Green technology creating 'green collar' jobs
egoldstein
by egoldstein  8-26-2008    8
I stand strongly behind my belief that if this country committed ourselves to becoming energy independent with the same determination that we committed to putting a man on the moon, that we could do it and we could create millions of new jobs in the process. It would be an enormous driver of economic growth and strengthen our leverage in the Middle East because we would no longer be reliant on their oil.

Computer Models Suggests Mid-West Droughts...Oops
merrie
by merrie  8-6-2008
Floods…the opposite of droughts. Of course, today these alarmists are pointing at the floods in the Midwest and saying, “I told you so, here is proof of global warming.” In that case, what isn’t proof of global warming, and how does one go about debating these sorts of incongruities? Unfortunately, the media and politicians have not done a good enough job of making prophets account for their past errant prophetic utterances. Instead, they accept as fact whatever dubious claims Hansen and Gore happen to be making at the moment.

A Wisconsin family farmer criticizes the NAIS, which requires all livestock to carry a RFID tag (prohibitively expensive for non-CAFO-type operations, i.e., small family farmers). To him, it looks like another agribusiness attempt to shut down small, organic producers.

Al Gore Place Infant Son In Rocket To Escape A Dying Planet

Al Gore—or, as he is known in his own language, Gore-Al—placed his son, Kal-Al, gently in the one-passenger rocket ship, his brow furrowed by the great weight he carried in preserving the sole survivor of humanity’s hubristic folly.

"There is nothing left now but to ensure that my infant son does not meet the same fate as the rest of my doomed race," Gore said. "I will send him to a new planet, where he will, I hope, be raised by simple but kindly country folk and grow up to be a hero and protector to his adopted home."

Ghost towning steeped in mysteries of Old West
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-26-2008
Other ghost towners described making a half-dozen trips before finding the town, but agreed the search is half the fun. Though their motto is to "take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints," there are gifts to be found -- literally and figuratively -- at ghost towns. David Pike, who grew up in southern New Mexico and now lives in Washington, D.C., has rated nearly 20 New Mexico ghost towns on his Web site. He says ghost towning has helped him understand how his environment affects him and taught him to live in the moment. "It's hard to ignore a metaphor when you're standing right in the middle of it," he said. "When you're standing in a building that was once something and now is slowly fading into not being anything anymore, that's a stark reminder about appreciating what you've got when you've got it." Don't Miss * New Mexico Ghost Towns * Clint Thomsen's site (click on Ghost Towns link) * Todd Underwood's ghost town site Pike said he

For a modern-day travel mystery, try visiting a ghost town. I'm not referring to a town with paranormal activity, but one that has been abandoned or forgotten. The article I've clipped discusses this practice and points out that it can be exciting and a little dangerous.

Small Fuel Refinery for Ten Grand.
graphictruth
by graphictruth  7-8-2008
Feed stock, used to make the fuel, will cost about $1 per gallon, he said. ... “Henry Ford started the automobile revolution using ethanol, predicting that this renewable and accessible fuel would become the ‘fuel of the future,’ ” he said during the May launch of the Microfueler. “If not for the Prohibition laws in the 1920s and the subsequent rise of the oil industry, ethanol may never have lost its public appeal. E-Fuel will deliver on Ford’s prediction and enable consumers to bypass the costly oil infrastructure and their reliance on fossil fuels.” Butterfield is excited to be working in the field of alternative fuels again. He’s convinced that this time around, the oil market is not going to stabilize and prices will continue to rise. “I thought in 1980 the world was running out of oil. All the signs were there,” he said. “That was true back then, it’s just we were able to stave it off for 25 years. Now we can’t.”

But others remain strongly in support of biofuels. "Abandoning our commitment to ethanol and biofuels, as some would suggest we do, would do nothing to provide meaningful relief from high grain prices today or in the future," said Bob Dineen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association. "It would absolutely force the price of gas through the roof and require the import of more record-high foreign oil."

Flood victims say FEMA is doing a heckuva job
jatfla
by jatfla  6-24-2008
Since FEMA received mega-press for it's perceived failures during the Hurricane, it seemed fair to post a clip that gives the organization some praise for doing a good job. However, I believe the magnitude and circumstances are entirely different. I am still amazed by a government/Country who will so willingly hand out millions of dollars to its citizens who have lost homes and property in these *natural* disasters.
