Living in Sin City’s Underground Tunnels
valann 47
by valann 47  1-6-2010
O’Brian has been exploring the tunnels for over five years and wrote a book about the people who live there, Beneath The Neon, published in 2007. He has worked to get people housed, recently founded the Shine A Light foundation to offer various forms of aid, and guides social workers through the tunnels to offer services to the people like health and drug counselling. All the same, O’Brian is wary of letting the inhabitants get too comfortable and entrenched in the tunnels and so doesn’t like to give out too much in the way of food, water, clothes and blankets. Storm drains are dangerous places to be: during flash floods, water can travel as fast and 30 mph through the tunnels with levels rising as much as one foot per minute. Then no one wants to be down there.

The PTSD Nation - America the Traumatized
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-31-2009
This breaking of the national psyche was bound to happen; it's been decades in the making. American exceptionalism -- the idea that we are somehow better and more blessed than any other people on the face of the earth -- was bound to fail as our nation, like every other before it, found itself caught in the grinding wheels of history. The 2000 election, 9/11, Enron and WorldCom, Afghanistan, Iraq on a lie, Abu Ghraib, the USA Patriot Act, Guantánamo, Katrina and near economic collapse: each of these -- and many, many others -- challenged our sense of national identity, giving the lie to who we thought we were, and compromising a sense of safety, however delusional, that we once enjoyed. No longer were Americans exempt from the perils that face other nations. sneaked up behind us and whacked us in the head.

Tunguska's piece of comet that detonated over Siberia in the early 1900's was estimated to be only One hundred feet across. How is a spacecraft going to move this rock with an impact--sustained ion-pulse rocket engines?? They'll just make it hit earth on 2029....I had hoped to live longer than this..

Yes, I Am My Brother's Keeper.
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-25-2009    7
Keep your eye in the almighty dollar and your fellow man. Get the dollar and keep him down. Make him produce for you. You are not your brother's keeper. Suppose he is poor! Suppose his wife is forced into prostitution! Suppose his child is deformed! And suppose he shuffles off by destroying himself! What is that to you? And if you succeed, that fixes you as a businessman. You have all the necessary qualifications. Don't let your conscience disturb you.--that would interfere with business. Competition was natural enough at one time, but do you think you are competing today? Against whom? Against Rockefeller? When we are in partnership and have stopped clutching each other's throats, when we have stopped enslaving each other,we will stand together, hands clasped, and be friends. we will be comrades, we will be brothers, and we will begin the march to the grandest civilization the human race has ever known. Excerpts from Eugene V. Debs' famous speech on May 23, 1908.

"And we shall call this 'Moff's Law'"
Lexica

More: …Finally, this should also go without saying, but since it apparently doesn’t: Believe me, the person who is annoying you so much by thinking about the art? They have already considered your revolutionary “just enjoy it” strategy, because it is not actually revolutionary at all. It is the default state for most of humanity. So when you go out of your way to suggest that people should be thinking less — that not using one’s capacity for reason is an admirable position to take, and one that should be actively advocated — you are not saying anything particularly intelligent. And unless you live on a parallel version of Earth where too many people are thinking too deeply and critically about the world around them and what’s going on in their own heads, you’re not helping anything; on the contrary, you’re acting as an advocate for entropy.

Live Stream of Copenhagen Climate Summit. 5:13am EST -- Obama meeting away from Summit in Hotel with 26 heads of state to "broker a deal". 5:15am EST -- Delegates debating text to include "Mother Earth". (This represents pantheism --i.e. global religion in the text). 5:56am EST -- PM of Denmark opens, talks about "Climate Threat" of "global warming"--while referring to the snow storm outside as "different reality". 6:00 am EST -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, "seize the time" now. 6:05 am EST -- Premier of People's Republic of China (Communist state)..."China was first country to adopt climate change formula." (i.e. copy us communists) (This post is NOT an endorsement of the Summit or the commentary, but only to "keep watch" in the public interest).

‘The Whole World Needs to Adopt China’s One-Child Policy’ Says Moonbat
merrie
by merrie  12-11-2009    5
In fact, many of Europe's current problems assimilating the massive influx of non-Europeans are the result of a declining population, which has caused a shortage in the labor force and strained the ability of the young to support the growing number of elderly. Even the birthrate of the author's own country, Canada, isn't high enough to sustain its population, and Japan's has begun to so deeply affect its economy that the country's thinking of paying its citizens to have more children - $3,400 per year per child. To more vividly argue against the notion of overpopulation, the Web site overpopulationisamyth.com explains through a mathematical equation that the entire world could quite easily live in Texas, leaving the rest of the Earth entirely vacant. Francis also conveniently didn't mention in her article that, according to the book "Introduction to Social Macrodynamics: Compact Macromodels of the World System Growth" (2006),

More: I hope you live without the need to dominate, and without the need to be dominated. I hope you are never victims, but I hope you have no power over other people. And when you fail, and are defeated, and in pain, and in the dark, then I hope you will remember that darkness is your country, where you live, where no wars are fought and no wars are won, but where the future is. Our roots are in the dark; the earth is our country. Why did we look up for blessing — instead of around, and down? What hope we have lies there. Not in the sky full of orbiting spy-eyes and weaponry, but in the earth we have looked down upon. Not from above, but from below. Not in the light that blinds, but in the dark that nourishes, where human beings grow human souls.

Expedition Great White
merrie
by merrie  11-16-2009    1
EXPEDITIONS: * By mounting long-lasting tracking tags and taking measurements and DNA samples from live, wild sharks in this expedition, scientists are hoping to unravel the mysteries of the great white’s lifecycle ― where they are born, how they mate, where they migrate, aggregate, and more ― to help conserve and protect these endangered animals. * Dr. Domeier has developed profiles on almost 100 great whites based on their gill slits, pelvic fins, tails and color patterns. * He designed the most advanced real-time tracking devices ever made ― lasting up to six years and capable of sending 120,000 messages. * A line that can hold 5,000 pounds along with four fixed buoys can together create hundreds of pounds of drag that eventually wear down sharks’ resistance, allowing crew members to hand-reel them in safely. * The shark is then lifted onto the platform with a unique forklift that can safely hold 37 tons.

From 1991 to 2001, about 815,000 acres of protected Petén rain forest were lost to unlawful settlers, drug traffickers and cattle ranchers. Since then, the rate of loss has accelerated, according to Edin Lopez, technical director of the government's National Council of Protected Areas in Petén. "We are not going to speak badly of cows," Chayax said. "But the ranchers have no heart."

Managing Distraction
Kelika
by Kelika  11-1-2009
more: "Surfing or multitasking may have even more of a place in 21st-century society as strategies of learning," says Jackson. "But going forward, we need to do much more than hopscotch across the web, split-focused and pulled this way and that by choice distractions. We cannot mistake fragmented, diffused attention as avenues of higher thought-or deeper relationships." "Instead, we need to do better at cultivating deep focus, keen awareness and meta-cognitive "executive" attention-the package of skills that is crucial to moving forward in a complex, high-tech age," says Jackson. "If we can 'green' the earth, we can clean up our noisy, interrupt-driven environment, and set the stage for a renaissance of attention for all."

Daily Devotion: A Time For Life And Death
edwinjosephvg
by edwinjosephvg  10-23-2009
This is a christian daily devotion article. As I was reading the Book of Ecclesiastes, it says that we will all be facing death. No riches and wisdom can extend our life because we areo nly born to live at a certain specific period of time. The question here is, “Are you ready to face death?” Where will you be headed after death?
