Iranian Protesters to Obama: "You're Either With Us or With Them"
merrie
by merrie  11-6-2009
"I have made it clear that the United States of America wants to move beyond this past, and seeks a relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran based upon mutual interests and mutual respect." Now the Iranian protesters know who the man is with. Since we've never had a President who favored tyranny over liberty before, this appears to be uncharted territory for not only the protesters -- but the American citizenry as well.

Bear kills militants in Kashmir By Altaf Hussain BBC News, Srinagar A bear killed two militants after discovering them in its den in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say. Two other militants escaped, one of them badly wounded, after the attack in Kulgam district, south of Srinagar. The militants had assault rifles but were taken by surprise - police found the remains of pudding they had made to eat when the bear attacked. Animal attacks Wildlife experts say the conflict in Kashmir has actually resulted in an increase in the population of bears and leopards. Following the outbreak of the insurgency people had to hand in their weapons to police - which put a halt to poaching. As a result, there has been a greater incidence of man-animal conflict, say experts. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8339549.stm

US House: UN report on Gaza 'war crimes' is biased
infidel70
by infidel70  11-4-2009
The Goldstone report lambasted both sides in the war, which killed up to 1,387 Palestinians and 13 Israelis, but was harsher toward Israel. It gave Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants six months to mount credible investigations or face possible prosecution in the Hague. Both Israel and Hamas have denied committing any war crimes. Israel has criticized the report as unbalanced and says the 47-nation Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council, which commissioned the report, is biased against the Jewish state. ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-23-2009
On Thursday morning, a senior army officer, Brig. Moinuddin Haider, was assassinated by two gunmen who attacked his jeep during rush-hour traffic in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. The Taliban had warned before the start of the campaign in South Waziristan that they planned to unleash attacks against Pakistan’s military assets. The Taliban attacked the headquarters of the Pakistani Army, in Rawalpindi, in a commando-style raid on October 10. The insurgents took more than 40 civilians and soldiers hostage for 20 hours, and more than 20 people were killed in the siege.

Waziristan Displaced Crave for Help

"“Everyone was running from here to there to get transport. Through there were a few vehicles owned by local people they were useless because of the curfew as all main roads are closed for traffic,” he added. “All had to travel on feet to reach here, with women carrying their kids and men carrying their belongings on their heads and shoulders.” Khan said the journey was difficult. “We would rest for a few minutes after every two to three hours as we could not risk our lives due to the bombings and artillery shelling.” The UN Higher Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) says that around 250,000 out of South Waziristan’s total population of 800,000 left. However, independent sources believe 60 percent of the populace has been displaced in the new operation."

Italy also denied the Times' report that the US ambassador had submitted a formal complaint after discovering through intercepted phone conversations that Italians had been buying off militants in the far-west Herat province. A US embassy spokeswoman in Rome said the embassy does not comment "on internal diplomatic conversations that may or may not have occurred." The newspaper cited a high-ranking Western intelligence source as calling the Italian behaviour an "utter disgrace" and that the "Italians have a hell of a lot to answer for."

Afghan outlook bleak as Taliban grabs territory
jatfla
by jatfla  10-11-2009
While Obama plans his Peace Prize speech, our declared enemy is defeating our military for lack of commitment by their Commander-in-Chief. This is a travesty. The Taliban will, again, make Afghanistan it's launching site for terror attacks against the West, enslave it's population, and the soldiers who gave their lives there will have done it for nothing. All because of a lack of will. Well Ms Michelle says that she is now proud of America....I couldn't be more ashamed of her husband's treachery and abandonment. This is aiding our enemies and undermining the American soldier. Shame! This is Vietnam times TEN.

8 Troops Killed In Afghanistan; Remote Outposts Attacked
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-4-2009
Nuristan, bordering Pakistan, was where a militant raid on another outpost in July 2008 claimed the lives of nine American soldiers and led to allegations of negligence by their senior commanders. Army Gen. David Petraeus last week ordered a new investigation into that fighting, in which some 200 militants armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars pushed their way into the base, which is no longer operating. The region was key for Arab militants who battled alongside Afghan warriors during the 1980s U.S.-backed war against invading Russians because it is a rare place in South Asia where the Wahhabi sect of Islam is practiced – the same sect followed by Osama bin Laden and most Saudis.

Like the Basque country, Northern Ireland must prepare for occasional terrorist outrages
zizzy
by zizzy  9-29-2009    3
more @ clip source Eta's current nihilistic campaign probably provides an even better comparison. We may in fact have to accept that – just as Spain and the Basque country will be shaken occasionally by the odd Eta outrage – the same goes for Northern Ireland and extremist republican groups. Basque nationalism has actually enjoyed more compromises from the Spanish state in the areas of language, culture and devolved power than Irish nationalists experience presently under their own devolved settlement. But for those in Euskadi who dream of an independent UN-recognised state straddling the Pyrenees the struggle must go on. And just as the uncompromising Etarras (militants) will continue with their futile terror, so too will an eternally insolent minority on the republican fringe

Dirty war rages on Russia's doorstep

There, they were bound with duct tape and placed inside a car that had been wired with explosives and doused in petrol. Their captors sprayed chloroform into their hoods and abruptly departed. The men, who have never been charged with any crime, were left waiting to be blown to bits. It is usual for the security forces to claim that terrorist bombers have inadvertently triggered their device before they were able to plant it. On this occasion, however, Butayev and his friend Islam Askerov, 21, were not rendered helpless by the chloroform. They freed themselves, removed the explosives and placed them in a nearby field. But they were unable to wake the rest of the group before the death squad returned. They fled, leaving Butayev’s 22-year-old brother Artur and the other two behind. Days later, the three men were found dead at another spot, their bodies charred. The survivors are still hiding.

Terror Suspects' Failed Queens U-Haul Truck Bid
merrie
by merrie  9-20-2009
The truck rental bid failed when none of the men could produce a valid credit card. All refused to surrender the identification needed to pay cash, the manager of the Flushing U-Haul said. A team of FBI agents spent 10 hours Thursday combing through the Queens truck rental business. "We all feel very lucky right now," U-Haul manager Robert Larson told The News. When the FBI arrived, Larson said, "I was wondering, 'Where is Ashton Kutcher to tell me I've been punked?'" By the time the agents left, "I realized this is crazy, this is real, it's not a joke," Larson said. The feds turned up at the U-Haul in Jamaica around 11 a.m. Thursday as authorities continued tailing and interviewing suspects linked to the reputed Denver cell. At least three Afghan men - including Ahmad Afzali, a Queens imam identified by a U-Haul employee as one of the would-be renters - were questioned in New York by FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, sources said.

Amnesty International had been calling for Makan's release, claiming he had been ill treated in prison and subject to coercion and torture. The circumstances of his release and his imprisonment are not immediately clear, and Amnesty International has apparently suspended its appeal but is continuing to monitor Makan's situation. Others involved in the circumstances surrounding the now-famous videotaped death of the young Neda Agha-Soltan have fled Iran in fear for their own lives, including Dr. Arash Hejazi, who attended to Neda after she was shot, and the television journalist who interviewed Caspian Makan after Neda's untimely death.
