Eating healthy to fight depression
egoldstein
by egoldstein  10-9-2009    3
The connection between physical and mental health seems absolute, so i suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that eating well is not only good for your body, but for your emotional well being too. I don't mean to sound naive or overly simplistic, but if everyone made a commitment to healthier eating and drinking i think it would solve a whole lot of our problems - including bringing down the overall costs of health care. I say this mostly sarcastically, but in some way i feel that people who eat and drink like crap should have to pay higher taxes - there is no doubt their eating habits cause a greater economic burden on society.

Mediterranean Diet Helps Control Diabetes
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  9-1-2009    1
people who followed the Mediterranean diet group also experienced improvement in other heart disease risk factors. Interestingly, weight loss was relatively comparable between the two groups by the end of the trial, suggesting that attributes of the Mediterranean diet beyond weight loss affect blood sugar control.

Food of the Week: Olive oil, extra virgin
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  6-1-2009    1
A Few Quick Serving Ideas: Use extra virgin olive oil in your salad dressings. Purée roasted garlic, cooked potatoes and extra virgin olive oil together to make exceptionally delicious garlic mashed potatoes. Season to taste. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil over healthy sautéed vegetables before serving. Purée extra virgin olive oil, garlic and your favorite beans together in a food processor. Season to taste and serve as a dip. Instead of putting the butter dish out on the table, place a small cup of extra virgin olive oil out instead to use on your bread or rolls. For extra flavor, try adding a little Balsamic vinegar or any of your favorite spices to the extra virgin olive oil.

FDA Warns of Harmful Diet Pills
brightlight4
by brightlight4  12-24-2008
FDA analysis found undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients in many of these products–and in some cases “prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed their maximum recommended dosages,” according to Janet Woodcock, M.D., director, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA. The list includes sibutramine (a controlled substance), rimonabant (a drug not approved for marketing in the United States), phenytoin (an anti-seizure medication), and phenolphthalein (a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer causing agent). Some of the amounts of active pharmaceutical ingredients far exceeded the FDA-recommended levels, putting consumers’ health at risk. Pretty shocking.

Which diet is better?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-17-2008
Although participants actually decreased their total daily calories consumed by a similar amount, net weight loss from the low-fat diet after two years was only 6.5 lbs. (2.9 kg) compared to 10 lbs. (4.4 kg) on the Mediterranean diet, and 10.3 lbs. (4.7 kg) on the low-carbohydrate diet. "These weight reduction rates are comparable to results from physician-prescribed weight loss medications," explains Dr. Iris Shai, the lead researcher. The low-fat diet reduced the total cholesterol to HDL ratio by only 12 percent, while the low-carbohydrate diet improved the same ratio by 20 percent. Lipids improved the most in the low-carbohydrate, with a 20% increase in the HDL ("good") cholesterol and, 14% decrease in triglycerides. In all three diets, inflammatory and liver function biomarkers was equally improved. However, among diabetic participants, the standard low-fat diet actually increased the fasting glucose levels by 12mg/dL, while the Mediterranean diet induced a decrease in fasting g

Low-Carb Diet Best for Weight, Cholesterol
jatfla
by jatfla  7-16-2008    1
I couldn't get it all to clip, but it was very interesting. While I don't have a weight problem, cholesterol is a genetic problem. Jeezz...I have to do more research. While I can resist every single sweet, dessert around... I love every carbohydrate that is available.

Eating to be Sexy

That's the subtitle of an irresistible new book that showed up in the RealAge offices a week ago. Called Mediterranean Women Stay Slim, Too, it was written by Melissa Kelly, an admired American chef who inherited her love of cooking from her Italian grandfather, Primo Magnani. (Her flagship restaurant is named Primo.) Unlike many chefs, Kelly has managed to stay vibrantly slim and healthy over the years, thanks to a few rules she cooked up for herself:

Can You Prevent Alzheimer's Disease?
Sorgalim
by Sorgalim  2-4-2007
Other actions that you can take to prevent Alzheimer's are less clear...Some research suggests that the benefit of eating vegetables to prevent Alzheimer's is due to the vitamin Econtained in the vegetables themselves or in the oils added in salads...Where does all of his leave us? Even if there's no guarantee you will never develop Alzheimer's disease, exercising regularly and eating more fish and vegetables are certainly sensible prescriptions for maintaining general health....And keeping the brain sharp with mental exercises sounds like lots of fun...So, you don't think that we should keep going for the the best results..
