POPSCulture of secrecy and deception US taxpayers are required to report all foreign financial accounts if their total value exceeds $10,000 at any point during a given year, prosecutors said. Failure to report the accounts can result in a penalty of up to 50 percent of the amount in the accounts. The report states that in some instances, UBS declined to report accounts to the IRS when clients opened them in the names of offshore corporations, trusts, foundations or other entities, even if the bank knew the true beneficial owners were US taxpayers. In Liechtenstein, the report said the royal family's LGT Group contributed to a "culture of secrecy and deception" that enabled clients to "evade US taxes, dodge creditors, and ignore court orders."

POPSA green power incentive program for municipalities A national green energy corporation, Smart Power, launched a marketing campaign several years ago called "Clean Energy Communities." Municipalities which sign up for the program, demonstrate a commitment to continued development of clean energy options, and succeed in reaching certain benchmark levels of household and business participation in clean energy initiatives, can receive incentives such as a free 1kW solar installation or communitywide energy audit. It's been fairly successful in Connecticutt and has expanded into Pennsylvania and North Carolina. I don't know if this is legitimate, or just another corporate greenwashing ploy, but it sounds good.

POPSYour Favorite 'Natural' Brands May Not Be What They Seem Marketing strategies have been fooling you, convincing you to trust that the niche brands continue to be small, environmentally conscious businesses with ecologically sound practices. In fact, they are frequently cogs in the giant corporate wheel. It is time to question how much the ownership and neglectful marketing of these "pseudo" responsible brands warrant crossing them off your shopping list. And it is time to find products more in tune with your values -- at least until they, too, get bought out by a large conglomerate.

POPSThe profit from obesity Nevertheless, there are enormous profits to be had from obesity. The foods that maximise profit just happen to be those high in sugar or fat. They are cheap to produce, easy to brand and market, and easy to stock in supermarket aisles. And there are numerous ways to encourage people who are pre-obese to buy these foods. Sedentary behaviour is also profitable, and encouraged by industry. A moped is more glamorous than a bicycle. A new computer game will re-invigorate peoples' interest, but not their bodies.

POPSGoogle Skimps on it's own advertising.
I also heard Krispy Kreme donuts don't spend on Advertising. Why spend money, when you get known through word of mouth. It's clear how it works, they sell advertising, and allow those who advertise to create programs that include a google search engine with their own advertising or toolbar downloads. When it all comes down to it. a great product will advertise it's self. Two of the biggest functions of Advertising, seem to be to create salaries for public relations, and marketing executives, and for use as a tax deduction. There comes a point when there is enough liquidity, to pay the tax man continue development, and still give the share holders a significant profit. Why is is an archetype? It illustrates the way some advertising strategies have been almost worthless. Google is having their cart drawn by the horses from whom they already profit. They've learned how to create two links with the one click. I wonder if a Krispy Kreme donut would make it through customs?

POPSReggae, Rastafari, and the Rhetoric of Social Control From 1959 to 1971, Jamaica's popular music became identified with the Rastafarians, a social movement that gave voice to the country's poor black communities. In response to this challenge, the Jamaican government banned politically controversial reggae songs from the airwaves and jailed or deported Rastafarian leaders.
