Is Mischief the world's oldest cat?
CrazyRedHead
by CrazyRedHead  12-3-2008    2
..."He sleeps for at least 16 hours a day and no longer ventures outside of the family's home in St Austell, Cornwall. Mrs Thorne, a housekeeper, said Mischief was still a 'huge part' of their family and is adored by their 20-month-old daughter, Skye. Her husband Chris, 51, has owned Mischief since he was 24. "

Grandmas help girls live longer, but not boys
trafficsmo
by trafficsmo  11-5-2009
According to the research from Cambridge University, the survival rate of a granddaughter living in the same house as her paternal grandmother is higher than if she were just living with her immediate family, reports The Independent. To reach the conclusion, Molly Fox of Cambridge University and her colleagues analyzed the birth and death records of seven populations in Asia, North America, Europe and Africa

We as a culture have gone completely insane on the issue of obesity. See my recent clips about how research shows obesity has NO EFFECT on longevity. What does? Being fit and active . It doesn't matter if you're shaped like an apple, a pear, or a string bean - get yourself moving!

Wouldn't it be nice to know the formula for maximum health and longevity? Perhaps you are expecting the same old sermon: eat right, exercise, and maybe have a glass of red wine on occasion, and that is all one can do for maximum health. Many of us just do

Hey America, WARS ARE STILL GOING ON!
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  9-16-2009
A comment on a clip stated: “preventable deaths…how about Heart, lung disease, cancer, etc.?” Not sure what the clipper was getting at, citing these ills; calling them preventable? Anyway, it occurred to me… what about WAR; shouldn't that be at the top of this woeful list? The Bush admin, wanted WAR so badly, they started TWO! Of course, they could, 9/11, HAPPENED! (I’m still not convinced the attack occurred without a WINK & NOD.) Now 8 yrs later and still young people die because of that infamous day. We can’t blame Bush any longer, so who should bear the brunt of accountability for the bloodletting? Obama won the election, partly due to his stance against war and now he’s ratcheting up troop levels assuring its longevity? If he continues to act like Bush when it comes to WAR; He has not only misled us, he FUCKED us royally! And although I’m charmed by his eloquence, it can’t last… We, who despise war, won’t look the other way while he sends so many to die…& OVER WHAT?

115-Year-Old Woman Dies Waiting for Health Care Reform
foxyarse

Nevertheless, she was delighted by the letter, and had planned to vote for Obama in 2012. Blaine, whose grandparents were slaves, said when she was a child, her health care provider was also the stable veterinarian. She indicated that, for some people, things really haven't gotten all that much better.

Real-Life Fountain of Youth is Only a Matter of Time
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  9-1-2009
I have actually been considering this question for a while. I have no doubt that we will work out how to naturally extend our lives "qualitatively rather than quantitatively". So I realize there has to be other changes in the way we approach life and death that need to change. Tis, for me certainly a fascinating wondering and exploration. "...the question is not when, but how it will be done and (most importantly) whether incredible longevity medicines and technologies will have a net benefit to the world or create more problems than they are worth." webecoist

Tests begin on drugs that may slow aging
Aribeth
by Aribeth  8-18-2009
With theorists’ and their gloomy predictions cast in the shade, at least for the time being, experimental biologists are pushing confidently into the tangle of linkages that evolution has woven among food intake, fertility and life span. “My rule of thumb is to ignore the evolutionary biologists — they’re constantly telling you what you can’t think,” Gary Ruvkun of the Massachusetts General Hospital remarked this June after making an unusual discovery about longevity. An important difference among experts on aging is whether there is an intrinsic rate of aging. Supposing there were cures for all diseases, what would one die of, if one died at all? <<

Performance matters. And Judge Sotomayor's performance provides no reason for putting her on the Supreme Court. Although the case of the Connecticut firefighters is the latest and best-known of Judge Sotomayor's reversals by the Supreme Court, an even more revealing case was Didden v. Village of Port Chester, where the Supreme Court openly rebuked the unanimous three-judge panel that included Judge Sotomayor for "an evident denial of the most elementary forms of procedural due process." Too much that Sonia Sotomayor has said and done over the years places her squarely in the camp of those supporting a racial spoils system instead of equal treatment for all. The organizations she has belonged to, as well as the statements she has made repeatedly -- not just an isolated slip of the tongue taken "out of context"-- as well as her dismissing the white firefighters' case that the Supreme Court heard and heeded, all point in the same direction.
