Flowchart: Medieval sexual decision making for penitentials
haraya
by haraya  8-22-2007    3
In his book "Law, Sex, and Christian Society in Medieval Europe," James Brundage creates a truly fantastic flow chart explaining when one can and (mostly) cannot engage in the physical act of love. At the time, a lot of Christian theology basically took the form of lists of things one wasn't allowed to do, so this flow chart probably isn't far off from the real decision making process prescribed by the church.

Our acupuncturist pronounces it "Zen Goo Shway". Similar to Ben-gay and other topical liniments, Team LexiMonkey always keeps a couple of bottles of this stuff on hand. our local Vietnamese grocery carries it, Excellent for aches and pains and bruises. There are stories of fighters breaking an arm, soaking the arm in ZGS, taping it up, and going on to win the match. Our acupuncturist discounts the literal interpretation of that story, but this is really great stuff.

The Importance of Having Friends Who Disagree
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-3-2009    6
Many people make the mistake of surrounding themselves with people who think exactly like them and reinforce every idea or prejudice they have. This is a bad mistake and will often end up distorting the reality you see. One may end up with a "fan club" that just reinforces your prejudices. So do a quick test right now. Make a list of your closest friends/acquintances/advisors. Then make a separate list of those who think totally differently from you, but are worth listening to anyway. Look at the intersection of these lists. You may be surprised.

Where in the World is Global Warming a Priority?
billpar
by billpar  10-26-2009
Sure, there would be a huge transfer of wealth from the developed nations to developing nations, but that’s not what Torethy Frank wants. She says, “There is too much corruption in the government and it goes in people’s pockets. Give the money directly to the people for businesses so we can support ourselves without having to rely on the government.” As David Kreutzer mentions in his Politico chat wrap, there much faster and much less expensive ways to adapt to climate change than trying to change the temperature by capping greenhouse gas emissions. Mosquito nets and attacking breeding grounds of mosquitoes and building levees to protect against potentially rising sea levels are all much cheaper but dramatically more effective than signing on to something that would prohibit these countries to develop.

"Black Plants" lists 75 choices for a gothy garden
Lexica

More: Bonine says that for maximum effect, black plants require contrast in the garden. "Gold-leaf plants work really well - or a backdrop like a light stone wall. They're especially good in containers mixed with other textures and colors." While some of the plants may be available at your local nursery, Bonine suggests seeking out a specialty nursery for the more obscure varieties.

Mass-Murderer Mao: WH Communication Directors's Favorite Politician

the people can say how you can do this? Mao said, 'You fight your war, I'll fight mine'... you don't have to accept the definition of how to do things... you fight your own war. So Anita Dunn, White House Communications Director, has a favorite politician: the Hitler of China, Mao Tse-Tung. The man who slaughtered 70 million innocents. But Fox News is the "enemy". Un-f***ing-believable. Hat tip: Brutally Honest. Others on the case: Michelle Malkin, Ace o' Spades, Hot Air Pundit.

Media Ignoring Conservatives' Return to Dominance of Political Book Market
merrie
by merrie  10-15-2009    1
In September of that year, the Boston Globe proclaimed liberals "triumphant" against "conservatives' decade long hold on popular culture." Yes, it seemed such wonderful liberal values were finally en vogue. Barnes and Noble, reacting to the outpouring of Bush-bashing literature in August of 2003 announced that it would set up ‘political science/cultural affairs' tables at its stores to feature the newest partisan works. But conservatives have reclaimed their hold on the Times's bestseller page. The closest any of the top 15 hard-cover non-fiction books gets to a defense of liberalism or the Obama Administration is In Fed We Trust by David Wessel "The books from the left strike me as an obvious reaction to Bush," conservative commentator Tucker Carlson told the Associated Press in 2003. "And for people who buy them, it's a way of voting against him in an off-election year." With Bush gone, liberals no longer have a blatant target at whom to direct a coordinated

Twitter Talks Data With Microsoft, Google — All Things Digital
merrie
by merrie  10-8-2009    2
All this without tarnishing the noisy service as a shill, because it lets you listen to only what you want. The deals would be nonexclusive and may not happen, All Things Digital reports " which only feeds the casual cred Twitter has been cultivating, taking its time about coming up with a business model that produces operating revenue, while it rakes in VC money at a level that values the three-year-old private company at about $1 billion. The “Let them do it” philosophy works like a charm for Twitter, whose content comes from the general public and whose best interfaces come from third-party developers making full use of the company’s freely available API. Along with the recently announced “lists” initiative, Twitter seems to be carefully setting the table so that partners can leverage its data " and the way it is organized " to enter new markets, while it sits back and maintains a server farm.
