The typewriter symbolized the golden age of writing
einbar
by einbar  Today 7:23 AM
"The golden age of the typewriter has passed, but its memory lives on. That memory exists in the great literature it helped produce, in everyday parlance such as “Carbon Copy” (CC) and “Carriage Return" (CR), as a storyline in detective fiction and films, but most of all it lives on in the “QWERTY” keyboard design, its great legacy to the technology that consigned the typewriter to history."

'It's the culture, stupid!'
Efrain Alvarado
by Efrain Alvarado  10-7-2008
Europe “All that has made European culture and civilization great – the Europe of the thousand cathedrals, the Europe of the custodians of the artistic treasures, of literature and Christian music, the Europe that expressed real solidarity and service to the poor through the emphatic force of Christian charity – found their origins in the Bible,” Oceania Putney, 62, noted the striking cultural contracts in his region, from the highly Western and secular ambience of urban Australia and New Zealand to the staggering variety of indigenous tribal groups in more rural areas and across the islands of Oceania. In Papua New Guinea alone, he noted, there are 847 distinct languages, and overall there are as many as 1,200 different tongues in Oceania.

Alchoholic Anonymous
jimmy123
by jimmy123  10-7-2008
When Bill Wilson (with the help of Sam Shoemaker) finished what would become the central book for Alcoholics Anonymous in 1938, he never imagined it would have the impact it still has in addiction recovery. Known as "The Big Book," it is in it's fourth edition and is widely circulated through out the world. The Big Book holds within it the central thesis and ideas of Alcohol Anonymous and the 12 Step approach. It begins with the story of Bill W., anonymously written as is the approach with the 12 Steps in all areas. Most addicts feel that The Big Book is a powerful component to their recovery process and treat it as a sort of "Bible" for addiction recovery. Perhaps some of the more important features of the newer editions are the appendixes, which hold valuable information and points of clarity on the role of spirituality and addiction recovery.

Wow, what a slap in the face. Responses range from accusing Horace Engdahl, the permanent secretary of the Nobel prize jury, of not reading enough American literature to just trying to generate publicity. The last American to win a prize for literature was Toni Morrison in 1993.

Pullman on Religion
tabsey
by tabsey  9-30-2008    1
INTRO; Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy constitutes one of the finest reading experiences for children I’ve ever seen. I read them as an adult, on the advice of a literary colleague, and fell under their spell immediately. They are fantasy books, for sure, but with a strong rational and anti-authority philosophy. And although I don’t think of them as purely anti-religious, if your religion is one with an authoritarian streak then … Interesting character.

Andropause
topsexualhealth
by topsexualhealth  9-25-2008
As you enter your thirties, most men begin to experience signs of andropause. Like Menopause in women, Andropause begins to alter your body’s production of hormones, most noticeably Testosterone. These changes happen over time and gradually affect physical performance, fatigue and energy levels, moods, sex drive, and even thinning hair. Provacyl™ works by helping your body increase hormone production and balancing the testosterone to estrogen ratios, as well as helping the body convert testosterone to DHT.

"To create visions of the future people can believe in"
balthazarus

The most interesting part is: "The best science fiction, as with all great art, doesn't just reflect the world but seeks to influence it." For that one needs a clear description of what should be. A sight that can take the present closer to the desired future.

Will this add to or detract from Montgomery's legacy? Butler sees it as an important addition. She writes, "the legacy of L.M. Montgomery, and my grandfather, Rev. Ewan Macdonald, and its related responsibilities and joys, are taken very seriously by my family. I spoke with them before writing this essay and we agreed that it was important for us to share our family's story."

Another Variety of Insanity
AtlLiberal

What defines "respectable" religion from a cult. I suspect it's either number of followers or going against the favorite wedge issue of the day. In reality, the differences are very small and often hinge on the number of angels on a pin. From the article: "At their Saugus, Calif., church in the 1970s, the Alamos preached that anyone who quit the cult would be killed, driven mad, or changed into a homosexual."

But She Attends a Church Where They Speak in Tongues
sahara

She vowed to go all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. “Without question, litigation challenging the Secretary's decision will be of immense significance to Alaska and the nation,” she said. “I would not be at all surprised if the case is ultimately decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. As governor, I believe that my responsibility requires full State participation beginning at the trial court and ending with the last appeal.” On Fox News, in an interview with Neil Cavuto she explained her reasoning. “We don`t believe that this speculation, again unprecedented, on computer modeling could forecast the effects of climate change, to the degree that leaves us in a comfortable position,” she said. “It’s just too far out into the future, this speculative modeling.”
