homemade mixes: spiced evaporated milk for masala chai
Lexica
by Lexica  11-11-2008
If you keep a can of spice-infused evaporated* milk in the refrigerator, they say, it'll be ready whenever the craving for chai arises. Sounds worth trying. *I assume this is what the recipe means by "unsweetened condensed milk", as I've never seen "unsweetened condensed milk" on the shelf of any of the groceries I shop at (including the Indian and East & South Asian shops). I'm not sure why they call for unsweetened, though, since masala chai is ordinarily heavily sweetened. One guidebook I read said "just look away while the chai-wallah stirs the sugar into your chai — you don't want to know how much he's using. Really, you don't." :-D

recipe: spicy lime & cilantro soup
Lexica
by Lexica  10-18-2008    1
I'm currently trying (with only partial success) to fight off the Death Cold-Flu-Just-Kill-Me-Now thing that's going around our area. Tired, achy, low energy, not very hungry, and not able to stand up for too terribly long without getting dizzy -- so what to eat? This soup is just the ticket. Quick, easy, and mostly pantry-based (except for the lime juice and cilantro), its tart spiciness is exactly what I need when I'm sick and there's nobody around to go get takeout hot & sour soup. ;-)

Not My Financial Crisis -- I've Got Literally Nothing to Lose
Spiritualmonkey

CONTUNED: "I haven't heard much from or about people like me in the last month. Watching the media report on the crisis, you'd think the United States had achieved the Republican dream of becoming a full-fledged "ownership society" populated by an upwardly mobile class of home-owning day traders sitting on fat nest eggs. But it hasn't. So here's a news flash from the young-and-indebted demographic: Those of us without retirement plans or health insurance, who just barely make rent and buy food in the real economy, a lot of us aren't as scared as maybe we should be. We have our own gut take on the disappearance of $9 trillion in electronic NYSE casino chips. And that is, we could give a shit. ... "Scraping by will likely become even harder in the days ahead for people in my income bracket. But it seems to me that a decade of scraping by is good practice for whatever's coming. And it's just a fact that this particular era of capitalism hasn't been very good for those of us a

Best foods for your heart
willhelm
by willhelm  10-11-2008    1
Spinach can help keep your ticker in top shape thanks to its stores of lutein, folate, potassium, and fiber. Full of fiber and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, a little sprinkling of flaxseed can go a long way for your heart. Top a bowl of oatmeal or whole-grain cereal with a smidgen of ground flaxseed for the ultimate heart-healthy breakfast. Soy Soy may lower cholesterol, and since it is low in saturated fat, it's still a great source of lean protein in a heart-healthy diet.
