ObamaCare: A Bad Deal for Young Adults
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009
Massachusetts benefits from another type of subsidy that props up its regime of mandates and price controls: large subsidies from the federal government. In contrast, the United States as a whole has no external party it can exploit to subsidize a nationwide Massachusetts-style health care overhaul"unless Congress finances that overhaul through additional deficit spending, which is really just another way of taxing the young to subsidize the old. by Aaron Yelowitz Aaron Yelowitz is an associate professor of economics at the University of Kentucky and an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute. This paper is based on a lecture delivered to the Undergraduate Economics Society at the University of Kentucky on October 1, 2009.

Stock Shock! The Movie
sahara
by sahara  10-27-2009
The movie exposes a technique known as naked short selling, which has resulted in the collapse of the stock value of some of America’s most promising public companies. Sirius XM, often labeled as one of the most manipulated stocks in the market, is dissected in the movie. “Stock Shock” interviews individual investors who saw their stock price hit a high of $9.00/share and then plummet to a horrifying low of 5 cents in 2009. “Stock Shock” has spurred a grassroots movement helping convince the SEC to enact and make permanent an emergency rule to ban abusive naked short-selling. It’s no wonder. The reviews are impressive: “Shocking and eye-opening!” “It’s an awakening. Academy Award…Stock Shock should get one,” says radio host Jim Puplava of the Financial Sense Newshour. Industry expert and shareholder activist Bud Burrell remarks: “I will give it 10 stars of 10. It is the best doc of this length I have ever seen. I think this will go into the defining literature of this sp

Timed more strategically, you might be able to say, "Screw 'em." I hear something about needing their support at the U.N.against, Oh..N.Korea,...Iran,..maybe even Chavez.

Gov't. Largely Responsible For Hi Insrnce.Costs
davboz
by davboz   10-13-2009    3
This has several negative effects. One is that it decreases both competition and supply, both of which raise prices for consumers. This also means that states have the power to grant licenses to insurance companies, meaning that any new insurance company from its beginnings has to meet state-mandated standards. This is a huge barrier to entry, keeping newcomers out of what would otherwise be a highly competitive market and once again increasing prices for consumers. In a free market, profits are a signal telling more entrepreneurs to enter a market. More and more firms will enter the market until the profits have dropped low enough to discourage market entry. ............ Obama has said that under his current proposal, he would eliminate these state barriers.......... This completely ignores the fact that, under the necessary and proper clause, the government is only allowed to regulate those industries that it must to carry out its stated function.

It's the Spending, Stupid By John Stossel
merrie
by merrie  10-7-2009    1
But the income tax is big and visible, so it's a problem that a growing number of people don't pay, but get benefits from those who do. Frederic Bastiat, the great 19th-century French economist, defined the state as "that great fiction by which everyone tries to live at the expense of everyone else." I don't know if he envisioned one half of the population living off the other half. It's important not to confuse the interests of the taxpayers with the interests of the politicians and other tax consumers. Yet that is done all the time. When the government bought toxic assets (of zero market value) from the banks, it said taxpayers would profit when the economy recovered and the assets once again commanded a positive price in the market. Even if we make the dubious assumption that the government is savvy enough to buy low and sell high, it's not the taxpayers who would benefit from any profits. The politicians will spend every penny, rather than cutting taxes.

House Democrats are struggling with getting their 10-year, $1 trillion-plus bill down to the $900 billion price tag Obama prefers. Major cuts could be required, but Democrats want to protect the subsidies their plan offers to low-income Americans to help them buy coverage. Those subsidies are the most costly part of the bill.

game plan hasn't worked out so well for Venezuelans. And check out the poor schlub sitting next to her. You can almost read his mind. How the heck did I get stuck sitting next to this national embarrassment? After "reforming" health care, the National Socialist Democrats will target the energy industry. Whether through cap-and-tax or some other stealthy mechanism, Democrats will punish more job creators as certainly as night follows day. And If Waters is really the best that Californians can do, I would recommend that residents start evacuating now. Posted by directorblue

Do You Notice Anything Shrivelling? by Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  9-2-2009    2
. . . who conceive through donor sperm are getting it from the United States, mainly from men in Georgia and northern Florida. Canada’s future is now in American hands. You know how it is: you wait ages for a good sperm story and then they all come at once. It seems there’s also a shortage of the stuff in Sweden. But, in contrast to Canada, this is caused not by government intervention in supply but by a surge in demand, from Swedish lesbian couples anxious to conceive. So they headed off to the sperm clinic, whereupon the Sapphic demand ran into the problem of male inability to satisfy it. There appear to be higher than usual levels of non-functioning sperm. It’s a widespread problem: “Concern As Sperm Count Falls By A Third In UK Men” (the Daily Mail, 2004). Don’t ask me why: I’d blame Tony Blair’s cozying up to Bush were it not for "Sperm Counts Drops 25 Per Cent In Younger Men" (the Independent , 1996), so maybe it was John Major pulling out of the . . .

Health Rations and You
merrie
by merrie  7-19-2009    1
Having a health care "system" is itself the problem. It implies that politicians dictate your medical choices, at your expense, regardless of whether their "system" serves your individual needs and preferences. Consumers are frustrated with the low-quality politicized school systems and the regularly-jammed highway systems. We are quite pleased with our iPods and laptops. But there is no government-run consumer electronics "system;" instead, there's a relatively free market. A free market would do the same for medicine. But politicians have imposed their will upon what should be individual medical decisions, resulting in an un-free market. The tax codes punishes you for not buying insurance through your employer, so you're stuck with your employer's few options. This coddles insurance companies, who are accountable to your employers instead of you.

Predicting the price of gold by looking at web site stats
egoldstein
by egoldstein  8-13-2009    2
This has to be the most novel approach to valuing a stock or commodity i've ever seen. Kitco is a major web site for covering commodities. This analyst is basically saying that as the price of gold rises, so does the traffic to Kitco.com. So, he checked out Kitco's traffic on Alexa and came to the conclusion that since the traffic is relatively low, it is very unlikely that gold is overvalued. I have no idea if this is wise, but it sure it an interesting take.

Charity can't do it all
jklugman
by jklugman  7-16-2009    2
This is about a NFP child care center serving low income people in my home town. Because foundations are tightening their belts, the center is facing the choice to either close, raise its fees, or deal with the bureaucratic hassle of accepting federal/state funding. Child care is a damn important service for working families; that a foundation cut its funding to it so it could serve even more basic needs speaks volumes about the volunteer sector's capacity to deal with the problems of poverty US society is going to deal with. We can't just cut back on government services expecting charities and foundations to pick up the slack.

What Would Thoreau Have Made of the Current Debate?
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2009
Not all doctors are equally good physicians, and not all sick persons are equally good patients. If we persevere in our quixotic quest for a fetishized medical equality we will sacrifice personal freedom as its price. We will become the voluntary slaves of a "compassionate" government that will provide the same low quality health care to everyone. Henry David Thoreau famously remarked, "If I knew for a certainty that a man was coming to my house with the conscious design of doing me good, I should run for my life." Thoreau feared a single, unarmed man approaching him with such a passion in his heart. Too many people now embrace the coercive apparatus of the modern state professing the same design. Universal Health Care Isn't Worth Our Freedom Dr. Szasz is emeritus professor of psychiatry at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He is author of "The Myth of Mental Illness," among other books

Gas prices: The key to fuel economy
jatfla
by jatfla  5-19-2009    1
There will be a market for these smaller cars, but how many families can fit theirs into one? They are going to be super dangerous on our highways; ie. collisions and in the long run cost people more. This is nothing but pure blackmail. All the while, those in power will continue to sport about in whatever, usually at taxpayers expense, and the really, really good plan for energy independence is going down the drain. Control us by increasing the price of gasoline so that we can't afford the vehicles we want, are appropriate for our households, offer a reasonable amount of physical security, etc... There is not enough space to say everything about why I hate this. We have become serfs to this Administration.
