Who is a Jew? And who gets to decide?
aklimento
by aklimento  11-11-2009    1
First of all it must be the sign of bad taste to simply underscore somebody's religion, ethnicity, race, political believes, color of eyes or skin or hair, sexual preferences or affiliations with any social group. Hence make the life determining decisions on it. Any person is innocent unless convicted by Court of Law. And in any case deserve respectful approach. One can imagine how stressful and damaging this situation can be for teenager... :(

The Hole at the Heart of Our Strategy ~ Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009    1
...to the “noble” “heroism” of suicide bombers and, indeed, objectively supporting the other side in an active war is to be regarded as just some kind of alternative lifestyle that adds to the general vibrancy of the base. Since 9/11, we have, as the Twitterers recommend, judged people by their actions " flying planes into skyscrapers, blowing themselves up in Bali nightclubs or London Tube trains, planting IEDs by the roadside in Baghdad or Tikrit. And on the whole we’re effective at responding with action of our own " taking out training camps in Afghanistan, rolling up insurgency networks in Fallujah and Ramadi, intercepting terror plots in London and Toronto and Dearborn. But we’re scrupulously non-judgmental about the ideology that drives a man to fly into a building or self-detonate on the subway, and thus we have a hole at the heart of our strategy. We use rhetorical conveniences like “radical Islam” or, if that seems a wee bit Islamophobic .......

If you cannot speak Texan, gee outta town!
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  11-9-2009
Texas is not the only place with people in power embarrassing the town but this is pretty good - fining people for something that's not a crime. It says as much about those who trained and managed them and the courts in their jurisdictions as it does about the officers with misplaced sense of being word police. Question is what would happen if one of these officers got stopped in London - England, not Ohio; could they be cited for refusing to speak the Queen's English?

Finishing fourth in the men's category was another American, Ryan Hall. Hall, 27, is a rising star on the world running circuit and made headlines last year by running the London marathon in a stunning 2:06:17. Americans once dominated long-distance running, bringing home consecutive gold medals from 1970-82. Marathon legend Bill Rodgers won the New York City four years in a row from 1976 to 1979, and Alberto Salazar took walked away with successive victories from 1980-82. The marathon, which began in 1970 with a mere 127 runners, now hosts 38,000 athletes from around the globe, according to the marathon's Web site. Known for its diverse, punishing terrain, the annual event spans all five of New York's City's boroughs, finishing in the heart of Central Park. Keflezighi and Tulu will each receive $130,000 in prize money.

Food Critic Murders Baboon: Needed Fodder for His Column?!
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-29-2009    3
While admitting there was no good excuse for his action, he nonetheless tries to explain: "I noticed that, when it was alive, I thought about the baboon as a thing. Now he’s dead, I’m posthumously anthropomorphising him, and that was one of the reasons I killed. I wanted to get a sense of what it might be like to kill someone, a stranger." Stop. Breathe. I note my first reaction: Excruciating execution for this guy, preferably slowly bleeding to death in front of his buddies, sounds like a good idea. Exhale. Pause. Next reaction: What the heck was he thinking? What sick person would find it perfectly acceptable to write about his urge to explore killing primates in a food column? Is he so disengaged from life and his place in it that he thinks this is witty? Educational? Cool?

So far I have been to Aruba, Hawaii, London, New York, Italy, Rio de Janeiro, Greece, a zoo, a few nature trails, and Iceland all in one day! Whew! I should be tired, lol. Really cool viewing of Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square here, although it is dark there now, so check back tomorrow at an earlier time, it's nearly 10 p.m. atm. Use the 3 different camera views under the feed to choose which place you want to see.

Mother of 'honour killing' girl turns on husband in courtroom confrontation
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-21-2009
Mrs Goren, speaking through a Turkish interpreter, also told the jury: 'After Tulay went missing, he attempted to beat me up a few times.' She said she repeatedly confronted her husband about her daughter's disappearance, increasingly so since her younger daughter was killed in a car crash in 2006. 'I was saying it to his face openly, frankly. I was saying to him, "You swallowed Tulay". I was saying, "She is alive, in your tummy". I kept saying it,' Mrs Goren told the court. 'During the last few years I started saying it more. Since I lost Hatice I started saying it even more.' Mehmet, 49, of Woodford Green, north east London, together with Cuma Goren, 42, of Walthamstow, east London, and Ali Goren, 56, also of Walthamstow, deny murdering her on January 7 1999. They also deny conspiracy to murder her boyfriend Halil Unal between May 1998 and February 1999.
