Should ADHD Drugs Be Available To All Consumers?

ADD and ADHD drugs have become the subject of controversy amid investigations into professional athletes use of performance enhancing supplements. Some people liken ADD drugs to "brain steroids", setting off a debate over the ethics of these medications being given to those who haven't been diagnosed with the disorder.

What Happens When the Microbes That Keep Us Healthy Disappear?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  1-2-2010    2
"When antibiotics were first introduced, they were miraculous drugs—and they still are," Blaser says. "But it really wasn't fully considered that antibiotics select for resistance." And an antibiotic will not only impact the infection it is targeted for. "It will select for resistance across the microbiome," he added. Blaser doesn't call for abandoning a whole class of effective drugs, but he does advocate for a better understanding of the potential trade-offs—even if we might not yet have all the answers. "I don't think anyone was putting that trade-off on the plate," says Blaser, who notes that both doctors and patients should reserve antibiotic use to cases where they are necessary.

I sent the e-mail to the PM, but I would like some input from my Canadian clipper friends before I sign the petition, if in fact, the petition is not limited to Canadian citizens. ------------------------------------------------------------ Wherever you are in the world, please send your thoughts on Bill C-6 and the government’s attempts to eliminate Canadians’ health rights and constitutional freedoms directly to Prime Minister Stephen Harper pm@pm.gc.ca Also, lawyer Shawn Buckley has drafted a fairer Charter of Health Freedoms to replace the regressive and undemocratic Bill C-6. Miracle at Memorial: Mom and Baby Die During Labor, Revived
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  12-29-2009    3
"After trying, in vain, to resuscitate Tracey for several minutes, Dr. Martin decided to do an emergency c-section right there in the delivery room. But when the baby came out, he too wasn't breathing." "Half of my family was laying there in front of me, there's no other way to say it, but dead," said Mike. "Then came the Hermanstorfer's Christmas miracle. "Immediately after delivering him, her pulse came back," said Dr. Martin. Martin tells 11 News, when pregnant women have complications, they have been known to recover once the baby is delivered." After the delivery, doctors rushed Tracey to the operating room to complete the surgery. In the meantime, Coltyn's tiny, lifeless, body was handed to his father Mike. Doctors still worked to get the baby breathing. "They actually got him started right in my hands. That is an amazing feeling," said Mike.

Stroke Prevention Starts with Knowing the Signs of a TIA
fatlester
by fatlester  12-1-2009
TIA's or Transient Ischemic Attacks are often referred to as mild or "mini" strokes. The reality is that TIA's are often the first warning sign of an upcoming stroke, and should be treated with utmost seriousness. By knowing the signs of a TIA, one can recognize them when a TIA strikes, and thus know the severity of the attack, and being cognizant of the need to seek immediate medical attention in such a scenario. A stroke is no joke. Understanding the preliminary indicators and warning signs is the first step to prevent a major stroke before it occurs.

The Health Bill Is Scary
merrie
by merrie  12-21-2009    2
My 25 years as a practicing physician have shown me what happens when government attempts to practice medicine: Doctors respond to government coercion instead of patient cues, and patients die prematurely. Even if the public option is eliminated from the bill, these onerous rationing provisions will remain intact. For instance, the Reid bill (in sections 3403 and 2021) explicitly empowers Medicare to deny treatment based on cost. An Independent Medicare Advisory Board created by the bill"composed of permanent, unelected and, therefore, unaccountable members"will greatly expand the rationing practices that already occur in the program. Medicare, for example, has limited cancer patients' access to Epogen, a costly but vital drug that stimulates red blood cell production. It has limited the use of virtual, and safer, colonoscopies due to cost concerns. And Medicare refuses medical claims at twice the rate of the largest private insurers.

Dana-Farber researchers find that supporting terminal patients' spiritual needs improves end-of-life outcomes

I guess this isn't all that surprising, but it's interesting that they've been able to come up with some solid documentation. At first I thought they were saying that pastoral care actually helps medical outcomes, but it doesn't. It just means people feel better as they're dying, which, obivously, is also significant.

Obama's False Economic Consensus
infidel70
by infidel70  12-14-2009    1
Greg Mankiw, to cite one of scores of possible examples, is an "economist who's looked at it," and he had an op-ed in The New York Times just yesterday that cited several other economists who have looked at stimulus packages throughout the ages. His conclusion? Successful stimulus relies almost entirely on cuts in business and income taxes. Failed stimulus relies mostly on increases in government spending. A growing body of evidence suggests that traditional Keynesian nostrums might not be the best medicine. Obama is a political master at drawing boundaries around the "respectable" debate and marginalizing a swath of his critics as being beyond the pale.

I become more concerned with modern medicine in the form of pharmaceuticals daily. They are making rash, profit motivated, decisions and the government falls in line as the tax revenue and lobby gifts/graft is running free. Get healthy, get some sun, eat fresh, local produce and quit feeding the mega-national beasts.

Democrat Utopia: Free Unicorns for Everyone
merrie
by merrie  12-11-2009    3
In addition to spending billions more than it takes in, Michigan's $2.3 billion community health budget, 90 percent of which is Medicaid, will get slammed with an additional $500 million or so by socialized medicine. And that's just part of the problem. Emergency Jobless Claims Hit All-Time High: And I thought President Obama said the economy was recovering. The number you won't hear mentioned anywhere in the Mainstream Media: 327,729. That is how many people shifted to Emergency Unemployment Compensation programs in the last week alone, hitting an all time record high of 4.2 million! Oh, and did you hear? America is broke -- and the Democrats keep spending: Politico's headline reads 'Dems to lift debt ceiling by $1.8 trillion, fear 2010 backlash'. In a nutshell, the Statists are in a central-planning frenzy and won't let up until they control health care and every energy-consuming business in the country:
