, Wall Street and the banks wiping out a large portion of people's money and then the taxman, government, and foreclosures/layoffs taking the rest, there is not much for criminals to steal. You have to figure theft is out of the question since large majority of population has no $$, breaking and entering is tough - since so many foreclosures.
