POPSWhere in the World is Global Warming a Priority? Sure, there would be a huge transfer of wealth from the developed nations to developing nations, but that’s not what Torethy Frank wants. She says, “There is too much corruption in the government and it goes in people’s pockets. Give the money directly to the people for businesses so we can support ourselves without having to rely on the government.” As David Kreutzer mentions in his Politico chat wrap, there much faster and much less expensive ways to adapt to climate change than trying to change the temperature by capping greenhouse gas emissions. Mosquito nets and attacking breeding grounds of mosquitoes and building levees to protect against potentially rising sea levels are all much cheaper but dramatically more effective than signing on to something that would prohibit these countries to develop.

POPSScientists Create New Life Form to Clean Up Water "We're kind of making a new machine," said Dan Tarjan, a senior majoring in biology at University of Virginia. The live machine is to be entered in The International Genetically Engineered Machine competition, which will be held Halloween weekend at MIT. The annual competition is built on the premise that life can be broken down into a warehouse of off-the-shelf, interchangeable parts and reassembled into creatures that have never existed. Over 100 teams will use synthetic biology (similar to genetic engineering) to show that DNA building blocks (BioBricks) don’t have to come from nature and can be designed and built from standardized parts that behave predictably. The hope is that these tiny factories will produce clean biofuels, powerful new medicines and environmental pollution sponges. Good luck to all contestants.

POPSJury says chemotherapy drug death was "manslaughter" continued If you accidentally shoot your best friend in a hunting accident, you're held responsible (unless you're the U.S. Vice President, of course). If you have a swimming pool in your back yard, and a drunken neighbor drowns in your pool, you're also held responsible. But somehow, if you're a doctor or pharmacist, and you prescribe a fatal dose of toxic chemicals to a patient, you're off the hook! Doctors and pharmacists have been getting away with murder for so long that no one even remembers what it's like to hold them responsible for their actions. Let's face it: They're in the business of dealing poisons. And when you deal in poison, there needs to be a level of personal responsibility that's adhered to by working professionals. But instead of professionalism, what we're seeing in this case is the complete abandonment of any such notion. When the patient dies, they simply "lose the paperwork" to cover their tracks.

POPSChildren face swine flu drug test - to be used as guinea pigs for untested vaccines. "The children, aged between six months and 12 years, are being recruited at five test venues in Oxford, Bristol, Southampton, Exeter and London. " "We are sort of in a race against time because we know the flu season is already started. We hope to immunise the children over the next 10 days or so." The most recent data from the Government showed the number of swine flu cases across the country almost doubled in a week, from an estimated 5,000 to 9,000, prompting speculation a second wave of infections could be on its way. The Government is hoping to start vaccinating millions of people in high-risk groups, such as those with asthma and diabetes, and health workers, next month. Across the UK, 82 deaths have been linked to the virus, with 70 in England, nine in Scotland, one in Wales and two in Northern Ireland. POPS"Anarchy" in the 3rd World unless West Coughs up Ca$h This is laughable. Once again the U.N. tried to soak developed nations. And they warn anarchy will grip the 3rd world. Hello.... Anarchy already rules the 3rd world, and always has. Look at the corrupt "representatives" they send to the U.N. Look at their corrupt (and sometimes cannibal) leaders. Look at the kingdoms of the Middle East. If that isn't anarchy, I don't know what anarchy is.

POPSH1N1 Influenza Update Treatment If you get sick: * Talk to your doctor. You may need to get tested to be sure you have H1N1 flu. * Stay home from school or work until you are feeling better and your fever has been gone for at least 24 hours. Try to avoid being around other people. This will reduce the risk of spreading the flu to others. * If you have to go outside, wear a mask over your nose and mouth if you can. * Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. * If you don't have a tissue, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use the bend in your arm, rather than using your hands. * Wash your hands every time you cough or sneeze. To treat H1N1 flu, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medicine such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza). These medicines can help you feel better faster and may prevent other health problems caused by the flu.

POPSFor Profit Health Care at the Root of the Problem How about changing our fire departments to for profit companies? They'd put out fires depending on the worth of the property. Anything under $250,000 is not worth fooling with. Sounds good, doesn't it? We already have for profit soldiers fighting our wars for us. And for profit prisons. Why is health care for profit anyway. The quick answer, of course, it because it makes a lot of money. Should it? I think not. And I think the for profit fire house is a load of BS too.

POPSGunmen kill 17 people at a drug rehab in Mexico
What an act of insane massacre. And this is just one chapter in a multi-volume murderous campaign. And while the USA is 12,000 miles away burning opium fields in Afghanistan -- (while the opium crop in Turkey is used for medicines) -- this goes on in our backyard and inner cities. If leaders DID learn from history you'd think they should know that the policy of Prohibition (against booze) led to gang wars and murderous violence, out-of-control, non-stoppable. But the Drug Wars are a nice excuse for covert wars or sounding like you're "doing good," -- and a handy way to put lots of citizens in jail, esp. those who are more 'non-conformist." The U.S. has a myth/story of the 'Valentine's Day Massacre.' but this is far worse...yet we continue to rerun our old B&W charade stories while vivid reality is exploding all around. IMO: Legalize it. Tax it. Get out of debt. Use the Afghan opium crop for medicines. Stop the covert drug wars. Free the prisoners. Stop waving our flag f

POPSHow Big Pharma pushed a more-expensive, no-more-effective drug
More: Lexapro had $2.3 billion in sales in 2008 even though generic versions of Celexa and every other drug in the class sell for a fraction of Lexapro’s price. For example, a month’s supply of 5-milligram tablets of Lexapro costs $87.99 at drugstore.com, compared to $14.99 for a month’s supply of a generic version of Prozac. Forest has recently been raising the price of Lexapro to make up for a decline in its use… It is impossible to unpack all of the reasons for these prescriptions, but some industry critics say one reason could be the money doctors make from Forest. Psychiatrists make more money from drug makers than any other medical specialty, according to analyses of payment data. And Forest gives more money and food to doctors than many of its far larger rivals… Forest’s payments to doctors in 2008 were surpassed only by those of Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Novartis and Merck — companies with annual sales that are five to 10 times larger than Forest’s.

POPSReal-Life Fountain of Youth is Only a Matter of Time I have actually been considering this question for a while. I have no doubt that we will work out how to naturally extend our lives "qualitatively rather than quantitatively". So I realize there has to be other changes in the way we approach life and death that need to change. Tis, for me certainly a fascinating wondering and exploration. "...the question is not when, but how it will be done and (most importantly) whether incredible longevity medicines and technologies will have a net benefit to the world or create more problems than they are worth." webecoist

POPSSome of our foods are poisons!
This subject will always be actual. It's our life, after all. Modifying old sentence, we are eating to live, not to suffer from what we eat. And drink. So, better check what you eat and especially how you feed your kids; not force them to pay for our mistakes and our inaction toward crooks, making living on our health. There are many bizarre theories in food and medical science to be revised and as soon as we start to do that as better. How many troubles can be prevented! First of all it is the notion that we can safely eat artificial food, practically plastic. We are not! We cannot be healthier neither with synthetic food, nor with chemical medicines. Even naturally occurred remedies have to be applied carefully. Chemical "revolution" of past century in relation to our life and health is over. One more remark. Please note, that not all toxins are poisons and most dangerous stuff in our food not toxins, which are produced by some microbes, but man made poisons, added there by stu

POPSThings That I Know That You Should Know Too The video is mostly about Anthrax, but there are many dangerous "little buggers" out there we should all know about. From several types of Herpes, to H1N1. Most have treatments none have true cures. While scientists study these endlessly, the big pharmaceutical companies are not funding research for cures. There is no big future profit if there is no disease. There is huge profit in treatments, and medicines. Funding for cure research comes from "venture philanthropy", private donation and other non-governmental groups and grants. A lot of money for college research comes from the alumni, and very little from government grants.
